It warms my heart to see an old, RWD, Swedish Volvo.

I never saw this commercial, but I love the tongue-in-cheek flavor of it, along with the glint in Mr. Swayze's eyes at the end of it. Wonderful commercial!

That is a 142. 145 was the station wagon. The last number in the model number says how many doors the old Volvos got. 142 two doors. 144 four doors. 145 five doors.

John Cameron Swayze was speechless! lol though the Volvo did get a smile out of him. He never smiled when he was reporting.

His son JCS Jr., who went by the name Cameron Swayze, was a well-known radio news anchor in the New York area for decades. As far as I know he did not do any commercials.

Cool, thanks for uploading! Except it’s a Volvo 142, because it’s a two door.

We all know those NA redblock Volvos weren't rip snorters, but the BMW 2002 and Datsun 510 were made at the same time, making probably the same power.

A friend had a 1970 142. It was in good shape for being about 10 years old at the time. But there was absolutely nothing sporty about it. Fast enough to get on the freeway but that was about all. A co-worker had a later model 242 which was a little more luxurious, but also not the least bit sporty. I think the commercial is a little bit misleading in how it portrays the car as being a "road racer" type of vehicle. I remember the station wagon versions as being the most popular.

I think you're mis-interpreting the commercial. John Cameron Swayze had been a spokes person for Timex Watches which were billed as being "Tough". They take a licking and keep on ticking was the saying......they are portraying the car as "Tough", not "Sporty" I don't know of anyone that would think of a Volvo 142 as sporty, it's a Tough Swedish Car.

@@OsbornTramain I understand what you are saying and can vaguely remember those old Timex watch commercials. I have a hard time envisioning either Volvo I rode in being driven that aggressively but I'm sure its possible with a professional driver.

From a time when Volvos were still purely Swedish, and free of either American - or infinitely worse, Chinese ownership - or any of their nonsense. Even as a Finnish American who likes to make good-natured jabs at our Nordic neighbor/arch rival (and former master from long ago), the current incarnation of Volvo pales in comparison to what once was. 😢

Shame they sped some of the footage up. That spoils it.
