I wasn't totally satisfied with my previous basketball hoop so I made another try at the problem. This time with robots and computer vision! I designed and build this hoop from the ground up with the goal of tracking the ball and directing it into the hoop by tilting the backboard. It works pretty well. My old solid state hoop is old news. Long live our robot overlords.
I wonder what V3 will look like...

This is what algebra teachers are expecting you to do with your life, where you actually use algebra for a job.

If algebra is where you stopped at, your teacher utterly failed at pounding in the lesson that you have more to learn.
Natasel I mean most people won’t do linear algebra, at least in any depth
Its also to help with logical thinking, even if you never use maths from when you were 16, learning to solve problems with it to a high level can really help someone learn to solve problems logically, in stuff like statistics, probability and even just knowing if A then B, that logical stuff.

@@WarlordXial I was also wildly impressed by the time scale. I also like that you use the word wild. I'm a fan of it too.
I've never been confused about how someone has achieved what they've achieved until this video. Everyone else either takes a lot of time, has excess money for the express purpose of producing the videos, outsources the parts they don't know, works in a team, etc.
He has this giant room full of industrial-strength equipment, appears to have about 2 separate degrees worth of engineering skills + practical experience, looks about 23, has apparently no obligations on his time right now, channel isn't funding him, did all this stuff himself, has a wife so obviously not working on this 100% of the time... and even all that would be barely comprehensible if this took 2 or 3 months but he did it in THREE WEEKS. I'm going to be thinking about this for days. I feel like I'm watching some fake video by the CIA meant to make me think that one person did all this in three weeks to intimidate a foreign enemy.
It makes no sense. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, programming, physics, math, machining and 3d printing, all that on top of artistic skills and being able to produce and edit video which is already difficult, expensive, and time consuming. I have no doubt in my mind that this guy can do literally anything he puts his mind into.
Your first shot- you throw the ball - POW - the backboard launches the ball through the roof and nearly into orbit - you sit in awe. The math was correct though... The ball does one full rotation around the earth- nothing but net.

Daniel Halverson - the speed and tiny size of the dart makes it magnitudes harder to do it Mark’s way, but they’re really similar projects. The software here is arguably impressive for its simplicity - mark’s hardware is another level up from this but obviously took wayyyy longer to build up. I have more than a basic understanding of what’s going on but the computational limits that we’re seeing here are a huge factor.
Shots fired!
Seeing multiple engineers tackle the same problem entirely differently is proof we live in the Golden Era
Different challenges demand different solutions. Mark Rober's darts required extremely precise high speed tracking so he used a very expensive Vicon system. The basketball problem doesn't require the same tolerances.
Let's hope these kinds of projects get more common.
Mark usually gets help from other people, I think this guy did it all himself in such short time, not sure he is doing this full time or not but still impressive!

So true😂
Trueee
This hoop is cooler than the previous one but I'm still not satisfied. If you miss the backboard it doesn't go in. How totally lame is that. I think I need to fix that problem...
For all the programmers: I don't normally do my development on windows. I needed the kinect SDK to develop this which only runs on windows (there's a whole studio for recording and playing back streams, putting breakpoints in them and stuff like that - it's actually really nice). I used python for development speed but I should port to C++. I'm normally an OSX dev.
Also, a bunch of people have asked about why I move at the last minute - the reason that I don't begin moving immediately is that it is very common for the estimated trajectory to change in a way that requires a direction reversal (i.e. the estimates don't monotonically approach the correct solution). If that happens, I have to decelerate to a stop then accelerate in the other direction. In the worst case moving one side to the other. I did some basic analysis on this and it seemed on average better to move at the last possible minute. The other issue with a direction reversal is that it gives double the system jerk (rate of change of acceleration) due to going from full positive acceleration to full negative acceleration. This causes bigger mechanical vibrations which can lead to all kinds of issues.
E
I love the fact that you are devoted to educate people.
Wow 49 mins ago
I think maybe version 3 will have an robotic arm to catch the ball and just drop it into the hoop
Bruh.....
With the recent surge the past few years of cool engineering CZcams channels (this one, Mark Rober, Hacksmith, Allen Pan, JLaser) it really makes me wish I knew about how cool being and engineer was when I was in high school. I knew it was obviously a great career path. But I only ever imagined building things for the government or big companies. But the ability to create these awesome side projects probably would have sold me. I know it's not an easy career path and you have to bust your ass.
But engineering has really got a bump to their optics in recent years. A lot of people have realized how cool and practical having this knowledge can be.
"My head will never follow a ballistic trajectory" That's a bold assumption there, sir.
Especially considering subsequent projects; accidental robot chainsaw arm action followed by exploding bat ...
This reminds me of project that I've always wanted to do - multi monitor setup that detects the face of the user and aligns each monitor to perfect position and orientation.
But your project is already couple of coolnesses ahead of my idea.
EDIT:
Another idea that I had is to mount 4 microphones in tetrahedral configuration on mechanized lamp. Those microphones would be used to listen for finger snapping sound, there's four of them in order to triangulate the exact point in space where snapping sound originated from. Then the lamp would move to light the area where you snapped your fingers.
Oo that sounds really cool actually, imagine if it could move to the best position to hide the bezels or something like that
That's a pretty rad idea.
reminds me of the glassless 3d, which tracked the eyes and face.
Virtual reality already does that ;)

Love the concept of a can't miss hoop, and appreciate the engineering and programming that went into this version as well as the others. Not sure if someone has suggested this already, but could you get similar results with a regulation backboard that doesn't tilt in either direction but instead is made up of a grid of small solenoids? You could use all of the same ball tracking you've devised to determine where on the backboard the ball will hit and then rapidly actuate a solenoid or solenoids to redirect the shot in (might not even need to be more than 1 cm of throw for any solenoid). There would be several advantages to this approach if it could be made to work. First, with the solenoids mounted behind the backboard and flush with the surface, unless someone looked carefully they wouldn't notice it was a non-standard hoop (i.e. they wouldn't immediately know you were cheating). Second, solenoids are relatively simple bullet proof components that might be more robust. Third, there might be a way to address the very extreme, line drive shot with this approach. Just a thought. Keep up the good work
Please don’t leave out what people call “nerd stuff” because they think it’s boring whenever you inevitability end up with 10million subscribers. Thats what makes your channel great.

Very cool. One possible improvement idea: You said that you wait til the last millisecond to move the board, and that you have timing problems. You might consider moving the board sooner towards a "best current guess" and then constantly refine the position as more data comes in. This might also look cooler as the board will seem to just smoothly move into place instead of the sudden jolt it has now.
I came here to say this. The motors wouldn't need to be as powerful, but you might need more processing power on the computer side. It should look better though and it would manage hard throws much better.
Yes! I came here to suggest this too. This is exactly what mark rober did with his dartboard
I was thinking this as well, but seeing as there's infinitely many solutions, it might not be viable to calculate where to move to that early in time.
