I've wondered if it is possible to make a basketball hoop where the ball always goes in. Imagine throwing a ball and if it hits the backboard it somehow gets directed into the hoop. Thanks to physics it isn't quite possible to make ALL possible shots go in though you can make a hoop where the ball goes in a lot more often. In this video I show how I wrote a program to calculate the optical backboard then machined and fabricated it. It worked out better than I was expected so I'm really happy with it!
These videos usually take 100+ hours of work and a lot of money in tools and materials. I've made a patreon if you're interested in supporting the creation of these projects: / stuffmadehere

You legitimately need to patent this design and find a company that can mass produce it. I’d buy one, looks fun as hell
can he still patent it, given that it's a parabolic shape and is already patented by people who invented satellite dish?
Justin Chan yes because its for a different application
You cant patent ideas that are allready on the internet
@@ytcsabidealer8387 is right, once its published you cant really patent in anymore
Even if he hadn’t published it, he couldn’t patent the design, because it’s a geometric shape which is not patentable subject matter. Also the concept of redirecting to the center is not novel. The idea of a backboard which always goes in would also be difficult to prove that it is novel. Finally the solution is obvious. So it fails many criteria.
This guy is like 5 different brilliant people put together: an experimental physicist, an applied mathematician, a programmer, an engineer, and a machinist.

Ah the monte carlo simulation. It's the perfect tool for "I don't want to solve this analytically but will throw a bunch of computing horsepower at it."
It is not that hard, just make the backboard a porabola.

This is really cool. I would be interested to see a different application of this gradient descent shape. If you applied this concept to the keys of a computer keyboard, perhaps it will feel more ergonomic than traditional keyboards. I've noticed that good mechanical keyboards generally have shapes that shift upward if that makes sense, so I think you would have to adjust accordingly.
Cheers, I love your work!
Others have mentioned it in part, but I looked it up since I've used it/been around it so much - the Monte Carlo method is just a reference to using inputs with randomness to determine statistical outcomes by just running simulations or the actual experiment until results converge to a reasonable significance. Name comes from... "In 1946, nuclear weapons physicists at Los Alamos were investigating neutron diffusion in fissionable material. Despite having most of the necessary data, such as the average distance a neutron would travel in a substance before it collided with an atomic nucleus and how much energy the neutron was likely to give off following a collision, the Los Alamos physicists were unable to solve the problem using conventional, deterministic mathematical methods. Ulam proposed using random experiments. [...] Being secret, the work of von Neumann and Ulam required a code name. A colleague of von Neumann and Ulam, Nicholas Metropolis, suggested using the name Monte Carlo, which refers to the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco where Ulam's uncle would borrow money from relatives to gamble." - Wikipedia, "Monte Carlo Method",

Idea on how to save 50% of the calculation cost: Simulate only the right or left half, and then mirror it since the game is obviously symmetrical.
Sometimes my genius is almost frightening

The computation time was probably so trivial, that saving time was irrelevant.

@@GreyIceEyes but why
i did really well in high school and thought i was pretty smart. then i went to university for engineering and had my ego shattered. now i'm halfway through third year and my ego has recovered just enough for into be shattered into a million pieces again by this video.
Lmao same thing happened to me. I did really well in high school and thought i was pretty smart until i got to university. Except my ego never really recovered 🤣
Oof
I DO NOT like basketball, but this was more of the "How do I solve this weird problem?", which I do find interesting. Just trying to guess boundary conditions, second guessing assumptions, and figuring out the proper parameters of a novel problem is an ART! If you work on a version two, you will have a huge set of information to create a better model. Great stuff!
Another idea for a basketball shot that always scores by going in the hoop is to take the problem from the point of view of the shooter and keep the large square basketball hoop backboard so that it is the same flat surface that is common in the game of basketball.
If the direction, speed and type of spin (often called "English") can be properly predicted from a given point on the basketball floor, then the ball will always go into the basket. So as long as the ball goes through the air and hits somewhere on the backboard but the ball has the proper spin and rate of spin, then it will go in the basket.
There are many basketball players throughout history who have used this principle to make unusual shots that surprised their opponents... by putting a lot of spin on the basketball and at the same time directing their shot to a certain location on the backboard where this kind of spin is most advantageous, they have been able to make a lot of shots, often during games, that resulted in points.
So a basketball shooting device (perhaps a robot_like thing perhaps with two arms or maybe something that looks more like an air_cannon or something like that) takes a basketball then shoots it at a certain angle with a certain speed... the location on the backboard can be predicted. Based on that calculation, the spin rate and direction of spin on a ball (so that's 3_D spherical spin not just 2_D spin) can be calculated.
Consequently it stands to reason that a device that will always make a basket with a basketball shot regardless of where it hits a flat regular backboard regardless of where the ball was shot from, this can be calculated. Therefor it stands to reason, that device could be made that shoots a ball at the backboard, and because of the speed and direction that the the shot came from AND the type of spin and spin rate of a basketball... the basketball shot against a backward can always be done so that it goes into the hoop every time.
(Of course wind speeds and air thickness do to moisture or lack of moisture could be a problem... but since basketball is often played in doors, then those extra complication factors can be figured out at another time by someone that wants to make that improvement in design.)
For extra credit a ball shooting machine that shoots one basketball after another (much like this is done by shooters in the three point contest and that type of thing) this could be created that never misses after shooting the ball at the flat normal basketball backboard.
Of course this could have application to Androids playing basketball... because as far as shooting goes the calculations would be the same... or robots or cyborgs or any similar kind of creature or creation that might to be playing basketball.

Most goals actually have backboard below the longitude of the rim so that could change things. And there is a protrusion from the backboard to the rim. Also maybe make the next one full size? This would change the angle but I think it would be advantageous to you at a flatter angle.
