  • nigeria niger rail project - Nigeria Secures $1.3 Billion For Mega Rail Project To Link Niger - Imagine a continent where dusty roads and unreliable trucks are a relic of the past. Imagine a future where bustling megacities like Kano in Nigeria are seamlessly connected to their neighbors, not by choked arteries, but by sleek veins of steel - a modern railway network pumping life into the economic heart of Africa. This vision, once a distant dream, has inched a step closer to reality with Nigeria's bold $1.3 billion investment in a landmark rail project linking them to neighboring Niger.
This isn't just about connecting two cities; it's a potential game-changer for African connectivity. To understand the significance, consider the current state of African rail. The continent boasts a mere 11,000 kilometers (6,800 miles) of operational railways, a stark contrast to Europe's staggering 236,000 kilometers (146,000 miles). This lack of infrastructure acts as a chokehold on trade, isolates communities, and stifles economic growth. The Kano-Maradi railway, a seemingly modest 284 kilometers (176 miles) itself, holds the promise to be a catalyst for a much larger transformation.
The details of the project are as ambitious as they are strategic. The 284-kilometer line will be built to standard gauge, the international gold standard for rail transport. This ensures seamless movement of freight and passengers across borders, eliminating costly and time-consuming transfers. Construction will be undertaken by the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), a global giant with a proven track record in African infrastructure projects.
The $1.3 billion price tag might seem hefty, but it's an investment with the potential for exponential returns. Here's where the breakdown gets interesting: a consortium led by CCECC will contribute a staggering 85% of the funds. The remaining 15% will be shouldered by the Nigerian government alongside institutions like the African Development Bank and the African Export-Import Bank. This partnership signifies a crucial shift - Africa is no longer solely reliant on foreign aid for infrastructure development.

      Should we be borrowing anything?
What is the essence of building a $13B project if the borders where within is porous, banditry, terrorism & kidnapping stalls any progressive micro & macro economics activities?
      Etc.

I love train travels. We use to travel by train as a child growing up in the sixties in Nigeria, but not anymore. I seriously want to travel by train again from Cape to Cairo before departing this planet earth. Let the whole Africa be linked up with rail tracks. ❤

How many times Nigeria corrupt government will secure loan for the same project? Buhari regime did the same...so where is the money since they didn't execute the project.

I stopped watching when the video stated that this rail line would be built by a foreign company. African companies should be spearheading infrastructure development. African engineers, African surveyors, African labor, skilled and unskilled. After all, who built Great Zimbabwe? Africans. Who sculpted those magnificent bronze sculptures prevalent in ancient Benin? Africans. Who built the pyramids of Egypt and Kush? It sure as hell wasn't the Greeks or the Gauls. Videos like this celebrate African achievements that aren't African achievements at all. Give me a modern accomplishment that has been conceived, designed, and built by Africans.

Exactly. Then they said "not dependent on foreign aid", yet 85% comes from Chinese company lmfao
They aren't even doing 50-50 deal. That would be reasonable. They can train the locals on their skill set and employ people.
Instead, the loan will be given by China, and China will take the money back with their paid workers, THEN the loan will be paid back with interest!!
      That's paying the loan twice!

The british/european stooges we have as leaders(or better said-rulers) are indirectly telling us that going to school to study engineering and the likes is a waste of time. What the FF do china have that we don't have? what the F are china doing that we cannot do? the worse thing about all of this is that the technology being built for us is years behind the technology that china currently possess. It's a slap in the face and a mockery smh

Solve electricity and security issues first and stop dancing around the main problems. Would a rail connection to niger bring in investment opportumities? Will it solve unemployment problems? Why dont you spend same money to establish small factories for manufacturing goods or even spend the money in farming so we can have surplus of food to cut down price of food stuffs? Nonsense.

You do everything simultaneously. You cannot have development without transportation. You need trains to move gas plants turbine from one point to another. Also foods, minerals and manufactured products. Transportation comes first. It makes it easier to get other things done.

Although this project is intended to facilitate international commerce, it will pose a serious security nightmare for the people of Nigeria as the routes will also transport illicit weapons, bandits and terrorists or even encourage sinister imperial incursions into Nigeria from the Sahel. At the end, it is ill-conceived. Presently, Nigeria is unable to protect itself from Kidnappers and bandits coming in from that region.
