      Tell me about it. Though it has to said, that buying a cool new guitar can in fact help you play better in a way, because it encourages you to play more, for a while at least, until the novelty wears off, and then you have to go buy a new one. An idea I've had recently, that I think I'm going to try out, is to buy a new guitar that I like, and then after a couple of months, once the new guitar euphoria has faded, advertise it for sale for maybe 80 to 90% of what I paid, no rush really to sell, but when it does, simply buy a new one of whatever different model I fancy trying out, and rinse and repeat. I reckon it should work out pretty well. That way you can carry on trying out cool new guitars indefinitely, always with a new awesome axe to rock. I just have to find the initial capital to get started.

      Same. I realized also the way you play both guitars seem way different to me. Just watching you tubers and pros in videos play so different depending on if it's a strat or a les Paul. Is that what's happening or am I crazy?

      Also to reply. I bought a Mexican strat because of some songs I really like that used a strat but I cannot get that thing to sound good or right. Even after setup and string swaps. I also believe it's becuase I'm not able to play the way a strat needs to be played to sound good. Also is that me or am I crazy haha . I learned and started on a les Paul if that helps..

I have a 2010 Gibson les paul studio, and looking at the specs of the Epiphone les paul traditional pro i have they are identical, same mahogany body, carved top and set neck... even the same pickups. Gibson bought epiphone in 1957 Les Paul told Gibson they needed to buy epiphone, he said because "even though he is a gibson man, he has always been an epiphone man." and Gibson listened. they maintained the quality that epiphone already built into their guitars and since 2010 Gibson has ramped up the epiphone les paul and today it is basically a Gibson les paul just a little cheaper (around 600-800 for a great one) don't count the epiphone les pauls out yet.

And I'm also more of a fan of playing more doom metal, down-tuned songs, so the Les Paul is generally has a slightly more preferred sound for that style. Though obviously kind of negligible since you can obviously still get a pretty similar sound with a Strat, especially with additional effects. That Les Paul design just never gets old lmao.

    Hi Darrell, nice video. I speak from experience and started playing guitar in 1975. My first guitar was an SG. I loved it. But like every rock guitarist/enthusiast back then who loved Led Zeppelin, I bought a Les Paul. After having a career in the US Navy, I took up guitar again and tried every style solid body and hollow body electric guitar available in Guitar Center, LP's, SG's, Teles, strats, Ibanez, Jackson, Fender, Squier, Epiphone, Gibson, PRS, Schecter, etc. The first ingredient was finding the perfect feeling neck for my left hand. Then a guitar that fit comfortably to my body without a head stock dive. Then weight and tremolo bar. Much to my surprise, teles and LP's felt like a large block of wood like a kitchen cutting board and wasn't comfortable at all. That meant only guitars with a contoured body. Hence, I settled for stratocasters because of contour body, perfect neck, and tremolo bridge assembly. They were the most comfortable and their necks were perfect in my hand - Modern "C". I settled for Fenders and Squiers. Schecter and PRS were a close second. So I sold everything else and settled on Fender strats. Also, the beauty of strats is the after market options available appears to be unlimited. What I recommend to guitarists is go to a Guitar Center store as they have a 45 day full refund grace period. So you can really test everything your heart desires without forking out and $ in the end until you actually buy one for keeps. The search for the perfect guitar is a personal journey. Also, the lower end models like Squier and Epiphone are very well made and one shouldn't feel the need to fork out $3000-5000 for a Gibson Les Paul unless you absolutely must have it. I have several Fender strats and my favorite playing and sounding strat is a Squier Standard which they don't make anymore. Who knew? Forget the name on the headstock, put the ego aside and try everything.

    Learned and played on a Strat for 6 years then transitioned to a Les Paul just recently. I have rather weak and small hands so even after building up strength in my left hand for years the long scale length of the Strat just wasnt ideal for me especially in longer sessions especially since I was also switching from a rhythm player to a full time lead player, but was still a great workhorse guitar. All that strength build up from the Strat did wonders for me when I transitioned to a Les Paul. With the shorter scale I was able to vibrato, bend and overall play my techniques like never before.
    Having both is really handy when you're a regularly writing and recording like myself but if you want my take, I say go for the Strat if you want to be more of a rhythmic player playing a lot of chords, strumming and funky songs and if you have the finger strength unlike myself you can very much play lead on it. If you want to have more control over the fingerboard and play more expressively (minus the whammy bar) then I say go for the Les Paul.
    Either one is great but it all boils down to what you want to play on and which guitar fits the budget better.

    everyone says LP has "fuller" sound.
    but does anyone else think the clarity of higher frequencies in the strat makes it technically "fuller"? To me the strat just sounds more like a guitar

    • @ItsRyan265
      @ItsRyan265 Před 4 lety +5

      I wouldn't call it "fuller." It's because of the clarity of those higher frequencies that it serves well in cutting through the mix. I do believe though that it is a better soloing instrument since it is much more articulate.

    • @brainer5457
      @brainer5457 Před 4 lety +18

      It's actually more like this:
      LP: Thick and Heavy
      Strat: Thin and Clean

    • @nocaptainmatt3771
      @nocaptainmatt3771 Před 4 lety +1

      @@brainer5457 that's my conclusion

    • @erikvelasco7718
      @erikvelasco7718 Před 3 lety +5

      When people say it’s “fuller” they’re talking about how the humbucker gives a lot of mids, which enhances the presence of most audible notes to the human ear, that’s why the sound feels thicker. The Strat’s single coils cannot give all those mids, they focus on brighter notes, however that also makes it a naturally better guitar for lead playing and blues (as Hendrix himself proved it to be).

    The Les Paul sounds warmer, a fatter sound. The Strat sounds more precise, very pure tone without the same depth as the Les Paul.

    • @davidyellowstar4910
      @davidyellowstar4910 Před 5 lety

      Yes Strat is very clear, and precise is a great word, it's not for 'sloppy live' playing. (Don't mix with alcohol haha) (i.e. Jimi Page was a Gibson guy)''

    • @puckf17
      @puckf17 Před 3 lety +1

      I was listening to the difference between the Strat and the Telecaster and found a similar difference. The Tele was warmer and richer, the Strat by comparison was more shrill but sounded great for shreds- rapid passages.. I read that EddieVanHalen had similar issues and resolved the problem with the LesPaul/Strat-Frankenstein.

    • @rayhoodoo847
      @rayhoodoo847 Před 7 lety

      I got a HSS strat with humbucker at bridge, but I actually wish I would have gotten humbucker in the middle instead to keep that iconic strat single coil bridge sound. But I play in the neck pickup 90% of time anyways

    • @rayhoodoo847
      @rayhoodoo847 Před 7 lety +3

      it's definitely not "much better", it just depends on the tone you want to achieve. Listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California, the chorus is power chords on strat, seems pretty heavy and powerful to me. anyhow, John Frusciante uses distortion in most of his solos with single coils, sounds epic!

    I own them both and i like them both depending on the style i want to play. Both of my guitars have their history. They were not always like they are today, I first had to figure out what i like and what i don't and what parts have what influence on the tone. So, hardware and pickups were changed during the years. On the Strat even the neck was replaced. Today i have two guitars that i absolutely love. Interestingly the first love changes from time to time from on to the other instrument. Originally i was a Les Paul guy although my first electric was a Levinson Blade Strat. The older i got the more i started to apprechiate the Strat again, although this time the Fender Strat.

    This is an excellent video. I'm really glad you showed several types of music that brought out how each shined in different situations. Price vs sound, I think I'd be happy with the epi over the Gibson, but the fender really was much nicer sounding than the squier. Of course, now I want one of each...

  • @ong2220

    I think using a strat with humbuckers and single coils are the best. Like the Yamaha Pacifica. Because You can play pretty much anything on it for a low price. It’s amazing for beginners like me. Because you can play blues and jazz, but also high gain metal with the comfortable shape of a strat.

      I actually found a happy medium with a 2014 Fender FRS Hot Rod Strat. It's got the feel I like and it came with a DiMarzio PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge. Plus, I scored it as a store demo for under $400 with a bag.
