  • This isn't my first experience travelling in Canada where problems are vast when it comes to accessibility. I've run into barriers in so called "accessible" places all over this country because there are no rules, no governing body and no one is reprimanded if they don't do it right...
We talk about being more inclusive and accepting of everyone yet most people forget about those with disabilities. People either have a disability or are aging into one, no one is immune. If people could grasp this concept the world would be a better place for everyone.

This is the first time I have watched one your videos. I have been in a chair for 45 years. I don’t get around as well as used to. I’ve run into all these problems. They also have most of the beds too damn high for someone who has trouble lifting themselves up high.
Last time we stayed out of town the bed was about 10” higher than my chair. I can’t lift myself that high anymore, I have arthritis. Shoulders aren’t what they were when I was 21 years old. Luckily they had a good man in maintenance and he made something that could work. Thank God for smart people

In the U. S. I have never seen two "ADA" rooms that are alike. Sinks too high to use, beds too high to get into. Doorways too narrow, bathrooms inaccessible. These rooms are typically dirtier, smellier, & I'm talking cigarette smoke stinky. The beds are worn out and these rooms are often in the noisiest part of hotels. I have found opting for a large 2 queensize bed hotel room often is the best option. I bring a spare folding wheelchair to put in the shower that I don't care if it gets wet. I applaud you calling them out. And I empathize with your frustration. Been there.

You're so kind to bring your extra chair. If they don't have one in the shower for me I will sometimes drag the office chair into the shower, doesn't matter if it is upholstered fabric. lol the vindictive side of me shines in these moments

This was painful and irritating to watch. When the ADA laws came into effect in the US I was working as a Director of Loss Prevention for a major hotel chain located in Minnesota. At days end I went to the front desk and checked into an ADA room, even though able bodied. The purpose was to see if our housekeeping department was compliant. I encountered pretty much everything you did. Drapery rods to high, providing you could get to them as a chair was in the way. Door knobs you couldn't open with a closed fist, towel shelves placed to high, shower head left in the high position, door peepholes had only one high peephole instead of one high and one low. Drain and water pipes not insulated, shower entry ramp instead of a threshold with a lip. etc. After some tactful, well maybe not so much, we retrained our staff, then did spot checks. Also spent a ton of money making the elevators compliant with lower buttons, Front Desk compliant with one station lowered to comply with ADA and so forth. Surprisingly, we actually picked up conventions and travelers with disabilities. A win/win for all. No excuse for what you encountered.

My dad has been in a wheel chair since i was 2, so for the last 48 years this coming August. He ran his own business for more years then he cares to count in the state of Oregon. He helped write and pass a number of ADA Bills into Law. My dad would do the ADA compliance evaluation for the college campus, Architect's would contact him to go over new plans to make sure they where complaint. Plus he also built living environments and ramps for leople in chairs. I walk into a building and I look to see if they are accessible for my dad.

Wowwwwwww. That was impressive how dysfunctional this room was for you. Since by family is only 2 year into having my dad being disabled. This best accessible room was at a Hampton inn in Georgia. It had, lowered bed height, lowered peep hole, plenty of space around furniture, handles to reach the curtains, a shower chair just like we had at home, reachable towel rack and hook. I was so impressed. However the worst place I have been to was a private college campus in Oklahoma. It was built in the 60s but had wonky wheelchair lifts and locked elevators and tiny hallways to some elevators. Door buttons that never worked. Steep, broken concrete sidewalks that were often soaked with sprinklers pointed at the sidewalks.

Those are very good points, I hope the hotel chains get word of this video and make the right changes. I’ve been in a chair 33 years and in the 80’s the ADA was not followed AT ALL! The newer hotels hired abled bodied consultants to design the hotels which makes no since at all, and the inspectors were just checking off boxes. My experience has been to ask when the hotel was built because if it wasn’t built after 2000 you can guarantee it will be a challenge to stay there. Keep up the good fight, and stay positive, a negative attitude is toxic and a negative attitude in a chair is doubled.

Thanks for your video. I have been in a wheelchair for over 50 years ,( Vietnam 1968 ) T-12 L-1. I am 76 years old and still drive my own car and do all the transferring myself. Hotel rooms for the handicap are an absolute joke. My main concern is the height of the beds mattress. When I was younger I had no major problems transferring on and around things with hotels and that was long before the ADA came along. The ADA is a joke too. One thing that hotels do is give you a handicap room on say, the 4th floor. The room is 200 feet or more from the elevator. All carpet flooring which is like pushing a wheelchair through sand. All in all I don't have a lot of years left so my concern isn't as desperate as yours. I sure like to drive Americas backroads and if I have to I'll sleep in my car.

Most of the time I’m just happy to be able to somewhat move my chair. Most accessible rooms have beds and counters to high and narrow bathrooms with impossible toilet gymnastics , showers that need a 20 point turn to get back out, many times with the roll in showers the only place to leave your wheelchair will give you a wet cushion and backrest to sit in all day unless you build a mountain of towels, or butt scoot across a hard tile floor and begin the fun task of getting back in a wheelchair from the floor, (I’m a high level para very hard for me ) c’mon guys all the work put into useless stuff when you could have down way simpler. Just look at the room from the height of a wheelchair or better yet ask somebody!

One time we got a "wheelchair room" and one of the beds blocks most of the bathroom door, it's not just a fire hazard , it's not acceptable for someone in a wheelchair to access the bathroom. They need to have the furniture in mind when designing not just fixtures and architecture.

I’ve been a paraplegic since I was 8, Blows my mind that no matter how accessible a hotel is, they can’t seem to make a bed low enough to get into from my wheelchair. I typically have to use the night stand or bring another chair to use as a half way point. Like was at a hotel in LA and they thought of soooo many things trying to make it accessible but, they missed the fact that the bed is almost over my head. How do you think of so many little things and miss the giant bed? Seems like the must obvious thing but NOBODY ever has a lowered bed.

Hi there. I’m so glad you shared these videos. I am in Nova Scotia canada and I travel for medical apts to Halifax. Finding a true accessible room is close to impossible and it’s so frustrating. That shower bench girl….cringe!! I’m also a larger girl than you, so I wouldn’t be able to get half a cheek on it. I was impressed you managed to grab the shower head, but I’ve been in hotels where the shower bar had the sprayer on top and I’d actually have to call the office to get someone to come up to bring it down….so sad. If you are in Halifax the Chateau Bedford is not fancy, but offers the best accessible rooms I’ve found so far😉. Hubby and I just bought a king bed that is adjustable and I’m not sure if you are like me and get spasms when the bed moves (like when hubby turns in his sleep), but I have to say the two twin mattresses together that make the king adjustable bed is perfect for us! I’ve been getting much better sleeps, and love being able to adjust the elevation, even if it’s for reading or having a tea in bed❤️. Glad I found you, cause it’s hard in Canada finding the good places to stay, and I’d love to travel more but haven’t since becoming a para simply because I’ve been stuck in horrible hotel rooms in the past (where I’d actually have to use the bathroom down in the lobby because my wheelchair wouldn’t fit in my bedrooms bathroom. Do you have shoulder issues from rolling? I’d love to see what your workout routine is, cause I’m limited and intimidated to go to a gym in a chair. Sending best wishes from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. ✌️

But when I broke my foot and was non weight bearing for nearly a year I honestly had to learn to hold my bladder and bowels (which has ruin my bladder and bowels even upto this day) for nearly a full day because using the bathroom in public including hospitals was impossible. It's as if they have able body people test these so call accessible places 🤣🤣 which defeats the fucking purpose. Then they feel as if money money when they have complaints and need to change it but they are too stupid to realize if you cared enough in the beginning and did it correctly in the beginning you wouldn't have complaints nor the need to redo it. I'm sorry disabled people have to go through this crap all because of others incompetence.

Interesting. I totally get your frustration. I have equal issues in a number of countries including the USA. It wasn’t at all my experience that ada solved the problems any better than my Canadian experience. While it’s far from perfect I would be reasonably happy with any room I can definitely access the toilet and it’s a bonus if I can have a shower. In that case I probably would have ditched the fold down and used a chair off the verandah in the shower. When I was in rehab I swore to kick the 4 pillows and 4 towels a day addiction they train you in. One towel and one pillow is plenty. I also make the effort to report on TripAdvisor any experience. One thing I would say is don’t let it ruin your day. They are just a place to sleep. It is always easier staying home with what you are familiar but where is the fun in that.
I would suggest that the angry disabled person approach isn’t one that promotes our cause well.

    • @tanellebolt9280
      @tanellebolt9280 Před 4 lety +1

Sleeping without a pillow between my knees causes all night long spasms; without one to hold onto while on my side I sometimes wake up having pushed my shoulder out (soft beds and dislocation issues). So ditching all the pillows is not something that allows me rest.
There was no option of a patio chair in this room, there was no patio. And the office chair (as seen in the video) had wheels, no good for the shower.
After driving from British Columbia to Saskatchewan and arriving at 2am to a presumably accessible room that was in fact not that friendly is enough to ruin my day.
It is these not-so-great experiences that fuelled this channel in hopes to raise enough awareness that people stop building barriers into things and start to think about everyone!
Thanks for watching. I hope you too will find these videos to be educational.

I have dealt with many of the same problems showed in this video. The problem is the (ADA) does not apply in Canada

    • @tanellebolt9280

Fact. The when I mention the ADA to most corporate Canadian companies I usually get laughed at, saying 'we're not them'.
We should be trying to excel, not making excuses.

Omg right?!?.. I had an “accessible “?room with no mirrors my height and the bathroom door went in also so I couldn’t even come up at any angle to transfer to the toilet which made it so I was unable to do my bowel program and no bench in the shower, but I wouldn’t have been able to get in there anyway. I’m not sure what they think is accessible.. they need to go in in a wheelchair with bindings on their hands and feet and try feeding some of our struggles then they would understand !

Where my charity, RAD Recreation Adapted Society shows up with a trailer full of adaptive devices and a plan for an obstacle course around their neighbourhood... and send everyone on their adaptive mission. Shoelaces tied together with a seat belt on in the wheelchair.

Unfortunately, because this is Canada, it can't really be referred to as ADA compliant because the name implies these are only American laws. However, I do agree that the bathroom looks really dangerous. I'm a wheelchair user myself and I'm kind of nervous something like this will happen if I travel alone :/

First it seemed very hard what you did but if a so much disabled person came without any helper he/she wouldn't be able to arrange herself, nor in the morning, nor anywhen! Haven't we disabled the right to care for ourselves independent as possible? Yes!!! Don't know how long we had to wait for it! And ourone always has to pay extra: for shoes or things to open a bottle, they don't have special things to eat on my own, in the rehab(!!!) l had to sit in front of the table so noone could come around as long l was sitting and eat! I need long times cauz l've a paralysed larynx since birth! After first day in the middle of the day l ate at my room. There l could sit as long as l needed. But l never felt well. If a reha doesn't have what needed what do you wish to see in a hotel? World has to turn around with v what and when they want. Will they ever do if we don't protest loud? No!
I had to give them a note frem 1 to 5 after my visit which took 4 weeks. With all good will l gave 2 stars because most of the rehabsport l couldn't do because of my needs in wheelchair! They always told me: No, you can't, no, don't try!l gave them my doctor's report first, they knew who l am and what l can and what not! Why did they take me? I don't know exept to make money with holding my body there and doing nearly nothing with me!

I thought twice: the hotel needn't steal all own thoughts of a paralysed person!l've got hand-gripps l can suceonto the wall like you got at home for the douce! You can take it with you! You can put your own towel against slippering with you when in hotel. You know they're stolen every day several times, by disabled persons, too! Same with unslippering towel onto the seat. You can sweaten one and lay down. The gripp l wrote you can put wherever youeneed. If they everywhere hang them there's so less place to move without hurt yourself. Towel hangs l take 5 or 6 with me everytime for being in hospital or hotel if money enough. But, yes, it's poor this time! And, important for us all, as a great tip: you can buy for small money some airfilling -epossible cussions 1m long or more, 30 to 45 cm square. These made with a few sheets that you get by reception, helps in all overnight - situations you may go throuth.0 To hang your clothes there were a lot more coat hanger l used to find in France or in Germany, Austria, Spain, ltaly, Switzerland or Great Britain where friends and l have been till know. So we packet little SOS - packets with things written above and with a fan which isn't there in more than 3 of 5 times! Something for in the power points, too! I've got a little thing for my handwashed cloths jver the heater in the rooms for to dry things. There l can hang a lot! Some spray for desinfection, sorry enough, is needed from time to time. And: for all who pee through katheters:it's niche to pack it thenafter into some newspaper or toilet paper to not been found in a peper basket when finished. Or: the cleaning personemay not know what it is and l don't want to make her vomit or so. We, too, have attitudes, they don't know. In rooms/hotels l mere than once stay ovrnigths or for several times in vacation or holidays (l'm no native speaker, so sorry, l try to write correct, believe me, please!)(thx:) ) and if l like athmosphere or/and meals, kindness, lwrite down my special needs, explain and show by going in my room with enabled person. Then l handle it out, together with my adress, and ask, if it's necessary , if they can have it there when next time l'll come again. If so, l come againe, make loud compliments for best service - and write it on the bill when paying - and you can be nearly sure you'll get it next time and next time and next time……… i've noticed that some hotels did so with all rooms or had put things there if asked with a hint insido of their the rooms. They don't have to hake wheelchaired people as guests, you can dcide to take a room there or decide against. It's your turn, you're free! And, if very nerved after a long journey, it's fine to have a long backscratcher with you, with a magnet glued at its back and a gum to häld your ashing tool or in other rooms to scratch your legs or backs or to angle things outside of your reach on the table to you or to put keys from car or home back to your hands or or or or! L've got one in every bag, foldable or telescopic, in every room andeitsVery nice and helps me and others! Tadaa! Better than moaning, but moaning is undersandible.
Please, understand, you ARE right! But WE OURSELVES can change things, turn world into better places! Even if they'd asked a disabled person it depends of his/her own needs by hights, weights, or "%s" of disability or/and of missing functions of their bodies and what his/her needs are about!(Is "about right? And it's different with every wheelchair they come with, too! Don't know! Last not least: l always put my dessous into a little box, then l pack it into my bag: so l can put it dow near wherever l need it: near shower, near toilet, near bed, near seat in the evening watching TV. The box has a velcro and a zipper l put on, too. Save against eyes of a cleaner if you can safe it with a tiny combination - lock if you want to put there katheters etc, too. Use a tiier one everyday in rucksack so it can fall down wherever l'm silly and there's nothingto be ashamed if it falls down in a train, bus station, at school or elsewhere.] Please correct me! Thanks! You help me with every video! Yes, you do! We, on the other hand, can help the abled people, too, with kindness and force! Uh, l swim! Don't know if l use the right words! I'm sorry if l hurt you! Then, please l beg you pardon!
So l'm here, for any answers and for correcting me, please!
    Yours,
Conny L. Whishing you and all around, having worked hard for the videos, a Happy and blessed New Year 2020! Feel free, feel as wonderful as you are!

It seems that hotels and motels in America ( including restaurants, entertainment venues- essentially any place that MUST COMPLY WITH ADA rules (and I 100% agree with that- this is an aging population. I myself just had back surgery. I am a baby boomer. I am starting to realize that every friend I have has some disability. I just found you on You Tube. Your presentations are awesome. You need to work for giant corporations as they build new sites. I am sure there are consultants but in America; they need to be not just focusing on “space.” That is what I notice when they give me rooms for the disabled because I bring my dog with me. Sorry. But that does point to my original point. Canada and America need to find consultants ( you) to make important and disabled lives as normal and user friendly as possible. Canada needs laws as well. America needs more USEFUL LAWS!!!!!!! Have you contacted anyone? Are you interested in doing so? Linda
