    I dont know if you actually care about region boundaries in Starfield, but different planets/moons have differents sizes. Ive found one moon so small you could land on one landing point with abandoned facility nearby, then land not very close to it relatively and still be able to see the exact facility from the first landing point and even reach it. Most of their employees have been around since Morrowind, Oblivion, and many of the Daggerfall devs still work there. NMS did not allow you to fly close to the ground in year 1. By Year 2 you could fly through the mountains and crash if you wanted to, and vehicles were added. This video, shows that the pixels are connected, hopefully on every world, so being able to travel around the planet if you want should be possible.... with some programming imagination. My hypothesis for the invisible barriers is that it's also due to the "hairy ball," theorem. Their engine could only handle loading square tiles, so they couldn't handle a player traveling vertically from pole to pole without a serious overhaul, and therefore just disabled it. Much easier to remap the players landing zone from spherical to Cartesian coordinates than it would be to handle things like 3D collision bounds and terrain data in non-euclidean space.

      It's not actually more work to do it this way though. All such types of procedural generation are deterministic, so as long as you pass in the same starting parameters (seed) you get the same result. For a planet in Starfield you assume the seed is the coordinate you land on, and thus you'll always get a consistent and deterministic planet surface back whether you land in the same spot over and over or in neighboring spots.

  • @kishaloyb.7937

    The reason why the game crashes when you go too much beyond the invisible boundary is because the more you go further away from your ship, the more terrain data the game loads that is in front of the player, and unloads the terrain data which is behind the player. A time comes when the player just moves too far away from his/her ship, that the player ship itself gets unloaded with the terrain data, hence the game crash.
    There are 2 ways to solve this issue. Either we somehow prevent the ship from getting unloaded with the terrain data, when the player move to far away from the ship. Or make a script where we can call the ship to the players current position, so the ship always stays in the vicinity of the player, hence the game doesn't crash during extended planetary exploration.

    It feels like they’re so close, but where they’ve stopped short has such a massive impact. It’s not about the ability to walk around a planet over the course of a month. It’s about not being able to get in your ship and fly over to a cool landmark in 30 seconds, or boost from a planet to its nearby moon. The segmentation just makes my ship not feel real, the planets don’t feel real. The seamlessness is so integral to an experience that’s supposed to be about exploration

      Writing is fine, nothing to write home about. I already expressed my issue with the segmentation, which leads to all the fast travelling idk why you’re bringing it up as a point against me. The environments, specifically the procedural planet surfaces not the hand made stuff, are as barren as they should be. Again, the problem is the content is hundreds of metres apart and you just have to hold w for a couple minutes to get between them, if you could hop in your ship and zoom there in a few seconds it would be fine. Then the surface could just do its real job of being resource gathering zones where you scan stuff to see what you can harvest then build a little outpost to do it, a gameplay loop I enjoy.

    Knowing that they actually can accurately generate any spot on the map, it's a real bummer that they don't let you travel across the whole planet. The only reason you can't is probably because of engine limitations, it seems like the engine still can't dynamically load and unload areas, since they also still need to have loading screens when entering a building, so they can only load part of the planet surface at a time. It's unfortunate because they were so close to actually being able to explore the planet surface, and they could have implemented vehicles or the ability to fly your ship on the planet to traverse the distances, and probably generate more actually interesting stuff like settlements along the way, but this ancient engine kept them from realising the vision. This game has so much unused potential.

    The situation is that they're just generating a 2D heightmap world, but you cannot fit a 2D heightmap world onto a sphere. You must resort to one of the many projections that exist, all of which result in distortion. They'd have to distort the actual 3D landscape to fit the sphere if it were going to truly match what you see on the spherical planet. I don't know what projection they're using to map biomes onto planets, it could be some kind of icosahedron based method, or maybe even as simple as octahedral, but at the end of the day they're just generating the landscapes as 2D heightmaps from the biome data that exists where you click on the planet, and there's no true contiguous tiling of these heightmaps to form a spherical planet. A game like No Man's Sky doesn't generate 2D sections of landscape, they went ahead and actually implemented a way to generate a spherical landscape which is why you can actually fly off of and onto planets you encounter in space. While there's still a "seam" between the space traveling presentation of planets, and the landscape you see when you've entered the atmosphere, it's definitely not the situation Starfield suffers from - just generating 2D heightmap landscapes based on a position you click on a planet.

  • @shortrefmegaref
    @shortrefmegaref Před 8 měsíci +2

    I'm not sure it's because of the hairy ball theorem, but rather that there is no homeomorphism from the plane to the sphere, because the sphere is compact and the plane is not (homeomorphisms preserve "compactness").
    The hairy ball theorem is more for stuff dealing with a plane of vectors.

    • @xHF01x
      @xHF01x Před 8 měsíci +4

      The problem here is not compactness, as the map is hopefully finite in size (i.e. it's bounded, and we might as well assume it's a closed subset of the plane). The problem is that the map is flat (i.e. has zero curvature), but it's trying to be a map of a globe (which has positive curvature). But by the Theorema Egregium, (Gaussian) curvature is preserved under local isometries -- so such a map cannot be a local isometry, i.e. it must warp distances.

    Cannot believe that having a landscape generator capable to generate continuous landscape over multiple tiles, then didn't implement the simplest hack with teleportation. When the player reaches any border that is 4 km away from zero coordinate, game pauses, everything (map, player, NPCs, POIs) moves 4 km back from the border, farthest half of the map unloades, closest half of the map generates, and game continues. If to pre-generate closest half of the map ahead of time, then the transition would be barely noticeable.
