We became the best at a regrettable skill - fooling the Magician to buy. Magic is not a business, it is an Art, and it does not belong to any Magician - Magic belongs to the experience, ownership only destroys that. Magic is Dead for many reasons, but ‘Magic Businesses’ are near the top of that list… regardless, we must convince the world to believe otherwise. Mad Love, Chris, Magic is beautiful.
I just read somewhere recently that magic is the emotion, created in the person experiencing the [trick/act]. It was regarding User experience design, but it very well fits Chris's thesis. It's never about the mechanics. Mechanics without imbued feeling is just porn/masturbation.
You both are the two reasons I became interested in learning how to use a deck of cards. I always understood that there was stuff you guys did with Ellusionist was business and a job. And I didn't really pay that side of magic any mind, I loved the tutorials from you back then and you could see your enjoyment compared when you did the tutorial side and not as much from the gimmic side. That's why I began the journey and fell in love with decks of cards and not the magic gimmicks. Your both in my mind the two best and I like your street performances and tutorials to this day, i can always learn something new even if i have watched those videos 100×s .

I think the best magicians aren't magicians, they're performers. The tricks are just part of the show, and for me it's stories, patter and performance around the tricks are the real magic. I may have seen the trick many times before, but if it's performed well, I'm still entertained. I've also had a lot of fun with simple tricks. I used to travel a lot for business, hotels are boring but being able to sit at a bar and do some basic card, coin or other tricks was a great conversation starter and ice breaker.

I used to street perform as a juggler...and did some magic as well. Most of the things my partner and I did (where magic was concerned) was exactly what you talk about: store-bought tricks. We put our own spin on some things, but still...we hit a point where we realized, "We're not really special..." We enjoyed the friendships and hanging out with other jugglers (and much better magicians), but ultimately stopped performing because we put too many expectations on it as our identity.
I'm much happier today hanging out in a park with my wife and juggling together (if nothing else, juggling [and magic] led to 31 years of marriage so far)...or practicing the occasional magic trick and sharing it with her."
I respect the hell out of magicians really pushing themselves and doing new things...especially when it's so easy to do things others are doing and feel great in front of an audience who's not seen it.

I agree wholeheartedly. You're videos made me fall back in love with magic and want to relearn the card tricks I did when I was a kid. I even expanded a little and learned some basic move sets that I wish I had known back then. I've always loved creating in general and making the knowledge I've learned my own, and you do just that so incredibly well. You're videos are always well done and the intros/montages are quite beautiful and inspire me to expand my creativity. You're use of photography and filming is a cut above what I'm used to seeing on CZcams. I've never regretted clicking the random video of yours that was suggested to me 6 years ago. Man you're inside my brain. thanks for expressing this, having been in magic and comedy albeit very lightly and in podcasting and youtube over the years its interesting to see these things come up for you at your high level. it's made me hardened to sharing and that is sort of a setback to me personally but its also been a superpower to me developmentally to be able to self sensor and not risk disappointing myself when someone does something i hoped to get involved in. Really lifted by your journey this year Christ i think you're a great leader in this space and i hope whatever you do fulfils your soul first and foremost. we will be here to support you.
What you are taking about is exactly why I stopped doing magic. Doing magic became my personality and I hated it. Nice seeing this point of view and reminding people of expressing themselves through magic. Maybe I will get back to it.
Was wondering where the video was going when I saw the link to the shop in the description but am more than happy with the view you share. I don't do magic as much these days (still carry a deck of cards around bc you never know) but finding a magic society that wasn't overly secretive about teaching people magic was one of the best times I've had with magic.
Also just thank you for red pill because that was one of my tricks that taught me how important the performance aspect of magic was.
Chris, this is the same reason the magician did The Masked Magician specials series on Fox tv in the U.S. He got tired of the same tricks being done to death, and inspire creativity within the Art of Magic amongst magicians; good, great and new.

When you talked about magic needing to leave the knock knock joke stage I couldnt help but think of Derek DelGaudios In & Of Itself - the way he used magic as a special effect in the telling of a story rather than asking the trick to carry the story itself.
Dude, you just explained my (and I'm sure many other's) introduction to magic. My bread and butter was Oz Pearlman's DVD on card magic. I believe it was titled "Born to Perform." I used the lines from that disc verbatim so many times that I can still recite some of the routines line for line, even though I haven't performed them in years, and I remember practicing the lines as much as the magic. If I'd have put that much effort into recreating the tricks, I'd have come up with my own variations of them, honoring the skill learned from the Original performers. This is a great message for any intro magicians, and a great reminder for seasoned ones. Stay original. Use what you've learned as influence for change, and improvement. Don't stay stuck in the past. I dig the push for personal growth; I think we've atrophied as a species in this department and it's good to hear a challenge to complacency without a ton of emotion; good or bad. I think what you said goes far beyond magic; "learn and regurgitate" without any further thought or tinkering has the potential to do all kinds of harm- medical malpractice comes to mind first ("Here take this pill that should work because someone 50 years ago said it would and I don't feel like/have the time to apply myself to determine the root cause of your issue") but: art, music, science, analysis, business, etc all benefit from the application of original thought to then fail and/or flourish. Never give up (complacency), never surrender (stagnation)!

Chris I watched you growing up. I remember watching you roughly 6-8 years ago when I was in love with magic. I was in love with creating that sense of awe, and the attention it brought. You were one of the biggest inspirations to come to try and create. You inspired me to sit down in my own and try to use creativity to create, rather than watch CZcams videos on how to perform tricks. I just found my old magic book 5+ years later and learned a trick. I performed it sorta lazily with some friends and they were blown away. I was about to go surf CZcams to learn a new trick, but this put a whole new perspective on it. I want to CREATE to Inspire and bring awe. Not just spin like a record with programmed tricks.
Thank you Chris. I’m sorry it’s been a hard year for you. It can get better. I had several mental health issues surface that I was not ready for and it knocked me on my butt. There is hope. Particularly in Christ.

Well said! I love watching your content, for its look, professionalism, excitability, intrigue and all round connection with the viewer. Your channel was how I first learnt card magic and I enjoyed watching magic and on my own practising but the moment I did anything 'magic' related my hands would shake, I'd stutter and hated every second as i was so worried of showing the method or secret. The beginning of this year I plucked up the courage to perform infront of others and through time got better and now have a show that i present on stage and actually some close up aswell. I become inspired from something and research everything and eberyone that has done it before and then try to make it my own. This video reminded me of others I've met along the way and is so true that people who don't know magic don't know. Your words have reminded/ignited and inspired me to not give up on past projects i was worried to persue. Well said once again and love to see what new projects/content you have in 2024.

honestly, a lot of what you’re talking about is why I’ve drifted toward mentalism with time. it’s so much harder to get something pre-packaged or to exactly copy someone bc so much of it is dependent on how you specifically create a presence. what makes people listen to you? can you direct their attention, or can you only do tricks that work for themselves? what can people believe about you? are you a mind-reader, a hypnotist, a behavior analyst, etc.?
you have to know yourself to answer those questions, and you have to answer those questions for any of it to be effective. it’s rlly forced me to elevate who I am as a performer rather than merely escalating my tricks

I’ve stayed watching your channel because you are such an engaging thinker and talker. I am not a performer, but just an admirer of the art both of magic and comedy, and original presentations of any kind (think Cirque de Soleil, for example). But I am going to put myself out there a little this year. It’s time.
The key difference between these two arts though, is that audiences are trying to crack a magician, catch his/her method. Nobody says to a comedian “I see what you did there”. I think that’s a big reason for the crutch. Just MHO.

I saw a quote once that said “magicians are cover bands who think they’re The Beatles”
I think that is true to some extent but I don’t think it’s possible for every magician to perform wholly original material.
That’s why the presentation matters. You should always be putting your own unique spin on the trick, even if the method itself is the same.
I think a more constructive analogy is to compare magicians to chefs. Every chef can make a chicken parm but they all do something different that makes it their own.
That’s how we should be. There are definitely a lot of “cover band” magicians but I don’t think every person who performs effects created by other magicians falls into that category.
There are a lot of magicians who I would say are chefs who are creating their own spin on an old recipe. They don’t create their own material, but they do really unique stuff with existing effects.

This video should be at the beginning of every Magic101 video or course (or any artistic/subjective course). It rings so true. I come from the classical (and rock) guitar world, and basically, you can buy all the Bach, Scarlatti, or Barrios sheet music and play it note for note, but what differentiates the good guitarist from the greats is the *interpretation* of the piece, and putting your own personality and technique into it. Even with rock/pop/blues guitar - you can just copy licks verbatim note for note, or you can put your own unique styling or phrasing on them to make it your own and create your own signature style. Technique and practice IS important, but execution with personality is the goal.
Very sound & solid advice, which you can apply to every aspect of life's challenges.
Isn't this exactly why Penn & Teller would expose a trick but then follow it up by putting their own twist on it?

Buying and performing another’s trick is great to grow your skill. It’s up to the magician to build on those skills. I’ve seen tricks that are nothing more than a simple trick from a child’s magic kit but is made into an amazing new performance. Magic happens when we take concepts and create originality! As someone in the mental health field it was interesting to learn about the back stage part of performing magicians. Even more so the encouragement to continue to grow.
I’m late but this really got me thinking, I never bought a gimmick except for duplicate cards and stuff and relied only on sleights, I realised that what I do are just tricks but the way I do and present them is the real magic! Convincing the audience is the real magic! Nowadays any magic video I see on social media are the same heavily repeated tricks or gimmicks which don’t seem impressive anymore, the gimmicks and props are amazing if you combine them with heavy skills but what makes the performance even better is our personality as you mentioned. You must not be known as “the guy who does magic” but rather let magic be a sidekick to your personality.

I've always wondered why the art of magic has not progressed like comedy has. My nephew is embarking on a comedy career and the amount of work and creativity is intense. Exactly why I haven’t bought anything for the last four years and stopped performing as often. I realized my personality is more interesting without magic, and then magic can be one of the things I do after I get to know people. And now I barely perform, I do miss it but when I perform it is more special. Thanks for talking about it chris! I know there is a guy or two out there that is tired of being the “magic guy” and don’t know what to do.

(haven't performed since I was a kid, but...rings with some reactions I used to get from adults...and other kids, at the time. Used to think it was just one thing, but I didn't get that it was something else -- your vid kind'a makes me wanna try practicing again -- 50 yrs later!) My main love is watching though!
i could not agree more , i recently performed my first street magic stuff , if i am being honest , i messed up the first trick i did , the red hot mamma , i thought that it is the end of magic for me , but then i moved on to the next effect and it went great , i was just panicking a bit , the reactions were exactly as i dreamed but my reaction was not , i thought i would be on top of the world for atleast a week but it was not the case , sure i was happy for the next hour atmost , but now i realise it was just for making memories not for the participants but for me , magic is not about them it is about us , they dont care about the method but we should , because the riskier the method the more satisfaction it gives , i love it when i get away with the suzan shift by daniel madison or the top card control by chris ramsay , i love magic not because it is a way to talk to girls ( i started because of it ) but because it is a way to make memories , and even if you mess up the memory is still made .

Spot on, brother. I always think about this, the idea that magic is one of the only talents that can technically be bought in a store.
It’s a challenge to really elevate yourself as a person and a performer, to make yourself connect with them on a different level than “pick a card”.
It’s incredibly challenging to create your own concept of effect. But the real challenge is making an effect your own.
I am so glad I am seeing this as a beginner in magic, so I know how to be better, I never would have thought about magic like this. Thank you Chris!
People like Chris Ramsay want to make your life harder. You’re taking inspiration from the wrong person. I recommend Pete McCabe he has a great book on scripting magic :)
I LOVE this! It's so true. When I started magic was fun and defining for me. Then at the age of 15 doing shows something would go wrong and I had to improvise. I grew and started hoping for those "failures", they were funnier. Soon I became an improv comedian because of this and didn't rely on the tricks. Magic became wonder I could add to bizarre comedy. 35 years later, I love magic more than ever.
Nothing but FACTS. Starting high school, I’ve been showing magic tricks so I can easily get along and talk with others to make friends. But the exact same thing happened to me. Whenever I wanted to make friends, magic was always in the picture to stop that from happening. It was definitely a heavy toll for a teenager during and aft covid. I still do magic now but only bcuz I enjoy the art, ive made tricks of my own and I’m currently learning coin tricks instead of cards. But it is nice that know that I’m not the only one that felt the same

As an amateur hobbyist who started late in life, I am guilty as charged, shop bought packaged tricks, although I have come up with a couple of my own. I agree with everything you said, anyone can learn a trick, not everyone can engage their audience & give a performance. Thanks for the honesty 👍
There's something really encouraging about this even for a layperson. It feels applicable to just about anything, especially the part about taking risks.
Well... maybe this year I'll be able to. When the current upheaval (moving house) dies down, hopefully I'll have time and brainspace to do something creative.

I've seen magicians perform tricks that I know how to do, but their performance of that trick, and their interpretation of it, is what makes them really good at it. Yeah I can do a double lift, but that isn't a presentation or a performance. I know how a clip shift works, but watching Jason Maher do it is art. Good performers integrate their personality into their performances.
I agree 100% I'm only a novice magician I don't really perform anymore in my adulthood like I did when I was a kid, but I still keep up with magic and how stuff is done because I still have a passion for it. There's so many magicians now on social media and a lot of them are just repeating each others tricks. Even on AGT a lot of the magicians are using very basic magic techniques, but still some how managers to woo the crowd. I get disappointed a lot especially on a big stage like AGT, because I know how a lot of the tricks are done and I'm over the forcing a card trick because you start with that and you know anything about forcing cards it ruins the whole trick for you majority of the time. Like I think my least favorite line in magic is "tell me when to stop" immediate disappointment when I hear that line, because then I know how it's done. There's only been a handful of magicians on AGT that impressed me Shin Lim obviously being one, Eric Chien I think was super underrated his card color changing and adding in the coins was just pure genius and amazing slight of hand. Now if they're using slight of hand even if I know how it's done if they're really good at it I'll be impressed like Florian Sainvet with the CD's that slight of hand was some of the best I've ever seen even though I have some idea how it's done I couldn't replicate that unless I just all the sudden decided to start practice several hours a day. Then there was that guy that came back to AGT masked I think as X or something like that Marc Spelman his name just dawned on me almost forgot, like his magic wasn't too crazy but it's how he connected everything and the story behind it was amazing, super unique, and clever, then there was that guy that had the cool appearing beer act, but he only had the one good act in my opinion. Other then that not many have impressed me, but it did impress a lot of others even if they did steal the tricks from the internet or from some magic shop and maybe made minor changes. I have one trick that I came up with when I was 10 years old I've been doing for 22 years and it's a good one I recently saw a tiktok for the first time a similar variation to my trick I won't go into lot of detail but essentially someone picks a card memorizes it then i have them place it back in the deck let them shuffle deal out 5 cards have them hold in their knuckles then i smack the hand with 2 fingers and the only card left is their card in their hand. The first time I performed it publicly as a kid i smacked it too hard and all the cards fell out of their hand but i got lucky all the cards fell face down except for their card on the floor right side up and everyone flipped their shit I had a whole class room auidence it was better then my actual trick lol because they didnt even think their card was in that hand because the hand was presented to them prior.

I've always been of fan of the thriller franchise: Saw, and thought it would be a cool idea for a box design.
It is just like any other escape box, except you have a certain amount of time to solve each side of the box set up like traps (except nothing can actually harm the player ofc). You have to use notes (or tapes preferably) made by John Kramer, obtained in the beginning and earned as you complete traps in order to navigate the box.
You have 60 minutes to navigate to the middle and obtain the antidote or it's game over, and you will have to reset the box and try again.
I just thought it would be an interesting idea, especially if it was designed by Lionsgate themselves!

Bro, I just read strong magic and designing miracles. The main takeaway was "magic is hard and complex but beautiful, so work for it" and I guess you further hammered that nail in the coffin. I'm quite new to all of this, I started in November 2023 but I'm gonna do my best to get out there in front of people with my own stuff in 2024.
Magic is 80% performance, and 20% the trick. People love a good performance, to be entertained,much more than just a pick a card trick . Penn and Teller turned magic on its head, and that is what Chris is imploring of the community. I really appreciate Chris’s thought on evolving magic to an art and performance. Good luck.

This really hits home on me as a performer (although I am now a music teacher, no longer performing magic). The most unique/original routine was one I devised using "props" from other store bought things, but the aspect that made it "MINE" wasn't the trick... it was the routine. The crux of it was 20th century silks to women's undies. The ROUTINE, was cultivated over years of corporate shows to the point that I KNEW I could bring the most important person in any room (Usually the millionaire/billionaire CEO of the company) onto stage and humanise them in a very funny, but very mutual and enjoyable way for the audience AND the person on stage. What got me booked wasn't that it was extremely fooling... never got booked because people wanted to watch that illusion again, but because they wanted to see that routine done with THEIR boss.
While I also performed select routines from other magicians (Such as a particular book test by Shawn Farquhar), I consider it as doing my own rendition of a cover song from another band. I always modify it to suit my "Genre" of magic. While there are certain "beats" in the patter than are just too iconic to let go from the original, there is something said for the skill of an entertainer to actually be able to hit the same comedic moments.
We don't get annoyed that a musical actor brings their own style/skill/performance to a role of a musical we have seen others perform. They still have to HAVE the talent. One thing entertainers tend not to think about is that it is extremely rare, and exceedingly difficult, to just GET on stage and perform. The mass MINORITY of people can even handle public speaking in front of people at their own church, or work function... let alone be the sole entertainment for an event. THAT is the skill, not the trick, not the magic... being the performer.
