Fun fact: The RoboCop suit (1987) was so hot and heavy that Peter Weller was losing 3 lbs a day from water loss. Eventually, an air conditioner was installed in the suit.

Love it. I came here after binge watching the original Robocop Trilogy. I only watched them before when I was younger in the 90's. Can't believe Robocop movies were so brutal even back then, and the practical effects are so realistic...even in 2022.
The suit is also still high tech looking. They made this ahead of it's time for sure.

Recently, I have re-watched all of RoboCop from 1987 to 2014, and even with me being an apologist, getting through Alpha Commando was Beyond painful.

Peter Weller nailed the role in an instant classic, Verhoeven's style of direction still always fresh. I think the clash between Robocop and RoboKane (Robocop 2) in a one-step motion still a better work than the cgi of today, thanks to Tippet.

Fan theory: the cartoon shows are examples of 'a show within a show'. The cartoons are created by OCP to profit off of Robo's marketing potential and act as a PR piece, and are shown on TV in the canon universe. The profits from the cartoons and merchandise offset Robo's significant operating costs.
Ed Neumeier had written a draft script for Robocop 2: Corporate Wars in which Robocop was blown to bits and resurrected in the future. The script was ultimately rejected by the studio. Verhoeven had no intention of directing a sequel because filming Robocop had been a miserable experience, Neumeier meanwhile was focused on writing a script for Oliver Stone for a movie which never got made, and a writers strike dismantled efforts to make the sequel.
Robocop 2 would be written primarily by comic book artist Frank Miller who had done the Robocop Comic books. He is most well known for The Dark Knight Returns the story credited with rebooting Batman as a gritty and dark super hero in the 80s. The Dark Knight returns shared a lot of things in common with Robocop including the news broadcasts, humor, and political commentary on the Reagan era so it was an ideal match. But Miller was in way over his head having never written a movie before and the studio Orion who were normally known for being very 'hands off' were far more involved in the sequel. This is why the tone of the movie is different, the humor is different, and a lot TV bits and political commentary are missing.
The Robocop TV series pilot was based on the rejected script for Robocop 2, mainly the story about Robo's new friend and ally Diana an OCP secretary that is murdered so that her brain can be used for the central computer that runs Delta City. Like Robo she keeps her soul and manifests as a Ghost in the Machine within the computer system.
The show was filmed in Canada to lower costs, and various weird rights issues forced them to change certain characters like Officer Anne Lewis becoming Officer Lisa Madigan.
While well intentioned and arguably underrated the series was panned at its time for its low budget, cheesy story lines, and lack of violence Robocop was known for.
The series suffered from extensive censorship in part from protests against violence on TV that were common at the time. As a result Robocop never gets to fire his gun in anger once in the entire series run and has to resort to a series of less-than-lethal weapons to take down bad guys. This itself was the writers poking fun at their predicament and political commentary on the whole situation of violence on TV and censorship and Robo is programed with a violence-o-meter that forces him to use non-lethal force whenever possible. He is shown trying to select lethal force constantly but the programming doesn't allow it.
Robocop 3 was again penned by Miller but including a number of more fanciful elements like Cyborg Ninjas, an evil Japanese Corporation trying to buy OCP, and a Robo having a jet pack. The studio wanted to tone down the violence significantly because Robocop was now considered a kids movie. Few of the original actors returned, and they introduced new characters including an orphan girl/hacker that probably inspired the Gadget character in the TV series. While there is political commentary on outsourcing and Corporate mergers, the movie falls flat and loses site entirely of what made Robocop good in the first place. Even the addition of Rip Torn as the new OCP CEO couldn't save this movie...
Peter Weller couldn't reprise his role as Robocop because he was in Naked Lunch and at this point probably didn't want to be involved anymore. Richard Eden who played Robo in the TV series was approached but was ultimately rejected for the role, resulting in Robert Burke being cast. Both Burke and Eden to their credit studied the films intensely to duplicate Peter Wellers unique style of movement within the suit.
Prime Directives was created in part because the studio responsible for the TV series still had the rights and didn't want to let them expire. Once again filmed in Canada on a low budget the series re-uses many of the props and costumes that had been used in the TV series. With an all new cast the 4-part series takes place 10 years after the original and talks about how Robocops hardware is becoming obsolete and he must face a new Robocop created from John T Cable Murphy's original partner before Lewis. The series was ok, had a number of fanciful elements and cyber-punk elements to it, but lack much of what made the original great. The show was also notable for its use of numerous well known 'generic Canadian sci-fi actors'
That's really funny to say that Pete Weller didn't want to be involved with Robocop anymore. I mean if that were True, he wouldn't have reprised his iconic role for Mortal Kombat 11 and Robocop: Rogue City. 🙄
