Thanks for supporting me with "MartyMusic!" Which do you prefer? The Strat, or the Les Paul?
Lea paul :D
*les
Marty Music i love the sound of hamburger
*Humbucker
Les Paul, but also the Strat.
The question is which one to buy first cause you know you are going to end up with both
Music-Man very true
Speedy McGee hahaha I hope you find th best les Paul at the best price man!
The truth, but which one is best? When started playing I had an LP. Then after a few years I got a cheap Strat. A few years later I splashed out on an expensive Gibson LP. I sold that got an MIJ Strat. After a further 25 years I ended up with one of each. As of today the Strat is winning, but only until next week. So which one is best ? Only one way to find out: FIGHT!
Only if the Les Paul has single coils, cause humbuckers are the most boring sounding pickups ever.
Wish I had got strat first.
Strat has a cleaner and “cooler” sound while the les Paul has a warmer sound with more resonance.
There is no resonance at a solid body instrument that uses magnets to produce signal that is amplified and heard through an amp. It's about sustain.
The strat sounds amazing on the high frequencies but lacks lows and mids.
The LP sounds amazing on lows and mids but lacks the strat's highs.
Totally because of the single coil versus humbuckers
Stefan Edward I don’t know about that, my sg resonates pretty well. I can tell because the body vibrates at loud volumes like a hollow or semi solid
It's an electrical signal has no acoustic sound, the wood or solid body, hollow body are irrelevant.
All your hearing is electrical signal from pick up generated by string vibration.
What part of this don't you understand.
@@luismangiaterra1031 But where does the string vibration come from? What affects (and supports) that vibration? Many parts in the guitar affect it. Same goes for basses. You can literally hear the difference unplugged!! Not just amps or pickups. The raw acoustic sound. It's different. The pickups hear that too.
Or just be realistic for a second, "Epiphone vs Squier"
I’d take the sg
Squier or Fender MIM? I think the second is better, and comes at the same price point of epiphone
Both
I bought a used Samick strat from the 90s for about 170€. If I actually learn to play I'll consider something bit more premium but this one seems to hold tune at least very well.
Epiphone

I owe so much to you, Marty...now I have developed and become a shredder, but back in 2011, when I picked up the guitar(and had no clue how to play a single note on the instrument), you were the only person whose videos I used to watch...you taught me the best thing that has happened in my life...I couldn't thank you enough Marty. Thanks a heavy ton!
did you struggle learning? i am a slow learner haha i dont want to give up though. sometimes i feel really stupid when i am learning making easy mistakes sometimes i grow in confidence
mattstazza I was pretty much obsessed with guitar playing, and would spend upto 7 hours practicing. in about 6 months I was able to pull off a decent enough blues solo. from there on, I gradually worked towards more difficult stuff. keep playing dude, forget about the results. in the end, writing good songs is all that matters.
mattstazza never give up keep with it no matter how much it doesn't seemed like you improved you will. this man taught me everything I needed to know to become a decent player
True. I switched from professional jazz bass to guitar recently because I moved to a small town and drummers who will leave their house and play are zip. Bass is bliss with a great drummer. I couldn't even play a 3 chord Willie Nelson country song and let me tell you after playing hot bass solos that was soul destroying. And depressing. Well it just takes coordination which comes with practice so keep at it. Marty goes slow and precise- 95% of the other teachers online-- rush, or talk you to death. I can see why Marty has well-over a million subscribers.
mattstazza dude just watch Marty’s videos. I started with acoustic, specifically with “wish you were here” by Pink Floyd, super easy beginner song and a confidence booster
Conclusion: Get a good amp
For clean tones, I'm gonna go with the strat, but for more distorted stuff, I'm going with the les paul
The Les Paul has a slightly fatter, crunchier, harmonically richer, more complex tone. But the Strat's sharper, "coil"-ier tone is singularly epic, too. Great thing is to have both to suit your mood.
@@stevieprice-fx9bi You Just Don't Know Guitar Tones Then 😂
Complex?
@stevie price asshole
that's why the les paul was created with the humbucker so that it has that rock n roll tone that the early strats didn't have with the SC, I bought a les paul because of it.

The cool thing about guitars is that there is no problem with loving them both for different reasons. Unlike car enthusiasts, it's okay for us to say we like a wide variety of guitar shapes.
Actually Strat is easier for playing and bending because it has tremolo bridge. Hardtail strats are another story.
The answer is always the same. BOTH
Hey man I've gigged plenty of times with a 2004 American strat and the tremelo on a strat is the only thing that will make your guitar go out of tune, especially after a heavy bendy solo.

me taking Marty´s beginner lessons, stranded away to watch some end game stuff, realizing that at the moment I could not tell a difference between LP or Strat from an ironing board with 6 strings, going back to drilling the minor pentatonics. Thanks Marty, your videos really help, big time, I can´t wait to be able to talk with other people about which guitar fits better for what. ♥
As with many guitar players, I also own a Strat and Les Paul. They are obviously distinctly different sounds, but there are so many other factors, such as pickup position, guitar volume and tone, as well as the amp and settings. A good video. Thanks for sharing.
I prefer the sound and look of the Les Paul
Trabinjin main problem in guitar centers. Oh look it looks cool its probably awesome
Satan gee thanks satan
+Satan I said I prefer the sound AND the look.
I'm not supporting Satan in anyway lol but I've always found Les Pauls to be dull sounding compared to a strat. It's hard to explain but a good strat gives me a more lively, natural sound with using less gain. Could this be just crappy les pauls? I guess so but thats been my experience
Trabinjin
Been a "Les Paul guy" since the mid-eighties but allways loved the sound you can get from a strat... think I've had 5 or 6 strats that I sold. Found The Strat last year, american standard with a shawbucker. Thanks again for your great videos and have a fantastic new year! 🤘😎❤👍

After years and years, I finally saved up enough to buy a Fender Strat today to go along with my Gibson Les Paul. As the old saying goes, "At some point, you will have both" just gotta decide which one you want first, that's the hard part lol.
Something about a Les Paul that whenever I pick one up, I get a sort of 'feeling.' That 'feeling' is strictly on Les Pauls, and I don't get it when I pick up a strat, however strat's are great instruments as well! Team Les Paul! :)
Cool! Thanks for the comment Nick!
Nick Schroeter im with you les paul all the way
I like them all a lot, but if I had to choose I'd prob choose a strat, I they get me in the mood to rock 🤘
To me the Les Paul looks way cooler than the Strat but that’s personal opinion, I actually like the sound of the ales Paul more as well
Nick Schroeter I agree
Good video, the differences are explained very well. They are so very different, each to their own. Get both if you like a broad range of musical styles. I love the cleans of a Strat, pick up switching, low action, double cutaway, weight and in line tuners. I love the thick driven tones from the Les Paul, shorter scale (low tension), slim neck profile and large fretboard radius. The classic LP is heavy (aka the log or boat anchor), but lighter versions are available.
I really want electric guitar
They both sound amazing but i just like the feel of the strat personally, plus the tremelo system is fun to use
Lmao the thumbnail...
The thumbnail tho...

For me, the Strat seemed like an obvious choice when playing in the stores. The pickups were clearer, the neck more comfortable, and the tonal differences seemed more vast. Just picked up my first les paul a couple weeks ago after making that decision, and for me I love it. It sells hard rock tones so much better, it just has enough character that it makes everything feel and sound confident. I love both, and I regularly use both. But for writing and practicing I use my Paul now
The strat is faster more advanced when you learn how to burn.
I love how bright the Strat sounds. I'd be interested to see a comparison to a Telecaster

When I just started out on electric guitar, I just had to have a LP.
Now I find, that for certain songs I love, with a clean sound, you just gotta have a strat.
I tried to replicate the strats clean tone by splitting the coil on the lp's neck pick up and some adjustments
to the amp.
But it's never the same.
i love both my fender strat (mex) and Gibson Explorer equally, though i tend to use my explorer more mostly cause i play lots of rock hard rock and metal stuff and because it has rosewood which is feeling so nice, I WOULD NEVER get rid of my fender strat! i use it mostly for the blues as MArty hints at but also into more funkly soul stuff such as Red Hot Chilli peppers and even for some alternativ rock like JAck white and The White Stripes
Marty always provides his audience something great to learn or review. I own both a Les Paul Custom and a 2004 American Strat Anniversary. I almost never pick up my Les Paul anymore unless I want to play loud heavy distorted stuff and shred using the bridge pick up position. Yes, it is powerful fat balanced tone. For me the Stratocaster feels like I'm on an endless journey of finding tones and sounds that the Les Paul just can't do. With the S-1 switching and tremolo, the possibilities feel endless. No doubt the Strat hardly ever goes out of tune no matter what I do. Way more comfortable weight wise and ergonomically. Honestly, as fat as the Les Paul sounds with distortion etc., the Strat really holds it's own and I actually like how I can shape the distorted sounds more with the Strat. There was a time for me when nothing beat a Les Paul, but no longer feel that way.
magic2506 this comment is very helpful because I’m deciding on what to get so I was just wondering if on the strat can you still make it sound like a les Paul with all the distortion or is that the main difference between them
Magic2506. That's because your a more advanced player now.
Whoa. I don't think I've ever seen a test like this, where they play the same thing through both guitars. Everybody usually plays different stuff through each one so you don't get a fair comparison.
I think I like the Strat better. Didn't expect that. It's not as 'muddy' as the Gibson. More defined.
This video was made for me! I currently have a Gretsch semi-hollow as my one and only guitar and it has a killer clean tone and it's great fun to play as I learn. But I want something with a little more grit for more rock, which is what my influences are (Green Day, My Chemical Romance). Those bands both use Les Paul's so I'm inclined to get a Les Paul (plus I like the look of them way better than a Strat). The thing that's making me pause is the fact that the Strat is more versatile, which I feel night come in handy. I feel like the Les Paul might only be good for one thing and if that's the case is it worth spending all this money on one?
Let's be honest, we all saw you enjoy the Les Paul more
it's cause he spent 2k+ on it, it's the face of "you better like it, you paid a shit ton for it"
People look at their epiphones the same way baby
Yup, he is more of a Les Paul person
That strat cost more than the Les Paul I would say. Fender custom shop is not cheap.
Personaly i like the les paul because im not hitting the selector every time i strum
I always feel that the strat has a cleaner sound anyone agree?
Brock Begley Yeah this is a known fact as the strat uses single coil pick ups (cleaner sound) and les paul uses hambuckers (darker grimmier sound)

Three single coils have a lot of humming when at distortion compare to humbuckers.
My God!! Those KoT tones are just killer on both. I think I need to get on the waiting list. MAN, those were awesome tones. This vid just made me decide on getting a Les Paul Standard. Already have an American Std Strat, a Martin 000-15 acoustic, now, ordering up a Les Paul 50s Standard.

I agree with everything you say in your video, but would like to add one thing about the Strat. I have 2 of them and they both have the floating bridge and tremolo set up. I never use that function, but I prefer having a guitar with it instead of a hard tail because the routing and springs give the Strat a sort of natural small reverb chamber which is one of the things which add to the uniqueness of the Strat tone. I myself also prefer the single coil pick-ups which seem to interpret the actual feel and style of your playing more accurately than a guitar with humbuckers. To my ears, they have more "character." When listening to a great LP player, like Warren Haynes (and many others), I can tell that buckers can certainly be made to sound great, and of course it's nice to be relatively silent without the hum/buzz. I just prefer my Strat.
I love Marty and this channel! Marty is the best! Video is fantastic! This will sound like a tangent, but may help others, in no way disagreeing, with a truly great video and its intent. Many guitarists and guitar enthusiasts, which are many friends, from home enjoyment, regular gigging (pre-Covid) and some acquaintance friends, semi-retired, formerly members in Hall of Fame bands (actually one, but whatever)! A trend started to be noticed! A move away from the iconic Brand names and models. We were bitter, me too. Gibsons and Strats were being ditched in favour of truly great guitar, so well built, almost impossible to find fault in them, that sharing this trend, may be valuable for purchasers, being a Gibson/Fender owner. Guitarist we saw, were straying from what their heroes played, to these guitars, for consideration, worth it. Quality/get what you pay for/versatility! What guitars stood out, after our group input? Godin LGXT! This Canadian made guitar is flawless in quality in every way, SD pickups, outstanding bridge, piezo, can play anything, one guitar, whole cover gig, for about $1700 CDN. Everything too quality! You can’t get more value for your money! Steve Stephens, long time Billy Idol guitarist, used as #1 guitar, for a long time, did the Top Gun Theme on it and even endorsed by other companies, won’t go anywhere without it! It is, that good.
2) EBMM Silouette, with Tremolo! 24 great frets, HSH, great Dimarzio pickups, well balanced, beautiful, definitely in this price range and owning on, with a Strat style bridge, but far better...I could go things on it, that only a double locking guitar, should be able to do and getting it to go out of tune, trying, not abusing, was almost impossible! 3) Peavey Wolfgang Standard! Amazing bridge, frets, finishes, amazing Dimarzio pickups (only available on this guitar),de-tuna that works just great for drop D immediately, Birdseye maple neck, amazing machine heads, is double locking, but, will only allow “dive bombing”! Rests against guitar body in general. The craftsmanship that went into this, was off the charts, like the best of an EBMM Axis, combined with Gibson LP style finishes and real. Hartley Peavey, seeing EVH’s sig model, noting the Axis shape and Gibson LP style/quality finishes, contacted both, for approval, not wanting to rip them off. Out of respect for his integrity, permission given. Profoundly better than, now, Fender/EVH versions, by far. A favourite of many students, including GIT grads, renown school grads and pros, not for being EVH fans only, a superb guitar! I owned all of these and sold them to buy iconic guitar models...dumbest thing that I ever did! Not hating on Strats/Les Pauls, but good for thought, based on my mistakes, over 25 years, being brand bitten, over build quality, features, price point and ability to play everything, great for cover bands and pros. The Peavey Wolfgangs now, only found used, but if mint, what a gem. Somehow I just wanted to keep playing what my heroes played, but it was dumb, still loving my Les Pauls and Strats! Those vs the LGXT, Silouette with Tremolo and Peavey Wolfgang would lose every time, for quality, versatility and price. * Everything Marty said in the video is awesome! Marty is awesome! I wish someone told me this, as food for thought, not hating on Fender/Gibson!
Stellar video, as always! Off topic a bit, sorry for that, but if I saved up, having this info to start with, dreaming of Strats/Les Pauls, the best investment route, respect to Fender/Gibson, having given them a lot of cash over years, any one of those 3. Subjective! The one you love is the best! Always! Food for thought AND NOT disagreeing with Marty...this video is awesome! Marty is the man! I have no affiliation with anything I noted! All the best! Stay safe! Marty is the man! Happy playing!
I feel like Stratocasters were made popular because of the shape. But it picked up more attention when the Romantics used it in some of their music videos

I have a 1995 Fender American Standard Stratocaster and it is an absolutely beautiful guitar. It has a lovely smooth, clear tone and is great for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix stuff!
well one thing i noticed in the beginning when you were playing the differences is you had the Switch on postion 5 (neck pickup on the strat), and then you had the treble switch(bridge pickup on the Gibson. those are going to give really different sounds on top of the guitars and pickup being different also. Great video though!
My brother got a strat style guitar and I got a les paul style guitar (obviously cheaper versions). He didn't really get into music, so now I've got both kinds and I love them both.
I went to the store looking for a Strat, but came out with a LP. It's my first electric guitar, but I played acoustic before, so the shape of the LP just felt wayyyyyy better. That's all I have to say.
That's not bad for someone who's a newbie.
The lp is a very basic guitar, doesn't get more basic than that.
I also have one acoustic guitar, sun burst, looks like a $30,000 paul.
You may be the first person to ever say a les paul is a comfortable guitar to wear honestly.
That scale length though 👌
When you start on acoustic you don’t care how a guitar feels. It’s all about sound. Used to be more of a Tele guy, now I prefer a Strat. One thing is for sure: the Fender sound is the way to go.
Two awesome instruments in their own right. I have both also, each have their own tone and place. I love that color on your Les Paul !!
I totally agree with your views on the two guitars: the Fender is much cleaner, the Gibson has a fuzzy sound built in. This is mainly due to the pick-ups (single coil vs. humbucker). When I started out, the Les Paul was my total favorite. Then a friend of mine told me about the five way switch on the Strat. It introduced me to sounds that I had never heard before, which is why I did fall in love with it. I sold my Les Paul, but later bought an ES 347 in 1978, which had a switch to change polarity of the humbuckers. It has an extremely wide neck, but can produce sounds that you would normally only expect from a Fender. They are both just great guitars.
I’ve been a Strat guy for some years but I find myself shifting towards the Les Paul nowadays. I’m more of a Neil Young style guy than a Jimi Hendrix. Hard rock than blues.
I would want one of each but prefer the Les Paul.
What I have learned from your amazing video is . . . . . I need both! No more, no less . . . just both! thanks for all you do brother. We all appreciate you.
I have an Epiphone Les Paul Special ii and a Yamaha Pacifica Deluxe. And I listen to a lot of Post Hardcore rock. When I play some of the riffs that I know on my Epiphone it definitely sounds better since it’s a heavier type of music. But I’m also in love with the looks of my Yamaha and how it feels to play so I’m kinda stuck between the two. Both are still badass guitars for a beginner like myself

Great, tanks. After five years with my Mexican strat I’m now going for a Les Paul as well. Love the strat and it will always be number one, but looking for that solid, heavy feeling of a Les Paul. I play exclusively at home, so an Epiphone will have to do.
I have three Strats, and a Tele. One of my Strats, (custom built), has EMG pickups which kills the buzz and I get a fuller sound but I still want a Les Paul for the AC/DC tone. Great comparison Marty! Thanks...
You mean SG, or Gretsch
“Standing up with a strap on” oh my!!!!!
I would say, it's an endless debate, but spending time on buying or chosing a good amp is brilliant idea too! Because both of them are nothing in their place without a good amp
2:30 and 3:23 reminded me why I love the Les Paul and my SG but would kind of like to try a strat for a different style of playing and try things that I probably wouldn't on my SG, also why I might try an acoustic too?
Excellent comparison. Thanks!
I would prefer the strat but nothing beats that Gibson tone. I prefer the ESP LTD EC-1000 VB (basically a Les Paul shape, with EMG active pickups and black and gold accents)
Carlos Aponte agree. Just picked up that exact ec-1000 VB myself to replace my Gibson les Paul.

I understand the use of the SSS but I think an HSS being used in the comparison would help especially to showcase the capabilities that an HSS Strat has compared to a Les Paul.
Tele
Agreed - Tele all the way.
adamkrz59 I've been trying to get a hold of one recently too. Their so smooth
Juan Jimenez I recently bought a Made in Mexico Tele for $450 (it was on sale from $600). Amazing guitar. I love it! I'll never have another main electric. I highly recommend trying one out!
AOB I might just trade in my epiphone lp for a nice tele I saw at guitar center. If they don't screw me over that is
Juan Jimenez You should look around online a bit to see what Teles are going for. Then see what GC has their prices at for them. Again, you should be able to get good bang for your buck with a Mexican Tele. Good luck, bro!
Hell, I love the tone and look of both of them. They sound better for different styles, but can be used for everything. But generally, most people don't think of a Les Paul for something like funk
love the vids Marty! I'm a noob and trying to learn as much as possible
I agree with your assessment of both guitars. You hit the nail right on the head with both guitars. What kind of amp are you playing through?
If your Fender's neck broke, you could get it replaced, if you're les paul's neck broke, you just blew 2 grand. I prefer an epiphone tbh lol
Ethan Knudtson lol true
Or you just pay a professional to repair the break. I had a major neck break repaired in 2007 for just £45 ($57 at today's exchange rate or $88 in 2007).
Ethan Knudtson lol
that just begs the question: why the f**k are you going around breaking guitars?
Ethan Knudtson learn your facts before you speak of you steam the les Paul's glue on the neck it will come off then you can replace it quite easy and their really tuff I bang mine around hit the headstock all the time and no problems at all
Great channel and lessons ;-)
I have both, and an SG and a telecaster
And i love all 4, i play, country, bleus, metal, punk, almost every style, so maybe i need a few more guitars...?
There is no such thing as too much guitars!
The cool thing about the Les Paul is that it's an arch top so you can rest your wrist on it and really control your picking very precisely. Not so easy with a flat top. Humbuckers are nice for jazz too. I prefer single coils for my style of blues/surf rock, and you can also play some jazz tones though.
When I play a power chord on a les paul i just feel... well... powerful
Its the best Feeling ever
Fender strat 👌👌
Marty, great video. Noob question… how much does the body and weight effect the sound and sustain?
*For me.. this Gybson Les Paul Standard is absolute the ultimate guitar, i hope i will have one on this life..sound absolute briliant on metal rock songs !*
I like them both, they are gorgeous guitars 😍, but if I had to choose one that would be les paul, I love that warm sound 🔥
