How to become s Swiss guard?
1. You need to be a Swiss Citizen
2. You need to be a Male and single
3. You must be a Catholic
4. At least you have a height of 5"8 and above
5. You must have served in the military for 2 years
Well that was the requirements 10 years ago i don't know now if they have changed it
My friend while I understand your frustration ,which is righteous. Please stop saying that all Catholics are Pedarasts (spelling check please) .
@@josecouchetdiaz993 Dude, when they showed up at the Rekrutenschule to present the Swiss Guards we thought they must be joking given the low salary you get for a boring job. Only one argument had to be made: Schildwache. Look it up or something.
Hastati ™ do you have to be genetic or nationalized
you must be gay too!
At 9:35 you see a German Stalhelm at the top left. This is because in WWII a single German NCO stationed in Rome decided he had enough of war and formally surrendered to the Swiss guard and the Vatican state. The Swiss guard still keep his uniform, MP38, and equipment at their armories. The Swiss guard almost never throw anything away so they've still got a bunch of antique edged weapons and early firearms at their armories.
That helmet looks more like a m16/18 Stalhelm ,not a ww2 variant ( like m35,m40). So maybe that isn’t the helmet of the german NCO.

I used to think the Swiss Guard Gala uniform looked just ridiculous when I was younger. Now as an adult I kind of think they're beautiful... still ridiculous of course, but beautiful as well.
FYI: the gala is also used as a camouflage uniform by guards at the Louvre during abstract art exhibitions.

The uniforms might look abit silly in modern times, but everyone who wears them has served in the swiss army before he can wear one. And popes used to be murdered all the time before the Swiss began protecting them. I don't think a singe pope has been murdered since. So that's a 100% success record on the guard for over 500 years. Also those uniforms look way cooler than the British Queens guards in my humble opinion.
Respect from this random Finn.
Redcoats look classy. Swiss guards look gaudy, as if they were wearing a clown costume. The queen's guards have far more respectable uniforms
You're right. I do like those traditional uniforms of various armies but Vatican Guards looks awesome, respectfully and extremally grand compare to others.
@@justinbeath5169 Someone has issues.
@@Clay3613 nope, i just can't respect a clown costume
The swiss guard gaud uniform is obviously derived from the slashed doublets, made popular by the Landsknechts in the early renaissance. I'd take military dress uniforms that call back to a time of ruthlessness then ones when it's such because red was a cheap dye.
You should have also covered their ceremonial weapons, aside from their side swords they also use halberds, obviously, and flamberge greatswords. If i'm not mistaken some of these weapons are renassaince originals.
Yes they also have a arsenal of full auto wepons.

This was an extremely interesting video and very well-made. I didn't realize that their uniform was a modern invention made to imitate the earlier style; I always just assumed that it was from the sixteenth century because it imitates that style so well. All the best!
A few people seem to think the "silly" uniforms make these guards somehow less effective.
They are all ex-swiss army soldiers who go through intensive training.
Any one of them would have no problem neutralising you with their Glocks, their Sig assault rifles, or their "silly" Halberd. Or even just their hands lol.
(Genuine question) What do you think the guards wearing the uniforms would do if the Vatican was attacked?
@@haydensewell7531 surrender probably. They are still swiss and we dont fight in wars anymore. But dont take my word for it
@@haydensewell7531 They're indeed still there to protect the Pope and everyone else living in the Vatican! The swiss guards are the smallest active army in the world so I do believe they would defend the Vatican because they swore an oath to god to protect the Pope! This is my view on it as I am from switzerland and have visited the Vatican and I have seen that they travel with the Pope everywhere he goes (undercover) and they controll the border of the Vatican very strictly. But as I said I do not know if this is true.. But I believe so.
@@D0A17599 Surrender? The swiss army wouldn't surrender either. Being neutral doesn't mean that you wouldn't defend yourself, it just means that you don't get involved in other countries' business (except for peace aid, as we are doing it anyways).
@@haydensewell7531 Fight? Very likely there is always an armed "reaction force" ready to fight, not all of the guards will be present in gala uniforms at any given time. The first line of defense would be the armed ones while the ones in gala uniforms would go change clothing and arm themselves, that shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes.

I'm not a huge fan of medieval style armours and such, but there's something about their use in a modern setting that makes them tremendously cool and interesting
Not medieval... The end of the Middle Ages is usually defined as the period between the middle of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. This is early modern. Their armor and helmet are specifically for the mid 16th century and beyond. The use of armor and helmets was common until the mid-17th century.
I never understood why people think they look silly...
If I was a catholic, I'd have joined the Swiss Guard!

Those halberds aren't toys, nor furniture, my friend
They receive training with the swords and halberds. But their main weapons are modern ones. These guys in the colorful uniforms are mainly for show, while the true security is in the background, armed with rifles, submachine guns and pistols. But if forced to, the guards would still be easily able to kill a man with the halberd or their sword.
@Love Law They are sharpened as far as I know. Because they aren't meant to be "only" ceremonial...

Way, WAY above the normal level of research and language you usually find on CZcams! Thanks!
And here i was , thinking that they are from Switzerland, because the Swiss are neutral and only Soldiers who do not follow any Nation that could be at war with the Vatican State could protect the Pope. Really interesting.
In fact, it has nothing to do with Swiss neutrality, it is rather due to the sacrifice of the Swiss Guard during the sack of Rome in 1506.
Love these uniforms! So classic and powerful!
Excellent video that provided a lot of information on the various Swiss Guard uniforms. I'm really grateful for this!
Love the information and details in this video! Cleared all my curiosities :) great work!
Being that the Swiss have four official languages, I assume that the members of this unit either speak all four languages fluently or the unit has one official language?
Upon joining the guard any member who doesn’t already speak Italian has to take courses to become proficient.
Like the Chad owning this channel said, they must speak Italian fluently
In essence they end up speaking italian with a odd mixture of roman and German or French accent.
@MrShtbrick The unit speaks Italian as an official language.

They’re a bit silly looking, but their helmets and halberds are kickass, and with the armour they look absolutely kickass. And I wouldn’t want to be stabbed in the ribs by the Halberd’s wicked spear tip.
Wow! Amazing material. Subscribed!
Congrats on the hard work!
I'll be waiting for the next video about the other 500 years of uniform history of the Pontificial Guard lol
Hear, hear! That'd be great to see also.
EXCELLENT VIDEO
It’s not surprising that the guard was revamped 1910. That was under the reign of Pope Pius X. He was a truly excellent Pope.
STRICT.
NO NONSENSE.
Very well done and correct informations!
Great video and history lesson really enjoyed this.
I can really appreciate the intricacies of these uniforms, especially because I myself am from a guards unit. That said, I'm much more into the tactical aspects of my job, and was never a fan of the high maintenance aspect of this. Lovely looks though!
Wow thanks for the vid, i've been looking for a complete Swiss Guard uniform preview and finally found it here. I was searching particularly for the one like in 12:42. I first saw it when i'm watching assassination attempts on popes, the one i saw wears a cloak with that uniform and was running, which looks awesome for me :p
Since when is a 14 minute video considered long?
Otherwise, great video!!
Another great post. Thank you...
Excellent. Informative and entertaining.
G'day UH, Thanks very much for this video.Excellent quick history of the Swiss Guard. These blokes don't look silly at all to me. They look like highly motivated, potentially lethal professionals; after all they are protecting perhaps the best known person on the planet, apart from whoever is POTUS. Plus at least one person in modern history has taken a potshot at a Pope. Answered a lot of common questions about the Swiss Guard, well done. Cheers, BH
Wonderful history!
Awesome channel :) may be not as relevant as other nations, but there are cool uniforms here in Colombia, specially the Marines which is pretty unique and Inpec, also nice the Independence and Peru war uniform.
Given the choice, I would love to have had the opportunity to join the Swiss Guard. It was never an option as I'm not Swiss, but if it were, it's certainly something that I would consider.
Fantatsic. Really interesting. Thanks
I am interested in knowing more about the relationship between the Swiss Guard/Vatican and it's suppliers. They have a special sock supplier? A blacksmith in Austria? I bet some of these business relationships are VERY old.
For sure probably the very best. I wonder who supplies their standard issue sidearm? Beretta?
Can you make a video about Gorka.
Or maybe VKBO
Yes! Two of my favorite uniforms
Very nice video, well documented. Just one precision the left-most uniform shown at 5:12 is actualy a corporal's one. The small differences with an hallabardier's uniform are the red fins on the arms and the red cocards at the bottom of the pants.
Great video. I'd love to see a video on the development of the Air Force service dress uniform and all the politics around it.
I hated wearing that cheap business suit. Wish they'd switch back to the three button version with pockets.
@@eldorados_lost_searcher If you're talking about USAF, I believe that they are working on a replacement for the old Class As. At one point they were experimenting with a version that had a stand up collar and a Sam Browne belt but I think that the current candidate is something simpler and kind of resembles the Marine Corps Alphas.
@@eldorados_lost_searcher Wrong, they're awesome.
@@Riceball01
There were two candidates, the first being the one with a Mandarin collar, which you described, the other was referred to as the "Billy Mitchell," which was a blue version of General Billy Mitchell's uniform, but with smaller lapels.
From what I understand, they dropped both because Congress is getting tired of the DOD spending money on their fashion shows.
The Marriott Guardsman Uniform sure hasn't changed very much over time.
Really interesting. Thanks🙏
Fun fact about the uniforms' destruction.
It's not usually completely done at the time of a guard's retirement. By tradition, the uniforms are hacked up with large shears before the scraps are disposed of.
This is often ordered as a punishment for minor infractions of guards or guard recruits, who will have to sit in a room hacking up old uniforms for a prescribed period of time.
i would love to see a video about MTP (Multi-terain-pattern)
Ps.: Great video
dude, this is cool
Well made!
I wonder would it be possible to add a mention of the rank insignia. I very much enjoyed the video.
Great video!! What about making one on Vatican Gendarmerie uniforms?
Can you do a vid about the uniforms at West Point?
The reason why the traditional uniforms are so wide and oversized is to give the soldier additional space for the body to move which was cruxial back when melee fighting was the main choice.
I would like to have the traditional blue training uniforms. They look more toned down and even ok for everyday use
I am looking forward to your coverage of SPACE FORCE uniforms. As always, you are very interesting and informative.
Very informative. Thank you. I've started collecting Camo jackets now and it's all your fault! :-)
Wow. Interesting.

Very cool .
Like many more "modern" conventional armies the Papal Swiss Guards will likely
also be wearing 3D plastic body armor in the future .
The Kings of France also had SWISS GUARDS as their mercenary bodyguards.
However, the Swiss Guards who served King Louis XVI were basically wiped out
during the French Revolution. A case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I don’t care what anyone else thinks, they look super amazing!
It is possible to have a video about the PCU from Patagonia and friends? ;-)

Where do I find the commandant armor in botw?
Could you to a video on the equipments of the millitary units
But, how do the 3D printed helmets compare to the steel ones against sword or axe strikes?
What about sports suits? Is there a special military suit for sport or do they use civilian clothes?
What happened to the desert night camo video?
I think their helmet problem with the metal one maybe because helmets from the 1900s onward have the suspension system built-in, and that the morion helmet needs some padding to separate it from the head.
I know of one helmet that came into private posession of a collector.
How old it is?
Pretty badass uniform IMO
i wonder if their harnesses are properly tempered,if so it could stop some small calibur bullets

Interesting. New topic suggestion.. The U.S. Field Jacket starting with WW2.
Can you do the history of the uniform of the evzones
and what type of uniform did the Swiss Guard use during WW2, apart from the gala uniform? Did they have XX style uniforms? Because I've heard that apart from alberds and swords, by 1944 they had also rifles, grenades, HMG & mortars, at least. In fact there was a serious thread from invasion by the SS, so...
I think I read somewhere the new 3d printed helmets also have a fan on the inside.
