When he started punching desh face with the book. Savage
Fun fact Matt actually hit Joey with an elbow and he said he saw a white flash in his eyes. Close being knocked out
He hurt his hand doing that.
John Wick 3 book fight style is inspired here
Tried to crush his windpipe with the book’s spine. Didn’t work.
@@jeffghant4760Agreed with what you said there!
Jason "anything could be weapon" Bourne
It's called escrima. Filipino fighters didn't always have access to the best weapons other than sticks, asparagus knifes, and machetes so they had to improvise with whatever they had. Using the spline of a book to choke someone out from behind is just one example.
@lastfirst78 me being Filipino. My grandfather that trained several generations of us. And his experience during WWll fighting the Japanese when he helped developed the art.
The fact that Nicky tried to step in and help shows how close this fight was
agreed. also in Jason Bourne she picked up some more fighting skills as well as working with a gun.
What makes this scene great is that there’s no music during the fight
Thanx Dan
Or, jokes being cracked... ala, Arnold. Stallone. Snipes, or any other "action star". 🙄
Too much cutting, though.
Why would there be music during a fight scene? I never heard any music during any violent action scenes going on.
I found the editing phenomenal.
The fight with Desh was Bourne's hardest fight ever.
Maybe, but I'd like to know who the actor is and also where this was shot.
@@richardjohnson9696 it was shot in Morocco I bought a copy of the dvd from the shop/store he rides past on the motorbike near the bottom of the hill

I always tell my students, never underestimate the power of a book, it's rich in knowledge and of course a great weapon.
Pencils too, YOU KNOW.
Lol
One of the greatest chase and fight scenes in cinematic history. Gripping, tense and intense. The asset is chasing the girl, the police is chasing Bourne, Bourne is trying to save her. It's not only the camerawork and editing but the music. It stops at times, when everyone doesn't know where their target is and starts again when the chases resume. Can watch this over and over again.
Absolutely. And, for me, there's something about the call to prayer audible in the background that adds to the scene's authenticity.
Facts
Nowhere near the best fight scene in cinematic history, too many cuts. The best fight scenes you’ll ever see barely have any cuts in them whereas fight scenes like this have about 3 cuts per second.
This was my favorite fight scene in the Bourne series.
I peed my pants when I first saw it.
@@dinobotpwnz i still do watching this scene. Was scared for Bourne th3 first time I saw it
I still prefer the fight in Germany
i also agree! ultimatum is best, next is identity next is supre..
Whats so great about this sequence is that it genuinely feels like Bourne might not beat him thoughtout the fight eventhough we know he'll come out on top. Its just so realistic that it seems like one wrong move and Desh is gonna take him out. I couldnt remember one fight sequence where this was achieved even remotely.
In the behind the scenes video it is said that Desh is younger and stronger. Have a look at Bond train fight scene in Spectre. Another one where main character is outmatched in terms of strength
Two things I didn't like about this clip: (1) Desh needed a gun to kill that weak girl? How lame; he must be a lousy assassin; (2) Bourne keeps having trouble putting away lesser-trained assassins than himself.
@@TheNameOfJesus Who says Desh is less trained? He proves to be very skilled
@@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor The first ten minutes of The Bourne Legacy have the analysts raving about how Bourne was the best, "off their charts." I think the whole plot of the movie was based on how Bourne was the better than anyone else.
@@TheNameOfJesus maybe Desh was ALMOST as good as Bourne, or maybe his being younger partially makes up for his lesser training.
The jump from the balcony to the balcony next door is genius!
Notice that the glass is CGI
As a lifelong martial artist, this is one of the best choreographed fight scenes in cinematic history
as a martial artist I can imagine you cringe over how these supposed superhuman fighters telegraph each punch as any random drunk at the bar would, am I right?
That's why I hate the "shaky cam" style of shooting so much. They spent all that time training and choreographing the fight...as a viewer I want to be able to SEE IT :(
@@sarahmcfadden8990True but it’s worth it for those three punches by Jason with that book, they sold them so well, it’s like you feel the impact through the screen.
Me grabbing a towel: Time to dry off.
Jason Bourne grabbing a towel: Time to end this....
This was Bourne's most brutal and difficult fight ever
@Chan Zhan Why are you even mentioning those movies when Jason Bourne never fought any of those guys 😂
Different movies, different universe mate. He just meant that out of all the fights Jason Bourne has had, this one was by far his most challenging.
this movie is timeless
thousand times watching it never g3t bored
Nicky took three pretty good shots and was still standing at the end. Impressive.
Very realistic. She knew if Bourne went down, she was done. So yeah, I would try to do EVERYTHING I could to help also!
Desh has pillow fists
@@bensisko4651 Yea, She had been super smart with Bourne. Was sad with her ending.
This is what I love about Nicky and the writing for her character. Women usually portrays in action films as a damsel in distress but for Nicky, atleast she does something to help Bourne
Well she was/is an agent and must’ve had some physical training so she should be able to take hits.
Bourne using the towel to block the strikes from Desh...so handy.
One of the few examples of well used shaky cam. The biggest problem isn't shaky cam itself, but the fact that every film after this tried to use this technique and failed miserably. Mainly because the bourne films have rapidly fast editing throughout the entire film not just the fight scenes, so it adds to the intensity and works well with the style established. Which is why it why it works well here but not in other films that lack the same style and tone. That is just my take at least.
Just like one could watch Breathless (1960) and think jump cuts are not that big a deal, when in fact, that's where it first began
This would be better without shaky cam. The stunt man said Matt was good and did it all. Shaky cam actually shorted Matt on his skills. Shaky cam sucks and should never be used.
IMO The shaky cam in this fight was workable, but worse than the Munich fight in Supremacy. Other movies have horrible shaky cam because directors misuse it for a number of reasons:
* hide actors' inadequacies in performing stunts.
* mask the lame action choreography by making it look so chaotic the viewers can hardly figure out what's happening.
* not understanding its proper use, so directors apply it liberally but nonsensically.
There's probably more, but these are what I can think of at the moment.
@@jiroyamada1139 Yeah I mean it's not like I think shaky cam is the BEST way to film a fight scene. Far from it. Because what makes a fight scene great to me is
-Clarity
-Impact
-Pacing
-Stakes
This is why the house shootout and club scene from John Wick, pretty much every fight from The Raid and Raid 2 are always regarded as top level fights.
So I definitely prefer many fights over Shaky cam fights but this is a fight that at least utilises the technique to a workable level also taking into account that the whole movie uses this type of editing. Whereas most are just flat out shite for the reasons you mentioned.
@@lordoffaiyum9727Well yeah obviously it would be better without shaky cam. I'm just highlighting how compared to the vast majority this is an example of shaky cam being used to a workable level. People forget the entire film is filmed with this rapid style editing. So here it isn't just a gimmick like most of crappy shaky cam fights and it plays into the style of what the director wanted. Whether we prefer it or not is entirely subjective but I do prefer much more clarity in my fight scenes. No better example that The Raid movies.
I love how Jason adapts to Desh’s fighting style and uses his environment against him
I dont see how you can tell what is going on the camera is all over the place
@@MrBfg586 it’s really not but ok, you want shaky can go watch Snake Eyes
At first Desh's aggressivness and pure strenght overwhelms Jason. Moments later Jason adapts and deconstructs Desh's style and pretty much counters all of his attacks. When Jason gets in the zone Desh is unable to land even a single blow and instead goes for the clinch, takes the fight to the shower room and eventually gets killed. Jason was just too experienced for the younger assassin.

02:00: that baby cry in the background… You can feel Nicky’s desperation when you hear it. What a masterful touch.
If Nicky didn't interupt, Jason would've been defeated

Best fight scene in Bourne series ✌️
Always loved watching this series in a crowded movie theater with fans of the series..when he started fighting Desh and used the book as a weapon against his face the entire theater did a collective gasp You heard it and felt it and just added to the enjoyment of the film This scene was epic in my book
And the title of the book was "The Gentle Hand: Checking The Labia"
Yeah I had never thought of using a book as a weapon
I see what you did there! 📚 😉
Sounds like quite a moment. Thank you for sharing.
It was a Newspaper in Supremacy
Best hand to hand fight scene in all of cinema.
I completely agree
Amazing. But, if you watch the fight between Sean Connery, in his prime, versus a young Robert Shaw , in Russia with love, you can say it’s pretty savage as well.
Yup, To think even to this day they still copy this in many movies, noticeably the book like in john wick 3 and the shake cam like absolutely every action movie since. Exact same moves. This movie was ahead of its time, amazing research and picture.
@@PatTheRiot true
I gotta go with the kitchen fight scene in The Raid 2... Just my opinion... But this is top 3 for me...
This was not only the best fight, but the most realistic one. The others always seemed to make Bourne superior to his own assassin peers. But, this one pitted him against an adversary that was technically his equal and maybe a tad better.
If he was better he wouldn’t have lost the fight
@@Yaahboi52 to be fair, desh was actually distracted by that woman when he managed to corner bourne at the table and bourne managed to because of that
Bourne would have probably lost. Bourne was probably a standout among the assassins but don’t forget, he was also the first. Desh was definitely better than Bourne in this fight not only because he was probably just as skilled if not better than him, but because he had youth and strength on his side. Bourne was probably the best assassin they had before he went rogue but his experience just wasn’t enough to compensate for that superior strength and youthful energy
@@Yaahboi52 you’ve obviously never watched sports. Better =/= winning.
@@ElfHostage you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
Just imagine the holder of this flat when he comes after his job and sees the chaos after the fight
Paul Greengrass might be the only director in history that can use this camera style and not give me a headache.
I love how perceptive assets are in these films. Desh is tracking Nicky through dense, convoluted architecture, while Bourne actually spots them both from the rooftop and even catches up to them despite losing line of sight. Nicky has decent survival instincts and even knew to intervene when Desh had Bourne pinned down.
Also the behind-the-scenes are awesome. The cameraman had to jump and follow Matt Damon through that last window!
Looking back now, this style of directing really is a work of art in these fight scenes. It perfectly conveys the brutality and frenetic pace of a battle to the death between 2 trained killers of this caliber. I mean we shouldn't be able to tell exactly what is going on. But all the important stuff, like grabbing a weapon or a tool, the clank of a knife after someone is disarmed...that's all crystal clear. I bet it is a lot harder than it looks to pull off well
I love this fight scene. The one thing that always makes me smile is the book as a weapon. A few of the strikes are definitely impactful, but that part where he puts the book on his face and punches the book. I always find my mind pulling between how choreographically that choice looks and feels brilliant, but in real life, the book would actually be shielding Desh from the impact of the punch. Acting as both a shock absorber and force distributor in one. Still looks amazing though, and that is what you want in your action films.
The only advantage I could think of is that he wouldn't see the strikes coming.
Still, when you've got the dude pinned against broken glass doors by the throat using a BOOK 😂
If you can do that then you deserve to do whatever you want. That sideflip that Desh does just to untwist his arm is REALLY cool though. Absolute ninja 😎
The book might have helped break his stance...
@@techfoolcasey4348 What do you mean?
The real treat with that book came beforehand when he broke the talus and at least a couple of tarsals with that edge thrust straight down to the floor. It's the only time in the fight you hear anyone audible scream in pain (as would anyone in that scenario). The book punching was so. so. He only punched it once anyway; the other two strikes were full forearm lands.
What I like is the way he uses the book on edge first with a shot to the throat, then it’s like the book breaks down against Desh’s face so he just punches it, then since distance always seems to break down he uses his elbow. Fabulously dynamic and yet still believable.
Stunning scene. Whoever did the film editing did an incredible job. Also soundtrack. Explosive!
The locker room fight scene in Eastern Promises is also terrific.
The movie won an Oscar for Best Film Editing, well done
One of the best Bourne fights in the saga.
Desh almost had him until Nicky helped Jason
Masterclass action filmmaking. Not a single word spoken, no music during the fight, just raw physical intensity and emotion. The handheld camerawork is so good. I know some people just don't like it, it's not the slick "let's show you everything so you can follow it easily" action filmmaking the Hollywood crowd is used to, but it's so visceral and it does in fact show you everything you need to see to follow the fight. Imagine staging and filming this sequence - so much hard work and talent went into it. Thank you for not showing the knife fall on the floor - hearing it was enough! I really appreciate when a film doesn't treat its audience like it's dumb and needs to be shown and told everything.
I love this scene for two main reasons… the book and the towel 😂😂
Every fight scene is so good and different one cannot compare
Incredible scene, normally shaky cam is annoying but here it works perfectly to show the frenetic desperation. You totally buy you're watching two highly skilled combatants fight to the death
Even though the fight is shot in frantic shaky way, Greengrass still made it comprehensible and entertaining. Its really hard to utilize the shaky cam like he does.
Better edited fight scene in the mission impossible movies.
One of the most brutal and intense fight scene in modern movies
I gotta give that title to a certain scene in saving private ryan. (Another damon movie)
Nahh, OGs know that the title belongs to either The Raid Redemption or The Raid 2
All Quiet on the Western Front remake .. brutal and not choreographed like this. As actual fighting to death is
Watching this movie in theatres was absolutely unforgettable.
The best Bourne fight in the entire series!
This was such an intense fight you feel like you can’t breathe. This is the only series that uses quick cuts and shaky cam THE RIGHT WAY.
This is probably the best fight scenes ever. Fast cuts AND shakycam but still completely legible and rhythmic.
The use of the book was actually pretty effective (movie script aside) and tossing anything on the sink he could reach until he found a useful tool. Nice touch.
Identity he uses pen, Supremacy a thick rolled up magazine, and Ultimatum a small towel. Bourne Turns all three into a weapon. I can get enough of the original Bourne trilogy all three movies are great. I love the early 2000s vibe I get from this classic trilogy
Desh performance was fantastic in this scene. He was really the right guy.
One thing that people don’t comment on is that this scene shows that Bourne isn’t invincible. He enters the fight winded and gets overwhelmed in seconds. If Nicky doesn’t take the knockout Bourne doesn’t get the few seconds he needs to regroup. But it shows how fast he recovers.
U r right. Nicky helps Bourne here.
The difference between Bourne and Nicky at the end. Bourne is so used to fighting for his survival that when he ends the fight he just catches his breath. Nicky has only seen this world from an office at this point and now she truly knows how awful this program is. That disturbed look on her face at the end of it says it all.
I agree bro. It frightened her to watch someone die..even though he was gonna kill her
So well done
Wow, good point and observation.
Love it when the good book is used
When I first saw the movie and Jason twisted Desh's hand by the fingers I thought "Yeah, you got him!" Then Desh flipped over to escape, I'm like "WTF!" That has to be arguably the greatest escape move in the history of fight scenes!!
Took him a second: "Now which way do I flip?" Good editing.
@@davidwaller2218 I agree
@@ATLienForLife that was their aim!
You believed he had beat with that wrist control but he got out of it
@@chriscage669Yeah, and they hit bullseye! Awesome choreography. Amazing execution.
It was this moment when us, the audience, leaned in thinking Bourne has met his match.
This fight scene isn't about who can beat the other one. Both are equally strong and extremely dangerous. It is about who would survive in order to accomplish their set agenda. Fight coordinator Jeff Imada must be applauded for conceiving a realistic hand to hand combat. As one stated the tempo has been more intense as there is no background music. One can hear noises of punches, furniture falling, glass breaking etc. Matt Damon's all time best fight sequence.
this reminds me of a part in the book "The Subtle Knife" by Phillip Pullman. The character Wil (he's 12), had gotten in fights because people were talking trash about his mom because she suffered from PTSD. Anyway, Wil mentioned how fighting wasn't about style, it was hurting the other person more than they were hurting you.
Awesome sound work!😍
This is an expertly filmed sequence. I love the fact that the actual fight doesn't go on for too long- the choreography makes it clear that these are two highly trained assassins desperately trying to kill each other, and it's only a short matter of time before one will prevail.
Nikki’s look at the end: “You’re my man.”
Don't think I'll ever look at a book again and think "well it is only a book". Masterfully shot scene [s].
...or a pen. Or a rolled up magazine. Or a serving platter. Aerosol hair spray cans as bombs. Paper in microwaves as timed IED's. Propane tanks as smoke bombs. Power cords. Dead body as a free-fall rescue cushion. Cooking pot. Bathroom towel.
EVERYTHING IS A WEAPON
One of the best action scenes ever
This to me is the best fight scene in the series
This is so brilliantly edited. first time i watched it, my adrenaline spiked like when i've had to fight in real life!
The first jump to balcony was best scene and great camera work 👏🏼
Fantastic movie all around. The actress playing Nicky had a super realistic traumatized look on her face. Besides the terrific acting, obviously stellar direction and camera work contributed to this amazing movie.
One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen on film.
One of the best fights in action films to this day.
But the shaky cam does get a little old after about 20 seconds
Eh, we do a lot better today to be honest, but this style was a classic.
The purpose of shaky cam is what Bourne is seeing. The main aspect of this trilogy is realism...and in a real fight you don't get the long takes and wide shots 😅....this is how frantic it gets
@@vighneshpillai7996 I mean, if they want realism, they should just hire someone to come hit us in the head during fight scenes so we can also experience the concussions Jason is dealing with.
Realism is great but I want to see what’s going on.
@@jeffn4836 😂😂😂😂.....but am I the only one who can see everything that's going on? Maybe people should watch films with more focus.
It’s done better in this film then it is in Supremacy
To think someone had to choreograph that!
Yes, but the effort and work gone into that choreography is completely lost - lost - in the hard-and-fast editing - completely negates the choreographer's work. Why do they ruin potentially great fight scenes with 'fast-cutting' and shaky-cam?
And then have it butchered in the edit.
Always loved the bourne series for its use of every day items as weapons. First movie bourne uses a pen, second he uses a rolled up magazine and in this one he uses a book and hand towel. Very common items you’ll find in any house and the way he uses them just makes it great to watch.
I remember watching the trailer to this movie when I was a kid before it come out and watching Bourne jump through the window was so cool and even now I still think it’s one of the best shots of the whole saga
Shortly after this film my friend and I got into a heated argument over something stupid. It got so bad that he took a magazine and I in turn, took a book. We looked at each other for a moment and laughed hysterically.
Lmao
Lol that's good 👍🏼

This scene is such an intense fight and that is so aggressive and vigorous! 👏👏👏
Doesnt really show it in this, maybe it's in the extended version, but I just love the bit where Desh shoves Bourne into the shower and he just starts throwing any items he can at him, including a flannel. 😁

WITH A FUCKING BOOK!
It's actually a known weapon in the combat world. The advisers for the first few bourne movies we're on point. Anything layered or stratified can be a very strong object to hit with if you know how. He does the same in Germany when he slaps the living sh out of that guy with the folded magazine. For the scene they made it just a roll up but in reality you roll it up then fold in half, you then pretty much have a hammer in your hand and you can stomp your assailant's head with it without getting hurt, trust me after a couple blows hes out just like a hammer. See the first thing you notice fighting with your bare hands, is how they aren't made to hit things all day. You need to find a way to transfer all that energy without necessarily using your knuckles. It's a bit less powerful or convenient but that what allows you to keep going instead of having a broken fist and dying.
That being said, even with all the real tricks Bourne uses, he's superhuman on every level and you kids need to remember that, its just a movie lol. Reality: When that Desh dude gave a super blow with a heavy metallic chandelier, Bourne's object would have smacked backwards into his face and then Desh would have stomped his cranium to death until it exploded. The end.
They also copied the pen fight scene in bourne identity.
i fall in love with the ending music
The best and toughest fight in the whole series and that ninja flip Desh did to untwist his arm was awesome
What stresses me out about the scene is that Bourne has too much on his plate and it heightens the anxiety. He has to evade the cops, track Desh and anticipate his moves, track Nicky, identify the building she's in, chart a route, make it to that building and intercept Desh before he gets to her. Just too much. Perfectly executed.
Also, love that dodge at 3:39.
Great fight scene. Reminded me of The Man from Nowhere, especially the ending fight scene and the drawn out/getting tired/barely able to stand up one in Atomic Blonde! :)
