Thanks for posting this video...I remember actually being happy that even though India lost, David Gower was responsible for England winning!! This was the series that turned me into a lifelong David Gower fan!! More Gower videos if possible!!
Funny how diplomatic the commentators were about umpires' cock-ups. 'The batsman just getting the benefit of the doubt,' says Illy after a run-out chance. Batsman was miles short.
Very flamboyant left hand opener...played in an era of quality bowlers - including against the 1984 West Indians...possibly the greatest test side of all time..and scored a century in the series. Better than anything Alastair Cook has ever dreamt of achieving.....
+Richard0470 I know we used a lot of openers in the 80s! Obviously Gooch & Boycott were two of our best ever; I wondered if you could tell me which of the others were any good? The following opened for England in the 80s: Mike Brearley, Wayne Larkins, Chris Tavare, Geoff Cook, Derek Randall, Chris Smith, Andy Lloyd, Chris Broad, Tim Robinson, Wilf Slack, Mark Benson, Martyn Moxon, Bill Athey, Tim Curtis, John Stephenson. !Quite a few!
Gooch and Boycott are one of the most successful partnerships we have had in any era complementing each other beautifully and to be fair we struggled for consistency against far higher quality opening attacks than today [Lawson, Alderman, Imran, Kapil Dev, Marshall, Garner, Hadlee], until Gooch and Atherton 10 years later. Tavare, Randall & Athey were not true openers and did not do the job for their counties although all had some success in the role for England. Of the rest probably Broad and Robinson are best remembered...Broad for a magical period Nov 86 - Jan 88 & Robinson during the 85 Ashes. Broad's chance famously only coming after the tragic injury sustained by Andy Lloyd in the 1st teat in 84 v West Indies.
Those were the days. We didn't had TV at home. Had watched these matches in my neighbours house

Chiki would have been made a great prospect for T20, if this format had been played in those days
Kris Srikkanth would have loved IPL
God Pringle was an ordinary cricketer at that level!
But he had a great WC in 1992.

Funny how diplomatic the commentators were about umpires' cock-ups. 'The batsman just getting the benefit of the doubt,' says Illy after a run-out chance. Batsman was miles short.

Maninder Singh to David Gower....height of cricket elegance.

Yes, irony was my aim.

17:00 a disgrace that Downton was being selected over Jack Russell during this period
Was it last match of sandeep Patil?
There was no Botham in this series, India won both the ODI and test series, but if Botham was around, results could have been different.

Fowler last game for England....what a way to finish...fluke catch by Binny
+Richard0470 Hi Richard. Wasn't Fowler quite a good player? I'm too young to recall him.
Very flamboyant left hand opener...played in an era of quality bowlers - including against the 1984 West Indians...possibly the greatest test side of all time..and scored a century in the series. Better than anything Alastair Cook has ever dreamt of achieving.....
Nice to see you on here Rob!
