    I remember being at school in leicester and getting the train and watching by the manchester road terrace just to watch Peter Thompson , him and George Best there was a stunned silence whenever they had the ball , just wish there was more videos of Peter Thompson an absolute genius.

    Burnden Park in the days when it was still a decent football ground, before they put seats in the Lever End and built a bloody supermarket behind the goal at the other end.

    RIP Peter Thompson and Garry Jones.
    Go a long way to see two penalties taken with that sort of coolness.
    Proper grounds players and atmosphere.

    I was at this game as an Oldham supporter, standing on the terrace closest to Manchester Road. We had a very decent first half to the season, beating Bolton 2-1 at Boundary Park on Boxing Day, then winning 3-0 at Chelsea in the New Year. It all fell apart soon after that, we only won one of our last 16 games and were lucky not to be relegated.
    Always thought John Platt was overrated as a keeper, not as good as Chris Ogden, and it shows with the two penalties.

    Hardly any Oldham there that day. I vaguely remember about a group of 70 or so. Same season Bolton took over 10,000 to Boundary Park.

    " Who'd be in his shoes now?"
    Passes a penalty into net like hes playing in back garden with a toddler.
    Top player Paul Jones.

    My Mum took me from Lancaster for my tenth birthday which was this very day. Thoroughly enjoyed it but there was constant loud, relentless and dreadful racism directed at Oldham’s Alan Groves all through the game from the stand we were in (the side the cameras were on). Thankfully times are a bit different nowadays

    • @staceygrove5976
      @staceygrove5976 Před 3 lety

      Not sure I understand this. Groves was a white man, though he did have an 'afro' type hairstyle at the time.

      @@staceygrove5976 it’s 100% true that it happened as I was there...perhaps the Afro and his swarthy complexion fooled the crowd, perhaps they were taking the piss just to get at him

    was the ITV Sport S Replay ident on the original Kick Off Match broadcast or did Granada not use the S ident on the Kick Off Match and were the Replays done by LWT for the regions

      @martindean5560 Před 9 lety

      OK Darren, i think i played cricket with your brother at Heaton ? however,the question you asked, Bolton v Oldham was the main match on Granada,This is from LWT and they would have picked the highlights out,and put there symbol in the corner.There is a website ,if you put in regional football in the 70s it tells you who was on Kick Off,The Big Match,Central Etc,Hope this helps
