Retro Rally Raid: The Story Of The First Dakar Classic

- For four decades and counting, the Dakar Rally has been host to the widest variety of vehicles in any form of motorsport in the world. From VW Bugs to Porsche 959s, the BMW GS to the KTM 450 Rally, Mercedes Gs to jacked-up Peugeot 405s, and every type of buggy, truck, and tube-framed prototype in between, the infamously difficult rally raid has been the target of many a manufacturer and competitor.
The modern version is still chock full of brave and talented nuts racing on bikes, trucks, cars, and buggies, but this year added even more variety, and marked a significant step in the rally’s history with the inclusion of the first-ever Classic category. The inaugural edition saw 24 teams take on the terrain of Saudi Arabia over a nearly two-week period of competition that ran in a parallel route to the main event that began and ended in Jeddah. Range Rovers, Unimogs, Land Cruisers, Mitsu Monteros, and more took on the desert in a live action display of Dakar history.
Petrolicious caught up with Ignacio “Livingstone” Corcuera and Juan Roura to get some insight into what it was like to compete in the Dakar Classic, and to understand what made this event important to them on an individual level. Livingstone was instrumental in creating the event, which was spurred by his desire to race the route in one of the earliest Dakar class winners, the Volkswagen Iltis, while Roura had grown up watching the Dakar from its inception in the late 1970s, and found that the Classic offered a more affordable and more sentimental point of entry to a race he’s always wanted to attempt.
“All my life, I’ve followed the Dakar closely on TV, at home … The Dakar Classic has opened up an opportunity because it’s more affordable. It has turned into the one option to experience the Dakar and race this rally that I’ve been so excited about. So, at 47 I’ve finally done it.”

Petrolicious! We need your videos! We miss you! Your channel was the best!
YES! When will you guys come back!!!???
Where are u guys?
The synthesized BGM reminds good old tastes of ‘80s-‘90s.
Agreed...Miami Vice vibe.
Ten years ago I was doing a long distance ferry flight for the company I worked for, moving a helicopter from west Africa over to central Asia. We once stopped for the night in a small town along the coast of the Western Sahara. Leaving the airport, we walked out into the coolest sight ever. A bunch of teams were there testing their vehicles for the upcoming rally. The whole town had been taken over haha. Dakar rally vehicles of every class and description all over the streets. The next morning when we departed we also saw tons more ripping around the sand dunes outside of town. It was awesome.
I love the fact that the video lasts 9:59
I came here just to comment that, but I see you already did it. I accept my defeat, congratulations. 😁
Exactly ,,also the title photo showing the Porsche in question .All click bait , because the major disappoinment of no feature whatsoever of the car.Literally a couple of seconds of the same shot in the title.
They've shortened the video to 9:58???!!! I came here again because someone commented that (although I can't find that comment).
Really bummed by what this channel has become. I miss the regular, high quality vids
Had to double check whether I was still subscribed or not! A video came up in my recommended feed and I realized I hadn’t seen a video in my sub box for a long while
Definitely looking on adding to my collection.
Hello anybody out there?
Agreed I love this channel, unfortunately I think if you look at the views the videos get sadly it's not enough. The production quality of these videos is insane and the views definitely don't reflect the quality of the content. It's sad because I love this channel 😭
@@hydrodynamica9233 Think the guy running Plicious stepped down due to some comments he made about blm
Excellent idea! Kind of “Gentleman Driver” for Dakkar Classic. For rally inexperienced people but with passion for original cars and road racing this should be a wonderful experience. Congrats!
What happend? last vid was 1 year ago 😭
Yes. This is it. Branching out the channel while keeping it about classic vehicles and the story of their owners. In 10 minutes you've managed to make me want to see a spotlight episode about each and every team of the Dakar Classic.
sad to see the channel died truly a classic
No doubt that many of those classics are hiding in a warehouse somewhere. No better excuse to "dust them off". 😁😁👍🏻
7 months without videos on this channel is a crime.
I remember watching the Paris-Dakar in the 90s on Eurosport as a kid. The Pajero/Montero left an impression on me. Many years later (2013) I bought my 1996 Montero SR which lead to a few more. I still daily drive my 2005 Montero Limited :) Great video!
Excellent idea! Kind of “Gentleman Driver” for Dakkar. Loved the “Dakkar Classic” concept. Never done one, but enjoy original cars and road racing. Congrats!
Finally Classic....Finally a video at the highness of PETROLICIOUS's brand! Hope to see thousand and thousand of other great video!
This is phenomenal and sort of back to the old school petrolicious. Regardless, this idea is great. I started watching in this era. Fantastic.
.....what happening PETROLICIOUS? No more video? it's stopped again? :(
What's up with Petrolicious? Was this their last video four months ago?
Dakar is such an insane race! As someone who always wanted to know more about it, this video was awesome! Thank you from Japan!
Easily one of the Greatest races of all time
Beautiful, I can't wait to see what vehicles enter next year. Seeing these older vehicles out in the desert again is the coolest!
They say that this year, the restoration project on the double-cabbed Dakar truck of the 80s known as the DAF 3300 4x4 "Tweekoppige Monster" has finally finished, and that they are planning to participate in the 2022 Dakar Classic with it.
Simply amazing too have a classic class. Seeing the historical cars back in the sand is truly special.
Beautiful. Love seeing the variety of vehicles competing in this class ❤️
Una magnífica iniciativa que hace, por fin, interesante al Dakar. Pues la categoría de prototipos es un puro aburrimiento y no son coches “reales”.
Magnifico vídeo!!!
Where you at!
From France with passion and respect ✌🏼⚜️🇨🇵😎
I really like your style of videography, showcasing the people behind the cars as well as the cars themselves. Making it more personally relatable .
Happy to see a new vid instead of rehashed old content, keep it coming.
Brave souls to continue doing this in North Africa, more power to them! I would be amazed to see a 959 show up next time.
It was in Saudi Arabia this year
I can't believe it's over 😥
Petrolicious has since been sold twice. Long gone is the origin company. Probably never will be back.
I used to really like the Petrolicious channel, when it had the truth-speaking founder, who dared make the Orwellian mistake of calling a spade a spade.
Wonderful slice of history
Awesome! Although it's not quite clear who made this classic category possible d:
What happened to this channel? It used to pump out great content covering owner driven cars. With so many subscribers be nice to get an update of some sort
The founder was critical of BLM in 2020 and sold Petrolicious after being harassed over it. I imagine once they ran through whatever was already planned / in production the new owners haven't really done anything with it.
@@jetplume the main website still pumps out article's but they're dogshit now........ Even a RWB article slipped in.... So much for #drivetastefully
@@jetplume do you have some source on that?
@@brinkipinki Just type "Petrolicious BLM"
@@Digitalstar3 damn. Well, "critical" is quite the understatement, lol
This gets my adventure glands salivating... I'd love to do this, even just as a navigator/passenger...
I take it this channel is over?
Yeah it's over
Nice to see the old cars doing the Dakar rally, I'm surprised to see the baja Bug
SIEMPRE PETROLICIOUS CON EXCELENTE CALIDAD EN LOS CONTENIDOS......SERIOS......SIN PAYASADAS......GRACIAS.......
Livingstone, eres un grande 👏👏👏👏
Superb
Amazing.. this is the best class of Dakar in my opinion! Love IT!
I think this class is going to get bigger and bigger each year.
It's what Dakar is all about, keep it save and enjoy the sand👍🥰
Why no new videos?
this kind of content I've been waiting for 😍
This looks so fun
Nice video, very good content for education of future generations, most of people nowadays has limited knowledge about history of motorsports and development of automotive sector in general. Dakar has made good decision to include classic category, it brings back emotions and more diverse vibe!
What a shame to witness the death of a great channel
Gah, it'd be a dream to sling sand and dirt in a classic Dakar racer. Not supposed to be envious in life, but I'm an honest man and I'm pretty green with it right now!
Dead Channel ?
No lo he terminado de ver y ya le di le gusta 👍🏽
I wonder if they plan on expanding the field to include bikes.
I think you would see massive numbers of entrants if they did.
They did a similar thing in the Australasian Safari with bikes being no newer than a certain year of manufacture.
It would be unreal to see a bunch of pre 2000 Dakar bikes running that same route as in the video.
Amazing!!!!!I have no words!!!
This is great. I have always thought they needed a retro class since i was a kid and used to watch them on tv. The modern stuff is boring and unrelatable to me for some reason. Beautiful coverage as always!
Wanna know why OLD is GOLD?
Because back then there were so many different shapes and sizes, unlike today in all racing formats, it's copy and paste, everything is the same and looks the same making it incredible boring, only die-hard fans actually will stick around to follow it.
This is instantly better, IMO of course. But that is because I love the differences in cars/vehicles used.
Love the fact this video is 9:59 long nice attention to detail. This is so much better than that electric off road series that claims it's saving the planet. Classic Range Rover for me please!
This is a brilliant idea. It could open the door to someone entering Speed Dakar. It is kinda similar to what Alex Alexander did here in South Africa with the Amageza Rally. It allowed about 4 riders to take on more professional motorcycle rally riding and take part in the Dakar. Sadly with Alex's death a few years ago, the Amegaza died with him.
Someone plz explain, what happen to this channel?
Mofo got canceled 🗣
Amazing experience, I'd love to do it!
Nice lah video ni
80s were the best decade for cars and races, i thought 60s and 70s were the best but the real feeling of racing were born in the 80s
Yea no..... Can Am was in the 60s and 70s..... The craziest motorsport series ever.....and the 917 was the crown jewel of both can Am and sports endurance......
What happened to the channel?
Original creater made some extremist comments (killing people based on political beliefs), got booted from creative control, and the company has been on a downward damage control ever since.
Watched an old video today.... realized I hadn't seen a post in forever, where are you guys?
That is just awesome!
is this channel dead
We need new content please 😅
No 👎
The video length is 9.59
Any new content coming? Love the car reviews and the owners appreciation/point of view.
Brilliant!
IMAGINE having to try to convince The Dakar Rally to allow a version where old cars/classics from the past could take on the brutal journey that is The Dakar Rally once again.... utter madness
just goes to show how mostly everything is ran by people who shouldn't be there.
Any more content coming our way or have you given up?
Does petrolicious still make videos?
I really hope so...
Why this chanel no more video?
Missing this content
Do you guys know how difficult It is to keep this Channel updated? People hace to leave others film them with their cars and the profesional editing that goes with It simply CZcams ads cannot pay for the effort that went intonold petrolicious videos... I speak from experiencia as I tried to Make my own car videos un a ver y similar way. If we all paid to get these videos monthly. The quality would remain amazing for years to come
Are you guys alive? It's been almost a year now since your last upload. Miss your videos.
Where is a new videos ???
Buena vídeo tío!

Come back we need u

Ah, I see it’s different, but now I can’t remembrer what it was before! Could you describe it? Thanks, and sorry for the bother…

in order to win, you need the fewest points

Why no videos?
What happened to Petrolicious?
No new videos once their members only archives ran out.
Whats happened to the channel? No content for such a long time.
The first is World Cup Rally 1974
so sad how whomever took over this channel just a while ago has managed to run it into the ground. a tragedy. miss the old Petrolicious. this is a mere shadow of its once self unfortunately 🤦🏻♂️
