Typhoon Train Attack (IL-2 Sturmovik : Battle of Normandy)

  • A straight-forward 24 km flight from Asch (in Holland) to attack a German train travelling between Vise and Tongeren (both in Belgium).
The aircraft is a Hawker Typhoon Mk.1b.
It was a relatively late entrant into the War and was powered with a very powerful engine - a Napier Sabre 2180 hp engine, which gave the aircraft a top speed of 663 km/hr (very fast for the 1940's!!).
The aircraft was armed with 4 x 20cm cannon (very lethal/effective!) and was usually armed with bombs and/or rockets (usually 8 x high-explosive, or armour-piercing, rockets).
In this video, I make three attacks on a train using my 4 x 20 cm cannon and 8 x high-explosive rockets.
I achieved limited success - causing the locomotive to uncouple from its wagons - with light damage to the locomotive but destroying 2 -3 wagons.
Although I get hit by flak coming up from the train, the damage to my aircraft is negligible.
Aiming UNGUIDED rockets isn't easy and takes a lot of practice (one needs to aim high because the drop-off in the rockets' trajectories occurs rapidly).

My uncle flew Typhoons - he was shot down and killed as he attacked the marshalling yards at Osnabruck on 24/02/1945.
He is buried at Reichswald cemetary on the Dutch / German border. he was 21 years old and had been flying for 4 years - virtually unheard of for a fighter pilot. He is buried next to a bomber gunner aged 17.
    War is not a game.

Thanks for the tip. If I can find it I can add it to my book 'From a Luftwaffe fighter pilot's perspective' about Luftwaffe Messerschmitt pilot Johannes Steinhoff trying to defend Sicily by the end of the war.... I loved their perspective and reading about their problems with supplies and incompetence at the highest level all the way up to Goering and Hitler himself.
He later got badly burned in a crash with a Me 262, survived the war and became a general in the modern Luftwaffe... You must have seen a picture of him with his face badly disfigured..... fascinating read...
And since the Typhoon is one of my favorite WWII aircraft I sure will look for this book... thanks again...

Best way to destroy the train - Hit the track immediately in front of the train. Travelling at speed it will spectacularly derail.
    - Hit the main part of the engine with the cannon i.e. the boiler. Steam pressure will do the damage.

@@edwardcarberry1095 battleships moved past 8 inch guns a long time ago, pre-20th century. They were already armed with 12 inch guns in 1900, and by the time of a Typhoon engagement like this there were 14, 15 and 16 inch gun armed battleships in the European theatre. And in the Pacific there were a pair of Japanese behemoths armed with 18.1 inch guns, which I think were the largest battleship guns ever put to sea... didn't really help much when the endless waves of carrier aircraft came for them, but impressive nonetheless. :)

Might spot a target of op on the way home as well. But only one pass on the train. Starting higher will allow more aim time and better results. I don't mean 5000 feet. LOL. But 1500 perhaps.
