my bad - I said Disney and then followed up with Sinbad (a Dreamworks film). I actually think Disney's rival feature at the time - Treasure Planet - did very well with their 3d integration.

I started animating because I thought 3D would make the process easier. But it's so hard to get things exactly the way you wanna that I ended up just using it as reference also. I love animating 2D over a moving 3D background, it really gives amazing results. Also, it really helps you learn perspective.
Yup had the same issue but am still trying to keep at it. My brain fails whenever I have to do complex stuff though
@@shadowmahesh9876 I decided to focus on 2D first, but I plan to get back to it eventually
I like how you used it in the end as more of a reference point. I agree as someone who combines 2d and 3d. 3d is wonderful but it can look a little too processed or procedural. I love how Olof Storm combines frame by frame and 3d. He makes it look organic.
Surfers are looking great by the way and I appreciate your honesty and insights.
I feel like that most people say that using 3D is like cheating which is really sad because 3D has to be one of the most useful tools that a 2D animator has. (References, custom poses, etc...)
I think that people think this way because of CG animes which got it a bad reputation, and ngl they're right but there are lots of hidden gems that are amazing (Land of Lustrous, Trigun Stampede, Dorohedoro, Beastars...)
Yes
Only amateurs say like that... You are totally correct... I am a 2d animator too
Cheating was supposed to be easy. 3D is a lot of work😅

Agreed, I love movies like brave and tangled but the goddamn remakes are just peak boredom
The 3D Peanuts remake is great too!
@@artgumbop oh yea that one is good. But not the kind of remake we were talking bout

Arcane is such a jawdropping blend of 2D and 3D. Seems like some studios just use 3D elements to save money on animation and that's where a lot of it's bad reputation comes from... but when you take the extra time and make ART, it's no less beautiful or expressive than 2D ;)
That's my 2 cents, but taste is subjective.
its best to get to know the fudamentals of the 3d process because not only does it allow you to quickly prototype an area during the planning and preproduction (sometimes referred to as greyboxing) but, as you found out, it allows for simple and creative solutions that bring cohesion and fluidity to an otherwise chaotic shot. Dont limit your own possibilities. Even if you dont use a prticular tool everyday its still nice to have it in the toolbox when needed.
For sure
Grey boxing is a new term to me, but I remember doing something by that definition in my previous films to just get quick ideas for compositions by making a boxy version of the space in 3d. It is really helpful
@@HowardWimshurst with that said, I hate 3d because how the comapnies can't agree on the orientations, object scaling or a universal vocabulary for elements inside their packages.
Love how that low poly head turned out! Didn't know you learned 3D at Uni, nice! :D
Even if you don't end up using anything, it can still be very useful reference and in case of achieving character consistency, it can help you "internalize" your own design by breaking it down in 3D like that.
I started 3d animation in 2014, and last year started weaning myself off, and doing 2d. I always drew, and did cartooning, even in a few papers. But last year I got really fed up feeling like the constant battle with software. When it's you and paper, or digital paper, YOU are the tool, the software and YOU can train to draw whatever you want, no fighting with anything but yourself, perhaps. I am soooo relieved to not fight with software. bloomin' 'eck! Before I discovered the ISKN repaper tablet I was fighting my wacom tablet, too slick for me, and said bugger it, I'll do it on paper. anyway, I digress. Nice video. I still love 3d. Just glad I'm having a break from doing much with it.
I guess I didn’t see how ToonBoom is a blessing for me; there are compositions I can build in it that are just not possible in other softwares.
In anime, the use 3d mainly for background animation.. attack on Titans etc the camera movement is very hard to make in 2d animation..
Your videos are always very informative and equally inspiring. I’ve recently been shifting more and more energy in digital art and animation. All the best to you Howard 💯✌🏼❤️
I'm really looking forward to Emersion, the updates look amazing so far. I like how your animation of the wave here has your signature swirls 😁
Glad you like what you see so far Anna!
i coinsidentily just did that in my current project for the first time lol
Nice way of working! Good job!
I think though it will become more used unless someone releases a way for texturing for 2d characters. When you see something like Berserk - that is very complicated clothing, armour and texturing which is insanely difficult for animating 2d, large crowds are harder in 2d too as well as complicated clothing; so I see a lot of usage of 3d for complicated clothing and armour as well as more complicated camera movement and sequences
really enjoy your videos btw
Love seeing your process, it makes mine look basic but I wish to also be able to make stuff look dynamic like that and just really fucking dope in general haha
Cheers abe 😂
Damn! This film is looking beautiful already Howard. ❤
I was today's years old when I learned that waves are just LINES ON A ROLLING BARREL 😫😭🤯. Excuse while I freak for a moment... this film is gonna be good.
I started in 2d design and some animations here and there then later on got into 3d.
But now in my animations I'd love to mix 2d with 3d (probably using Grease Pencil in Blender) - so will try and do that soon.
I'm entering your competition so will hopefully have some of that in my animation that I submit. :)
Like using 3d for some complicated angles that are harder to visualise flatly without 3d anchoring. It saves messing about with perspective lines. It also helps in 3d picture of a character and prefer using 3d for textures and advanced clothing which is harder and more time consuming in 2d.
Its the singer not the song...meaning its just a tool and its all down to the artist, just as some 2D can be bad in the wrong hands, 3D/CG can be amazing with the right person/studio!
That's a great choice sir
I really enjoyed this video
for study purposes, I think you can work seamlessy with blender's grease pencil
Oh no... I'm next... (I for one can't wait until I can make both 2D and 3D art at once!)
The 3d problem now and has been for a while is more with weight and having characters interact with each other physically due to 3d characters just clip through. In 2d it easier doing touching characters because 3d characters dont know 3d characters. You can get more flexible liberty with 2d then 3d VFX though because it more designed 3d for simulation of realism whilst 2d is more about artistic expression
Awesomeness
am a Nigerian, your videos are very educative,
Amazing
1:23 same here sir
I've always thought a similar technique would be good for making comics.
Sameeeee
Yeah I'm a senior animator, I specialise in 3d but I would disagree with your friend simulating the waves, it would be faster just to draw it to be honest, al least for me 😆. I have joined you contest as well can wait to see everyones work, I'll be using a combination of 3d and 2d for my animation, so this will be fun 😁👍
Hmm. Gets me thinking. Is 2d animation timeless? Some people consider Transformers the movie 1986 to be dated. Which I find interesting.
Bambi, Silly Symphonies, Snow White, Fantasia...
I rest my case
I like to use 3d to stage my rooms.
Sorry I'm a little off topic here but wanted to ask if the Animators Guild Starting In Animations courses has a payment plan situation or if it can be paid in instalments per month
sorry we don't have a payment plan anymore. Better to save up and pay it all in one go
question: does your course help learn animation on roughanimator ? its the app i use to practice on my tablet
My course helps you learn animation on any frame by frame software you use. The principles of animation / film making / drawing apply no matter what the app. That being said, I don't work in this software roughanimator, so you would need to learn howe that app works independently, and figure how my lessons (which I demonstrate in TVPaint) apply to your software.
so i really need an advice ... so i m currently in a engineering college learning animation side by side so i have like just 3 to 4 of that engineering to learn animation and start earning through commission works ... but the hard part for people like me is .. we dont know the right path like what things we should learn ... what we should really focus on cause learning in wrong way will take more years than expected ... so please give some tips ... i have been learning animation since 3 to 4 months so i know the 12 principles ... drawing skills are like between beginner and intermediate level so please advice somethings ..... some plans i have in my minds are like i should really focus on character animation like acting, emotions, head turn, walks jumps blah blah , character sketch and FOR BACKGROUND ANIMATION I SHOULD LEARN BLENDER GREASE PENCIL CAUSE I HAVE HEARD IT MAKES THE BACKGROUND ANIMATION A BIT EASY
First let me get something out the way: You're stuck balancing your time between two different universes (engineering and 2d animation) - and you're thinking of learning a THIRD UNIVERSE at the same time? (3d/2d animation with Blender). I'm sorry but Blender is something nerds are excited about and so they start recommending it to absolutely everyone including 2d animation students who are already facing an overload of stuff to learn.
Be critical of the people recommending you grease pencil. Where are their results? How long did it take them to learn? How fast is their learning progress? How much experience did they already have when they started grease pencil? How ambitious are the shots they are attempting? Are they just chickening out of learning 2d perspective so they are using blender 3d viewer as a crutch?
I know in my video I'm showing you how I "quickly hopped into blender" to consult something 3d, but you have to understand I have over 10 years experience in this field. With my film I'm attempting some extremely advanced visuals that are rarely ever seen. I'm not trying to get to grips with the animation process + learn engineering symultaneously.
Oh you heard Blender grease pencil makes the BG process a little easier? YOU HEARD IT WRONG.
FORGET about Blender grease pencil for... let's say... 3 years. Learn a pure 2d animation software like TVPaint / CSP EX / Toonboom first - that's already a lot to deal with - and then if you really want to revisit grease pencil 3 years later you can. but my dude you've gotta focus a little and not be distracted by these grease pencil nerds. You're overwhelmed enough as it is.
OK here we go - onto the main topic: THE RIGHT PATH
There are many paths - but I have constructed a path of learning for you and people like you which imo is pretty dang solid. It covers a lot of bases - in an order of progressing difficulty. Not too many bases to overwhelm you. This is my first course which lays the foundations: www.animatorguild.com/getting-started.html
It has drawing lessons, as well as animation and film making lessons. The entire process for making short animations really. Based on what you have told me, you might be past the foundations.
Next course for intermediate to advanced is here:
www.animatorguild.com/mastering-motion.html
It has a schedule you can follow for full time or part time learning - which gives it a nice step by step structure. It's much less than what you would pay for a university degree course, but packs a lot of the same value you would get - or maybe more so.
@@HowardWimshurst i guess that makes sense cause lately I have been observing that i m making animation less as i m trying different things i guess I really should stop few things for now .... So the way i m learning currently is that i sketch and just sketch during the lectures in my college so that way i don't have to give extra time for learning drawing as well ... When i return from college i ll just give my time for animating that way i can actually give more hours in animating ... thx for the reply it helped me to realise where was i wrong i guess .✌️
@@HowardWimshurst my plans are really simple for now to just develope skills and before the last year will try to earn through freelance that way i won't have to get job in engineering . Cause my parents thinks animator earns really low and i aggree with them if u are thinkin about job they really earn less and thats the reason i m stuck with engineering . Will have to save money finally to get a course . Thx
This courses available in other country also ???
Yes, in most countries
Which software did you use for the modeling of the head
Blender
How long do you think it will take to complete this scene?
a loooong time
I'm going to animate the whole film without color, then do all the coloring at the end
So the scene will be completed... months from now..
3d for background
2d for Characters 😁
Hey Howard loved your video! Would love to see your reaction to the Corridor AI animation and maybe get your thoughts on what you think of it 🤔 Hope you keep up the good work let's stay on that grind fellow Animators! 💪
I'm not gonna make a video on it, but I think their "animation" is a disgusting mess for which they are giving themselves way too much credit. I thought they would be more educated on the history of 2d animation by now to know that Ralph Bakshi already shot live action films and rotoscoped over them back in the 70s.
Plus the artists of Vampire Hunter D aren't getting paid a penny for the film, nor were they asked for any kind of permission. I've followed Corridor for many years and I'm disappointed in them. Why didn't they wait until a fair system was established before exploiting the animation industry? It's a stupid cash grab bloated by nonsense AI tech hype.

Sinbad isn’t Disney
yeah my bad, i cut at a bad point and it made it sound like that
Animators in the past made 3d sculptures of their animated characters out of clay to better animate them.
