- Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Zyprexa (olanzapine) which is a second generation neuroleptic or antipsychotic (SGA). Although it is referred to as an antipsychotic, this medication can be utilized in the treatment of mania (in bipolar disorder) and also can be used to treat depression (for example, augmenting an SSRI or SNRI). It has the potential for many side effects, and some of them are discussed in this video.

They gave my mother Zyprexa while she was dying from cancer to improve her appetite.
Nice but he did not talk about the consequences of discontinuing the drug. No one ever does. For me, that is a gaping omission. People need to know about it when trying to make an informed decision about taking the drug.
I have BP 1 disorder..took me 3 years and 5 manic episodes to start takin my olanzapine.
I feel weak and my dr wants me to x4 my dosage. I dont want to go up but i dont want to have another break.
Can one/you withdrawal from Olanzapine/Zyprexa safely and successfully? Or do you relapse?
They didn't check any of this stuff while I was on olanzapine. The relentless insomnia is the worst and doesn't seem to go away even after stopping the medication.
@donmakavelli741 From 5 milligrams I started taking chips like every four days. Seems like around the 3rd or 4th day I would really start feeling the withdrawals, and one day I just dropped off. I don't recommend this and wish I would've found a professional that helped me taper off. I had to get treated involuntarily with something about 6 months after quitting.
Same with Seroquel. It's a total nightmare to try to get off, you don't sleep for weeks.

I'm on seroquel and the withdrawal is a nightmare. Could switching to Olanzapine and then getting off of that be easier?

how long does the insomnia caused by stopping the treatment last? or how is it treated?

Doctor prescribed olanzapine for insomia with clonazepam. If i take clonazepam 5mg with olanzapine 5mg i couldn't sleep. If i take clonzepam only means i could sleep peacefully .Does Olanzapine will give sleep disturbance?
Get away from that garbage while you still have a chance. It will destroy your life. I PROMISE

TO the doctor recording this, I am wondering, should Zyprexa/Olanzipine be used as an only sleep treatment??? Or do believe if people are struggling to sleep, there are better medications than using a Anti-psychotic drug to make someone sleep???

I have a older brother who has been on Zyprexa for over 30 years and have been a lot of Evil voices come out of his mouth, since he received his medication. Things have gotten worse as the years have gone by, and has been drinking alcohol mainly beer or booze now and then, which obviously affects his drugs, and also smokes cigarettes with the medication also.
What do you recommend as a doctor that as my older brother, who ignores doctors advice, smokes with his medication, and buys alcohol to make matters worse and our whole family suffers nicotine abuse around our house. I am living here in NZ if you wanted to know where I am commenting from.

This is alarming news. Zyprexa, and these types of meds Can damage your Brain long term run. Search Peter Breggin, Joanna Moncrieff or Peter Whitaker, These of 3 experts know that these drugs are not doing what the doctors are prescribing to people, and in fact are damaging not just themselves but causing others to suffer their "issues", which is not fair on other family households, if these drugs are not properly communicated or talked over to other family members. This is what Privacy Laws are not doing effectively enough to ensure that when someone is getting a medication from the doctor, other family members are not being informed enough to see if the medication or medicine that family member is taking is the correct medication or dosage of the medication, and is either working for that individual or that person's medication is NOT working properly to the effect of that person's medication. I am more talking about the psychoactive drugs or psychotic drugs many are using today.

I tried it for resistant depression. If it don't cause so much hunger 5mg help a lot with antidepressant. But it cause so much hunger and gain weight. The problem you are always hungry and this make you stress and nervous. So this is bad paradox
I'm sorry to hear that you had so much difficulty with appetite and weight gain with this medication. Some individuals are susceptible to these side effects, while others will not have this side effect. It is good to know that you responded to it (regarding the depression). I recommend discussing your experience and side effects with your provider, as there may be ways that they can decrease the weight gain, or similar options with less risk. If I lower the dose a little, I will not be able to sleep. This is the most difficult problem I face. This medicine is poison Does anyone have a solution?

L.D.; u most certainly can stop taking psych meds but do so very slowly (not abruptly). Psych meds (regardless of which med it is & the dosage) has withdrawal-like effects that mimic the (alleged) condition. The manner in how medical/mental health personnel handle withdrawal "symptoms"; there apt 2 provide more meds 4 u which will further aggravate matters. After all; since u r 1 taking these toxic meds, u r the 1 who knows ur body best.

Sir, I'm a schizophrenia patient and unmarried 34 years old. Doctor gave me amisulpride 200 mg and olanzapine 10 mg twice a day for last 2 months.
Now I am feeling absence of morning erection and when I tried to erect my penis it's don't get hard.
Please suggest me how to reverse ed and get morning erection....

While I could never give you specific information on how to treat your condition and symptoms, it is very important for anyone with sexual dysfunction to have a full workup by their primary care provider. It's important to make sure that there aren't other factors (like high cholesterol, diabetes etc) that could be playing a role.
Medications can certainly cause sexual SE's, and individuals would need to always weigh the risks and benefits with their provider of their medication regimen. Some medications may be more (or less) likely to cause sexual side effects, but if those medications do not adequately treat psychosis, then a medication with more side effects may be warranted. If a workup from someone's primary is negative for another cause for the sexual side effects, and if someone's providers assess that it is safe, using medications like viagra, levitra, cialis could be warranted.
There are supplements that some individuals use, but there can be interactions with medications, and I'd recommend asking your provider directly about any over the counter remedies.

Sorry but "treatment" actually AGGRAVATES PSYCHOSIS!!!!! 2 say that a "medication w/more side effects may be warranted" 2 "treat" PSYCHOSIS is so ignorant. This "antiquated" mentality is a clear example where the side effects DO cause/compound psychosis. Pardon me if this sounds "patronizing" but so does being told that mental health conditions REQUIRE MEDICATION!!!! In other words; medication is a "1st/only" resort as "treatment".
You trip so hard you don't even know that you took Zyprexa. You forget because your memories are imaginary. You could have conversations with friends that you knew from high school and you can sit there for two hours having a conversation with this good friend of yours from high school, only to realize two hours later that you never even knew this person and that this person never even was in your room. You were just talking to the wall but you were hallucinating an entire human being with whom you had an intelligent conversation.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. If someone ever has this kind of reaction, it's incredibly important to speak to their provider right away. I highly recommend to do a warning clip that people shouldn't coldturkey the drugs or rapid switch. A friend of mine (no psych history, was doing therapy instead of jailtime) coldturkeyed and had a massive withdrawal psychosis which caused him to commit suicide. More warnings about withdrawal problems would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

For me it's like I practice alot for future conversations, I don't Hallucinate but I have manic bipolar, it keeps me down in a normal state.

What do you know about these medications? You are saying he should be in jail for discussing a medication? What charge? How do you define "limited knowledge"? Any information you do not like means the person stating it has "limited knowledge? How do you determine this? What is your measuring criteria? Wha about "less limited knowledge"? If the MD had "knowledge" what would be be saying instead? You want to throw out the Constitution and arrest people for speech?
