From the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, from the English Channel to the North Sea, he shares the triumphant years of 1941 and 1942, when German U-boats nearly strangled England, to the apocalyptic final years of destruction, disillusionment, and defeat.

The people who kept such good logs and diaries are a source of immense information. I remember reading the Sec Of State of the US Confederacy (Judah P. Benjamin) planning his escape with the belief that his body would be desecrated and he would want death in the enemy camp. That seems to be this captain’s mindset at 14:00.

Thanks for featuring this. I lost track of my CZcams listing, when the captain said goodbye to dear old 953 and found himself on a train to … I won’t be a spoiler. This is great writing …. experience it for yourself. An imaginative playwright could write a good play with this diary. The power of the Reich, the glory of successful battles to the end of war and then the art of survival just begins.

The story was incredible. The U-boat crews in Norway would have been isolated from the Eastern Front horrors, the Death camps - etc. The part of the story I found myself longing for, was how he felt upon learning of the Holocaust - the forceful imprisonment and forced labor of Russian pows, the sheer butchery of the regime he served. Did he ever come to realize all this? Much of the story fits the expected mindset of a U-boat officer. However, the brutality of the Nazi regime seems to never crop up in the post war biographies.

anyone find it fitting that the U boat "wolves" who sunk so many civilian ships would find post war treatment only a few levels better than how Germany treated the Jewish peoples??

Oh, how brave the French are - after someone else wins the war for them. Probably the first time any of them faced the Germans.
