CLIP DESCRIPTION:
L.T. (Tommy Lee Jones) and Aaron (Benicio del Toro) fight to the death.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A rogue special-forces soldier is tracked down by his former mentor in this action thriller from director William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist). In his first role since winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2001, Benicio del Toro stars as Aaron Hallam, one of the U.S. military's most skilled hand-to-hand combat operatives. In the years following his successful assassination of a Serbian warlord in late-'90s Kosovo, Hallam finds himself plagued by traumatic flashbacks of death and destruction, so much so that when he finally returns home, he regresses into a feral, survivalist state in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. There, he deliberately and elaborately hunts and kills poachers who happen to cross his path. When the FBI investigates the murders, they call in the man who taught Hallam everything he knows: retiree L.T. Bonham (Tommy Lee Jones). As the instructor pursues his unhinged former pupil, Bonham begins to learn about key events in Hallam's life that pushed him over the edge.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. As I understand it was based in part on the real life person of Tom Brown, the tracker and wilderness survival expert. Taught by an Apache elder in wilderness survival, tracking, hunting and their fighting arts. I was reading his books right around the time this movie came out so I was super excited to see this movie. The hand to hand and blade fighting choreography was awesome, unique and filmed well. Not to mention the casting of Benicio and Jones worked well.
the pain he must of felt to take out a pupil who was unable to turn off the killer instinct
The interesting part is that this was based off a true event, though highly exaggerated in the movie.
That was probably the point. Hallam could have killed him at most of the slashes with a stab instead. I think he wanted LT to feel the pain of killing
@@harrys288 ding ding the look in his eyes when he did the bicep pierce was a dead giveaway.

Damn.
Mr_No_One I think a knife attack would be a hell of a lot more painful than gun

One of the best climatic knife fights I’ve seen in a movie so far
Would've been better if they minimized the cutting and wounds. Would've been a testament to their skill and ferocity. Even so loved this movie
@@frankdeleon4209no matter how much skill you got, in a knife fight it’s gonna be that ugly, if you survive that long tho..
Underrated movie
Underrated meaning ?
@@gamer12463 Meaning the “critics” butchered the movie and it was a box office disaster when it came out. Yet, this movie was ahead of its time, given movies like “American Sniper,” “Thank you for your Service,” and other anti-war films dealing with the mental anguish solders face long after their physical battles are over.
@@lukenorth7127 you realize it's just a Rambo copy ?
@@113WhiteBoy113 In many ways, yes, it’s a copy of Rambo. In some ways it is original. If you’re implying the First Rambo movie has priority for applause for bringing awareness to veterans with PTSD and things of that nature, yes, you’re probably right. But this is a good movie n
@@lukenorth7127 It wasn't at disaster at the box office, it only barely broke even. Regarding American Sniper, it did paint an unromantic picture of war and PSTD but it never had the balls to question the War in Iraq. I really wish the film was directed by Oliver Stone or Brian De Palma instead because they would have roasted the US Government.
I used to take kali back in the day. These fight scenes are the most realistic you will see, this is why I loved this movie. My instructor 1st rule though about if a someone pulls a knife on you in real life. RUN.
Reminds me of the red marker story. Martial arts master gives a student a red marker, says come at me, eventually the master disarms him, but by then, the master is covered in red.
First time I ever saw the "drop the knife to the other hand" trick.
Still feels like cheating. 🧐
Extremely underrated film. No doubt
Friedkin is one of the best action film directors, and he's one of the best because his films do not fit into the generic conventions of the action genre.
Unlike most directors who simply leave everything to the second unit, Friedkin was intimately involved with the action sequences.
I saw this movie today and it is very underrated. I highly liked it, and it was very different. The fight scenes were badass, well-choreographed and executed, and it wasn't ruined by that new shaky cam effect which makes fight scenes look terrible and un-choreographed nowadays. I would give this movie a 3/4. I like Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones; I think they are very talented actors and BDT should be in more movies, but luckily Tommy gets in many great movies and is very well-known.:)
lol "keep the faith Strannix"
0:28 < Such a smooth move. 😮👍
Nobody talks about this movie and it's so good. Benicio barely speaks but his scenes are so impactful.
Aaron didn't want to kill him. Aaron wanted LT to kill him, employing what he was taught by LT.
He wanted LT to fully 'know' the price. In Aaron's mind he won by making LT kill him.
Now, LT will realize what he has created and will have to live with it now that he has killed.
Go back to the meaning of the snare.
Damn dude someone got As in school lol. In all truth tho LT should have died lol. Banicio fucked him up!
@@davebyrd1394 It could be some inverted reference to that as well. Good movie. Though, with Aaron's experience of killing, I think he would have done LT in a matter of seconds
Aaron had two chances to stab L.T in this scene and chose to slash him.I'm sorry three chances.
@@ikapatino3214 that's because Aaron wanted LT to kill him, he could have easily removed the knife from LT's arm and gone for a heart stab if he wanted to. he wanted to force LT to kill him. so he could put to rest, and LT would finally have blood on his hands for ignoring Aaron's letters and cries for help.
@@pethrosuriahson6156 thanks for telling

When I watch this movie I think of the veterans in my life that I've known that have killed or been in combat situations. It makes me sad that they can go into military service with good intentions and having a good heart only to come back a different and damaged person. This isn't a comment of disrespect as I've never served, only an observation of what can happen to someone who experiences the horrors of war from a civilians perspective. I like the ending where it shows TLJ helping a wild wolf set free from a trap it was ensnared in but the symmetry of the movies point was that he couldn't help out a hurting trapped soldier that was crying out for help just like the wolf.
@JBryan314 well spoken and I stand corrected sir. Thank you for your most honorable service and may God bless you with peace and healing.
@JBryan314 the bible is what I'm referencing when I use the word 'God' and he's more experienced and prepared for war than you or any special forces soldier or any terrorist in the world (no disrespect). None of this is a surprise to Him. It's in His word. Not trying to convince you just letting you know that there will be nowhere any man can hide from Him or His enemies regardless of your training or expertise in combat. Dont get me wrong, I'll protect my family to the best of my ability, which is simply a father's love with no real training but I'm prepared and I've prepared my children for the next life in Christ Jesus. Hopefully you will too sir.
@JBryan314 and I agree with you to a point but that's where Jesus will let you as an individual worship and seek Him with all your heart. I cannot make a nation repent but I can open up my bible today and submit my life unto Him .
I looked up the tracker knife, the one used in this movie and they are so good but so so more rare. They are practically relics for how valuable
That lucky stab in the heart reminded me of the Blade II final fight.
He didn't get stabbed in the heart but near it
It looked quite calculated to me. The initial strike hit lower on the midsection and then he kneed the back of his own wrist to drive the blade up through his heart/lungs.
I can't figure out whether he was crazy, or was telling the truth the whole time.
Perspective
Both maybe,
Only Segal knows how to finish Tommy Lee Jones off in a knife fight.
The gallons of blood being spilled here is ridiculous, lol
Why didn't LT answer his letters, back when he was asking for help?
That knife (BTW Tops Tracker) is rather wide. It would require formidable force to penetrate the ribcage, or he would have to carefuly place it sideways between two ribs. Both requires time and stability so it qualifies as a finishing move after you succesfully wounded and stunned your oponent. And stab under the arm or in the armpit is very dangerous since its likely to hit either brachial or subclavian artery leading to unconciousnes in 2-14 seconds. LT is very lucky that did not happen.
Actually that's incorrect even seven years later after this comment was made someone was bound to have an opinion lol...
The knife used for the film was the Beck WSK, the original Wilderness Survival Knife designed by Tom Brown. They are much thinner and better edge geometry than the Tops TBT1. Perfectly capable of the carnage seen here.
The Tops Tom Brown Tracker was designed for Tops by Tom Brown Jr. It is a completely different beast than this particular knife. The Tops is 1/4" of 1095 high carbon steel. And does not have the traditional Beck quarter round, instead is a gentle sweep to create the guthook secondary bevel.
How do I know all of this? Well I'm holding the knives in hand as we speak lol. Look me up on Facebook Hemlock Customs or follow me on IG @d.b.hemlock. Knives are my livelihood.
However good on you for at least knowing about the Tops Tom Brown Tracker. I believe everyone should own one, I've used mine for many years including on the fire department. I've ripped open car hoods with my Tracker. Absolutely beast of a blade.
So there's a bit of knowledge no one asked for and nearly a decade later... You're welcome lol
@@CineresCineribus And here I go down the "custom knives which I technically can afford but really shouldn't spend my money on given that I already have a Fallkniven A1 and a Cold Steel Trailmaster" rabbit hole again... Lucky for me and my wallet, their books are closed off until 2022.
Thanks for the follow up, man.
Regarding the second to last paragraph. Which Tracker did you ripped open a car hood with? The TOPS ot the Beck? And why not just use a fireman's axe?
@@smolkafilip Very nice collection! I know exactly what it's like when you get into the custom world. RIP my PayPal account lol.
For the explanation of the car hood, we were at a training session for extraction class. Plenty of old vehicles to test out equipment like the Jaws of life etc. Polaski tools, combi tools, axes etc. Just training to open up doors, hoods, removing B post safety and so forth.
While there I just wanted to see what my Tops Tom Brown Tracker T1 was capable of. And sure enough it went through the hood and hacked a hole large enough to get a hose line blasting into the engine bay. It was also capable of giving me enough leverage to pop the lock open on the hood too as a prybar. VERY capable knife lol.
But this was a closed environment and I was simply testing the capabilities of my edc gear. Not something I'd recommend for every day use nor as the first to use as first responder. Merely a test while bored at mandatory training 😂
I felt sorry for Benico Del toros character just a very troubled man.
Such a gritty, lean film that doesn't forget to say something worthwhile. This is the kind of film Don Siegel would have made.
Very interesting, I never thought of it that way.
and how many of you have killed a human or even gutted a animal the fact is its a movie anybody who can take that much damage and still stand like they do in the movie is amazing and if i ran across a man who could still fight all cut up fuck that ill jus walk away or run in that case but still love this movie
Doctor here. The bicep stab (major artery) would have him pass out in 30 seconds and be dead in under 5 minutes.
Such an underrated movie...
The General from Captain America met The Collector from Guardians Of The Galaxy
This is a awesome movie
i wanted him to get away
Same... lol.
I just came here to see the gravity drop knife technique
is the knife used by benicio a Tops Tom Brown Tracker knife?
sorry I loved this movie and have met some real-life knife soldiers and I find it hard to believe the directors direction of the movie in no way would tommy Lee jones suppose to live through that fight. Great movie created a lot of Hollywood knife enthusiast. Great actors..
This is good, but Tommy Lee Jones had a better Kali scene with Steven Seagal in "Under Siege"
Benicio broke his wrist filming this scene
Whats horrible about the fight is that the love of my life dies -_-
I wish Benicio had turned his blade on criminals instead. A sort of Batman, but different.
yes you are right.you must fight to the last breath.some great fight scenes.brutal and ugly.very good movie.
Extremely brutal scene 😧

Sad.
Tommy Lee Jones is the White Denzel
Ouch 🤕 injury like that lose blood 🩸 and
Aaron played the same carracter as Anton.
What a horrible way to fight. "the easy part is killing. The hard part, is knowing when to turning it off."
do you know how much fucking blood is lost during this scene.
Aaron, Aria, Anton..
No, Hallam was trying to kill the old man but cunning and will power won over strength and skill.
Ah, i guess i can see what you are saying.
kali
No way that I'll man would've took a killer like that
0:30 that's where Arya learnt to switch hands.
It kinda makes sense if you want to explain the stare, but I am still puzzled why he'd fight so hard against everyone else only to ask his instructor's help in assisted suicide.
But maybe that was the point. Doesn't want to die by anyone else's unworthy hands.
No comment....
Goodthing its a movie dude wouldve died already with that many deep cuts and stabs lol
Not necessarily couch potato
As well performed as it is unrealistic.
the method they employ is 100% spot on. A Filipino method I think. But what I meant was, that situation is horrible, to take such damage to the body.
Great movie though :)
Eh, it would've gone against the momentum of the fight if he went for a stab. In other words it would have a taken a little longer to position himself to stab him, leaving him open to another blow. Take that with the adrenaline they both have in the fight they just wanted to get as many hits in as possible. Or, you could chalk it up to weak choreography but I doubt it.
Don't fuck with Chuck Norris's dad...
what is horrible about it?that is how you should fight if you are in a life and death struggle.
Why didn't he just stab LT in the chest at 0:29 and 1:05 instead of slashing him? And at 1:15 he goes for under the arm instead of the chest or neck. I love the style of fighting in this movie but this fight scene has always bugged me.
Beacuse he wanted L.T to kill him.
pff

Old spec ops mans vs young speec ops boy the old man gets cut in the stomoach , hand, neck, ear, leg, through the arm and still figting keep in mind that the old man never kill a person but the boy did
***** you're a soldier? o_o
cool
what old people have that lack young people is endurance gained through a whole life of hard work and suffering and experience.
Yeah but old so theyre slower and weaker.
NOT VERY SHARP
So TLJ plays a lifelong civilian who's never killed anyone and with no combat training, but used to train special forces in knife fighting. Sure, why not? And he manages to beat a psychotic special forces veteran, with multiple confirmed kills, and who's half his age in a knife fight. This movie isn't as realistic as some of its fan think.
Actually he was prolly trained in combat by his father. But ye beating his young student was like meh to me. But i guess other comments explained pretty good.
Aaron let LT kill him. See the look at 1:21. It's very subtle so most people missed it.
Terrific film. Raw. As close to "real" as possible...till the final knife fight....Del Toro vs Jones. No way Jones would have lived. He was the instructor years prior. But, Del Toro was younger (his character) and was "in-action" often. He was "practiced"...younger, faster and stronger. If anything the knife fight should have been with the "2nd best" in his class. Roughly the same age...or a past student of Jones...maybe not as strong but more experienced than Del Toro's character. Or have one of the agents shoot him before he makes a death stab that would have killed Jones.
Aaron let LT kill him. See the look at 1:21. It's very subtle so most people missed it.
That was somewhat entertaining but completely unrealistic.
