How to Clean Your Condensate Drain Line

Hey, first-time homeowners, if you wanna keep your air conditioner conditioning your air, you need to clean out your condensate drain line every one to three months. Oh, also: Your air conditioner … has a condensate drain line. (Don’t look so guilty. Your parents prolly didn’t do this either.)
Your HVAC system’s condensate drain line - also commonly referred to as your AC drain line - collects accumulating condensation from your air conditioning system and channels it away from your house. Over time, this line can become clogged with dirt, dust, dead bugs and other debris, becoming a breeding ground for mold and bacteria - and possibly resulting in a backup, which could cause water damage to your home.
Prevent all this by keeping your condensate line clean and clear by following these six simple steps:
0:46 1. Turn off your HVAC unit and cut the power at the breaker box.
0:50 2. Find your condensate drain line - typically a length of vertically oriented PVC pipe with a cap on top, located near your indoor HVAC unit.
0:57 3. Some units are covered by caps. If yours has a cap, remove it to access the drain line. If it doesn’t, proceed with the next step.
1:05 4. Clear out any visible blockage with a latex-gloved finger or long slender implement like a screwdriver.
1:12 5. Pour a half-cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line.
1:17 6. Wait 30 minutes to an hour.
1:24 7. Flush the line by pouring half a cup of water in.
1:29 8. Check the outside end of the pipe to ensure it flows freely.
And there you have it: Your condensate line … and your conscience … are clean.

Main issue is that most of the time the clogs are up-stream of where you're adding the vinegar.

This is really more intended as a preventive measure so clogs don't happen in the first place.

Dang I just did this but only waited about 5 minutes after pouring in the white vinegar before I started my AC back up. Did I mess anything up by starting it too early?

I don't think it's an exact science, but waiting longer gives the vinegar longer to do its thing.
