The Volkswagen Golf GTI is arguably the most established performance car in South Africa but this hasn't stopped the likes of Hyundai coming for the crown. Bearing the same drivetrain and platform of the i30 N is the Hyundai Kona N. It's time to see how the newcomer squares-off against the long-standing champion in a quarter-mile drag race.

Wasnt in N mode.. didnt use the track shift feature and more importantly, he didnt use NGS for extra boost. I have the kona N and this video didnt do it justice.
Agree, wasn’t in N mode and not in launch control, or NGS. I own the Kona N it’s fantastic.
You don't know any of that from this short ass video that shows zero of his inputs. The Kona barely won with more HP and better tires.
How does the NGS work as far as timing it? if you're in a drag race do press it before? Right as you launch?
@@capblueberry you can use it whenever you want I like to put it on with launch control. So ESC off, N mode on, Launch control, Ngs, then launch.
Yes it can be applied even at a stand still once the engine is ready .. however unless mine is different.. my ngs automatically kicks it into manual I have to use the paddle shifters or knob. To shift into next gear... It won't stay in automatic for me.
Was the guy in the Kona asleep? Where was the launch control and N mode? 🤦🏻♂️
The Modes do make a huge difference in the Kona N. I own one and sport and N mode very different throttle response. I put my Kona N on a dyno and got 270hp at the wheels. I have been very impressed with it.
The crossover won the race over a hatchback even without launch control. The end.
It’s not even a crossover. It’s even shorter and smaller than the GTI. Absolutely absurd that they call that a crossover. It isn’t.
😆😅🤣 The gti lost against a that.
@@0672abby it was pulling on it in the end and it supposedly has 40 fewer horsepower.
@@devn3813 The VW is also 100 kg lighter than the Kona and for those Americans on here thats 220 lbs.
@@vroomgc yes, the Elantra N is about the same weigh and is putting down about 270 wheel hp stock with the dct
Was the Kona in eco mode? Try using N mode, launch control & NGS... it will be an embarrassment.
Also, if you have a track available, try doing some lap times too.
Mate it was in N mode lol, 280 hp isn’t fast to start off with..
@@bobjane2704 I highly doubt it. Couldn't hear any rev bouncing from the Launch mode (so can only assume they didn't use it), and didn't hear any DSG farts from the gear shifts (so can only assume the exhaust flap wasn't open, which is default open in N mode).
You're just mad VW with 228 does just as good as Hyundai 280 hahahah
He is in N custom mode, you can tell by the piped in tcr sound. I own an Elantra N, that’s how I know this btw. There is an argument to be made here that there is a noticeable power difference between full N and N custom depending on the settings he chose
@@milliemone It's 241 hp and vw numbers are to the wheels Hyundai is not. They are close in hp.
The Kona wasn't even in N mode. Launch control was not activated .. no NGS .. hm .. if you compare these 2 cars, you should compare them correctly ..
lol when make a Drag Race then make it right or let it be Come On !! Kona N not in N Mode no NGS no LC no Powershift activated 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂ I Own a Kona N Performance , and Kona N Performance 2021 /2022 inofficialy have more Power than a i30 N Performance 2021 Model ..to be Clear : Kona N Performance do have 305 HP and 417 Nm of Torque !! But Hyundai don't nail that officially ,cause no one would buy still a i30 N / I20 N Model .
Kinda sad for VW. It's cheaper than the GTI, has 3x the warranty and more cargo volume. If he put it in N Mode, with the NGS button, and launch control the Kona would've been gone 😂 I'm sure they didn't do that to make it a close race.
The GTI starts at 30K.
@@oemj7147 but that's not how much they actually go for
Actually the kona n is more expensive (Canadian pricing) and has less cargo capacity.
@dobbeltskydespil The only thing they did to get me to buy it was give me a 10 year warranty. I know VW GTIs aren't great bud. Anyone I know with a VW admits to serious issues. I can beat on my car knowing if it breaks it's ight. Warranty
@dobbeltskydespil I see you have something seriously against Hyundai. I mean it's whatever. Just be glad it's not your car. I'm not owning it for 10 years considering I paid it off in 3 months. It doesn't matter. All cars are cool.
0-60 in 6.4 seconds? A manual tested in poor conditions at high altitude maybe. But a GTI WITH a DCT have been running 0-60 in the mid to low five second range even with the MK7. The most recent testing data of the MK8 GTI (again with a DCT) is doing 0-60 in the low five second range with a mid to high thirteen second quarter mile. Basically very similar times to the Kona N. So the fact that these two are very close in a drag race is actually not surprising tp anyone that takes a minute to look up test data.
The Kona has a bit more power but it also weighs more and a higher drag coefficient, those two factors virtually cancel out the difference in power output. Especially at higher speed drag coefficient makes a big difference on acceleration, which is why the GTI started coming back near the end. When you look at the specs and other independent test data, the results of this race are not surprising.
Kona has a decent drag coefficient actually. So far i havent seen a mk8 gti dsg in the 13's.. dont know whats going on with them but im sure a propre tune will fix this
Mk7 gti's are not running mid to low 5 sec. They are in the upper 5 seconds close to 6.
@@vroomgc Car and Driver 2015 GTI DSG 0-60 5.6 seconds, the 5.9 secondswas for their long term manual. Look it up yourself if you don't believe me. And the MK8 is even quicker so...
@@davidpaulin Not sure where you have been looking, Car and Driver claims they got 0-60 in 5.1 1/4 in 13.6 @105 MPH and Motor trend claims 0-60 in 5.4 and 1/4 mile 13.9 @104
Dyno and drag strip testing in the USA at least seem to indicate VW was very conservative with power and performance specs.
Look you all saw the side by side race, it was very close. All I am saying is based on the instrumented testing, this race result should not surprise anyone. Just pointing out facts here.
@@ericmichel3857 Ok thanks now go look up the real youtube videos of guys running their gti's and doing 0-60 times on regular streets. Some are high 5's and some are into the 6's. btw I drive a Golf for the past 6 year so you dont have to try and school me
Who cares who wins, Kona N is a beast and a much better cabin to be in on long journeys.
Lol no it's not.... The GTI has way better NVH and more comfortable
GTI is so boring, no wow factor, easily mistaken for a 1.9 diesel 🤣
@@stevemarshall3481 the GTI, the hot-hatchback with 48 years of history and production is more boring than the ugly sport-suv abomination from a company known for its economy cars. Lol ok, in other news did you take your meds today?
It showed him in sport mode. Three things seems to be missing. N mode for car to run it's best. Launch control. It would have jumped off the line. And n grin shift after launching. I don't think the driver knew the car well.
it did engage launch control. you see the car lurch slightly when it shows the interior before the start of the race. you also hear the revving
@@shijima_ending not what the Kona N launch control sounds like at all. It's extremely distinctive. Also does not seem to be in N mode
@@shijima_endingthe Kona N launch control makes a sound you can’t replicate any other way in the car. It’s like a burbling two-step that sits at 2800 rpm. This guy royally f’d up the run.
Actually. Now I am thinking they intentionally didn't use all these features to make it a "close race". When the GTI starting gaining all he had to do was press the BIG Red button on the steering wheel. But he didn't.
Did the Kona use launch control and NGS?
Of course no
no launch control, you can't hear any revving
@@telelaci2 you can hear revving. you can also see the car lurch when it shows the interior right before the start of the race
@@shijima_ending Maybe you donno how the launch control sounds in a Hyundai N car. And you can't hear any revving at all.
2021 VW Golf GTI Mk VIII 0-100 kph 6.3 seconds
2021 Hyundai Kona N DCT 0-100 kph 5.5 seconds with launch control
2021 Hyundai Kona N DCT 0-100 kph 6.0 seconds w/o launch control
And what you see on the picture: Kona has no chance at the launch.
In the reality VW has no chance, it's almost a second difference, not a little. Kona has no lauch control revving, that sounds like crazy engine gunning.
@@telelaci2 well you see the car lurch like every car's launch control so I dunno what to tell you haha. and the MK8 gti can do a sub 6 0-60 with the DSG. Germans sleep numbers, do you not know this already?
nice videograph!! :)
so after searching around these GTIs make around 239-245 Whp stock, which is way more than the advertised 241chp now this makes more sense
Yooo again 🤣 just raced a golf GTi, 20 plate, on they way home tonight. This video is BS, I overtook the GTi at 120 and even from a dig I caught up with no problems.
The GTi driver was insanely suprsied, he asked me if it was AWD.
When I responded no, he was like that car is fuckin rapid.
So glad I brought my Kona N, underrated and understated.
The N didn’t use launch control NGS or was even in its sportiest mode. The 0-60 times are almost 1 sec between the two. The Elantra N rips the Jetta and GTI apart for lunch. You’d need a Golf R to compete. The one with awd and over 300hp but is 10k more than the N
@40 Roller Promise you I'm not, whatever you take of I that is up to you, and why woudnt the Kona be faster in a straight line ? Has more horses
@@irockz9723 A 2015 gti with manual and all season tires?
By my calculations, it took them about 52 seconds to do the quarter mile.
letsgooo 🔥🔥
Put the Kona in N mode yah nuffy!!! Or even engage NGS 🤦♂️🤦♂️
N 🔥💪🏽👌🏻
this makes no sense lol unless the gti was underrated.,.... the Kona is 3340 lbs gti is 3190 lbs idk why they didn't atleast use ngs... anyways this makes me wonder how the clubsport vs a type R would look like
GTI absolutely is underrated, I think the video may have been posted after your comment but it dyno's at 245/300 at the wheels while advertised as 241/276 at the crank, lol... but this is very common in German cars, even my base Golf (when it was stock) is advertised 170/184 at the crank and it's 165/200 at the wheels.
Clubsport smacks the type R they already raced them on another channel. In fact the New GTI is doing the same time as the TYPE R in the quarter mile
현대 코나N 자랑스럽습니다...
People in here bitching that he didn’t hit the NSG like it’s some kind of NOS. It ads extra what 10hp. It’s not going to make a difference. Lol. The Kona and it’s system is just better at launching then the GTi.
Proud Nthusiast here 👋
The last time I checked in SA had the Kona N-Line, Didn’t realize that Hyundai has broad the full on “N”? Has been launched already?
The Kona N is my daily. It’s a great enthusiast car for $35k. I’ve owned Mercedes AMG, VW GTI, Mini JCW, Mazdaspeed3 and the Kona is the most practical and fun car of the bunch.
Good to here. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on buying one. Doing a test drive this weekend.
@@vroomgc let me know how you like it. Make sure to test out the drive modes, and adjust the settings how you like them.
@@vroomgc straight N mode rides pretty stiff which is great for well maintained rides but not crap rides. Luckily can adjust suspension while keeping everything else in N mode
@@mtDNA_Refresh Yes I have seen that on the videos I have watched and my current car has adaptive suspension so I know how a stiff ride can be but will be interesting to see how bouncy the ride is.
@@vroomgc my previous reply was supposed to say rodes not rides. But I think you got it. And yea the softest setting is good for me but I still know that is subjective. 👍
The kona will only shift out of first gear when in N mode. This guy hit sport and called it a day, it's on video
they both make the same power to the wheels. the gti;s power on their website is to the wheels. Look at any dyno for them. ALSO.. the kona is old k2 platform. the elantra n has the new updated turbo etc and new k3 platform. both did great imo
The Kona N has the same turbo as Elantra N but is on older platform. The Kona N and Elantra N DCT on same dyno made same WHP but the Kona made slightly more wheel torque which was interesting
@@mtDNA_Refresh there is a difference at acceleration after 100km/h elantra n 0km-200km is 19 sec
No, the Kona and Elantra engines are the same. You’ve got it wrong.
GTI in my area are 43k--paid 35k for my Kona N.
Thanks for this test. But c'mon. One race? And no times posted? Didn't say if launch control was used? NGS?

So am I mistaken or is the fact that the GTI was able to keep up with the Hyundai that had 35 more HP & 16 more FPQ a good thing?
Imagine if the Kona N went up against a Clubsport GTI. Hyundai’s halo vehicle barely beating a standard GTI. 😬
Kona N weights 250lbs more than a veloster N and also everyone knows that the VW has been underrating their power figures since mk7.
@@Boostlagg Hyundai also could have overrated the Kona. They did that before with the old Veloster.
@@vr6gls nice try the i30 N DCT is already as fast as the expensive more powerful mk8 gti club sport
I think driver error.
spelling mistake Hyundai not Hyandai
Idk the GTI still isn’t a slow vehicle.
Hahaha who’s cares.. the Kona n wins by 3-4 feet lol.. I can see if it’s about 15 car lengths behind.. in that case you would probably need and rs3 lol.. but so tiny the difference
I swear it’s like they let off on the Kona n on the launch just to make it a close race.
Owning one even in sport it jumps off the line.
Since they get lended the car they don’t want to make the VW brand look bad.
The point is to drive realistically, it makes the VW look bad and loses the race who cares people will still buy what they like.
But trying to make these cars look even is fallacy and some poor guy is gone run against a Kona N and it will not be like this video even in sport mode 😂
The GTI dsg is not 0-60 in 6.4. At the strip and in online print/video publications it consistently runs 5.5 sec to 60 mph and putting down 232hp to as high as 245hp to the wheels in completely stock form. Not sure if there is a European and North American spec difference on the Kona N (I don't recall seeing one) but they have been raced against each other numerous times here in the States and Canada and they're either dead even or the GTI edges ahead. Not surprised by this video at all.
kona n?!
Lols.. DSG gti gear1 to 2 really takes time .. gti could've caught and pass
So will Christmas boet.
Kona overrated?
GTI underrated?
Both?
the kona was in sport mode. yall really think N mode would have been any better? and yes it engaged launch control. right before the start of the race, when it shows the kona interior, you can see the car lurch forward slightly.
Yes the N mode would have been better I have a Kona N. And im not convinced that was launch control. This whole video is kinda just ridiculous bc how are they not going to say or explain anything they are doing in this race. Makes everybody just assume which is dumb
Where is the little beast TOYOTA GR ❤YARIS❤
driver cannot drive an N and site cannot even spell lolol
I wanna see the Troc R against the KONA N
If the baseline GTI was pulling on the N, then the TROC R will smack it
@@glistud8178 I would reckon so. It’d still be interesting to see the Kona vs Troc R battle it out. I’d say Troc R would smash it tho
@@tttropicano6720 yeah there won’t be much of a battle. The 0-60, quartermile, and trap speed of the Troc is on another level, it’s like bringing the Golf R to race the Kona ITLL just get smashed
The new GTI hits 0-60 in the low 5's and hits the quarter mile in about 13.5sec. These two cars are very comparable.
Blah blah blah… let’s see how Kona’s stack up to GTIs when it comes time to re-sale … Hyundai is doing some great stuff with this N line but still have a ways to go when it comes to actual market value over brands like VW and Honda… just saying… N grin away
You can buy GTI for MSRP or even under while N models are sold with high markup. That tells me resale value of N models won't depreciate as much. Im talking about N models only

AWD and 45 more HP for Kona N and barely scraped by… good race tho. Would like to see roll race and how the mid range is on the Kona. Kudos to Hyundai
