This is why the Republicans removed that book from school libraries.
I was always under the impression that the United States was a freedom of religion country. I'm curious as to how they would feel if public schools started posting parts of the Koran or Jews posting parts of the Tora up in the schools their children go to because that is the exact door they have opened. This is just another wedge Republicans are attempting to use to divide Americans. I agree with you, if you want to use religious text of any kind make them universal to all mankind, so that we can all grow better together rather than an attempt to divide us all. Religions belong at home and church not the general public so that it might offend those that don't believe the same.

When I was ten, I started attending a DoDDSD school for military dependents in Italy. We didn’t say the Pledge of Allegiance every day. I don’t even remember there being a flag in the classrooms. We were there to be educated, not indoctrinated. That’s why when I was 13 and newly-arrived to the Duval County school district in Florida, I was in the 8th grade and reading at a college freshman level.
Unless the class is teaching theology, leave the Ten Commandments out of the schools. They can learn that in a church, which is the proper classroom for that. My DoDDSD school was separate from the Chaplain holding services in a local cathedral and the Christian Serviceman’s Association mission, whose pastor lived two buildings down from me and was the scoutmaster of the local Boy Scout troop.
“To every thing there is a season.” The schools are not there for you to learn doctrine and morals. The schools are there to learn reading, writing, arithmetic, history, geography and a whole host of other things.
This is a bad law, written by bad people, who don’t know what they are doing. If they do know what they are doing, they are doing it with bad intentions. The practice of my religion, Native American Animism, was outlawed in the United States until that law was repealed in 1978, when I was five. This law is a stepping stone to reinstate that other law.
There is no ground to give on this one. Even the suggestion of the beatitudes as an alternative is too much to ask. If it was a quote from the Haditha , the Midrash or the Rig Veda, it would be no different. The First Amendment is as clear as it could be. In a government-funded school, there can be no religion given a place of prominence by law, none of them. It violates the first commandment that our government was handed down by its creators in the Bill of Rights.
Willfully depriving someone of their rights under the Bill of Rights carries a 10-year prison sentence. That’s a criminal offense. That’s how the Klan was busted up in Mississippi when the local courts didn’t convict them, so there is precedent for charging the lawmakers who passed this law.
I love ya, Rev, but your attempt to find compromise isn’t a solution to the problem. This is a “Render unto Caesar” moment.

"The practice of my religion, Native American Animism, was outlawed in the United States until that law was repealed in 1978, when I was five." That law violated the First Amendment, which not only restricts establishment of a state religion, but also forbids hindering the practice of religion. (However, religious practices that violate the rights of others, such as human sacrifice or "honor killings", would be forbidden.)

I recommend that everyone watch "The Handmaid's Tale". Many people claim that the series is anti-Christian, but in actuality, the series mocks the people who use religion to control people ( particularly females ). Even though the people in control in "The Handmaid's Tale" profess to be Christian, they seldom mention Jesus, but over 90% of the time, they espouse the "Old Testament".

When I was little in Oregon, we used to start our week with the whole school, grades 1-5, singing a little song about the Golden Rule. Problem was, nobody ever taught us what the Golden Rule was. I was in my early 20’s when I found out- even though, I went to Sunday school too.
I wouldn’t mind if schools tried to bring back the Golden Rule (which happens in bunches of religions) and actually taught kids what it means without knocking anyone over the head with the Bible.

The question should be asked -- as it is from nearly all activities regarding schools: "What are we trying to accomplish with this, and how will we measure it?"
I was raised in a community in Michigan with a high population of Muslim students. There were places in public school classrooms -- and other special rooms set aside -- to accommodate prayer. There were no Koran verses posted anywhere, but the rooms had a marker that provided the direction to Mecca.
My main concern about the Louisiana proposal is that the Scripture from which the ten commandments are drawn is considered the Holy Word of the Almighty, and posting them up like movie flyers risks being an exercise in trivializing the sacred text.

Do you agree that [our county's] public school’s administrators have a duty to focus on research-based curricula and teachings that prepare our children for 21st century jobs and that they should avoid wasting taxpayer funds on personal, political vendettas that undermine their professionalism and credibility with our children and divide our community?
Looking forward to voting on that one.

Maybe another way to look at it would be that posting the 10 commandments in the classroom could be used teach the future voters of Louisiana all the ways in which law makers of Louisiana break the 10 commandments. It would be a good lesson about hypocrisy and the idea that those in power have a "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy that is detrimental to the well being of regular citizens of their state and that people like that should not be voted into office.

A humble proposal .... seeking compromise. Instead of posting ten commandments, create a curriculum that keys in on the TENTH commandment -- with the others to be considered for addition upon review.
The tenth commandment has to do with not "coveting" what your neighbor has. But... this forms the very basis of our capitalist economy. Most of what Madison Ave. does is create desires rather than being grateful for what we have.... and this is only the beginning.
Go ahead ... put #10 up there. Make my day.

As a former English teacher, whenever Republican lawmakers want to pass legislation regarding schools and classrooms, I always cringe. A classroom should be the special domain of both teachers and students. It should reflect the multicultural environment that is in most public schools. If I was still teaching and had to abide by this heinous law, I would put up that ridiculous 10 Commandments poster and I would surround it with text from all the major religions: Jewish, Muslim, Buddhism, etc. Because why should Christianity have a special place in my classroom?
Not to mention, it is ludicrous that a math or science classroom have anything religious displayed in it.
