IMO, few fighters since Tyson have managed to totally captivate like Mike did. When Mike Tyson fought, non-boxing fan's paid to watch. His fights dominated the news, social circles and conversations for weeks leading up to and after the fight. At his peak, pay-per-view fights became "Not to be missed social events". I remember people scheduling huge parties, BBQ's and bar gatherings. From a purely economic stand point, Mike Tyson generated a nearly un-calculable income for pub owners, restaurants, casino's, alcohol manufacturers, snacks and all the other things that go with a good old tailgate party. I remember going to a friends, everyone pitched in a few $ to cover the $65 pay-per-view (kind of a lot of money in 1988), the grill was fired up, beers where cracked, all the talk leading up to the fight was finished and then "Ding" goes the bell and "1,2,3" it's over! We were in utter shock. We hadn't even put the hotdogs on the grill yet. I hadn't even finished my first beer and it was over! After the third one of those party's, it all kind of faded LOL. I remember watching that Tyson/Douglass fight when I was younger....I remember Tyson knocking Douglass down, and the counter reaching 10 before the ref did before Tyson was knocked down. That was a big deal for literally a minute.,...then, it went away really fast, and they switched to watching the official count on Mike. I was younger and do not remember every detail...but, I sure remember the world being shocked...Hell, we were shocked as kids to watch the guy we saw destroy everyone get counted down. I do not think boxing has been anywhere near as big a national sport since that era, and prior. For some reason the guys that came later were either not as marketable, or something...even before MMA and UFC kinda took the top spot...there was a gap left in combat sports in the in-between time frame.

Tyson used to fuck some guy up then rush over after the fight and help him up and congratulate him and his corner and had real sportsmanship. After Don King became heavily involved in his career that he became a different fighter... he was never the same. I would 100% put him up against ANY boxer ever, with both in their prime. Not only in his punching power, BUT in his movement, defense, ability to throw from multiple angles in a short time, and something no one gives him credit for because of all his first round knockouts, but he had a decent jaw also. He was a well rounded fighter with great offensive talent. He's known for the one big punch, but he was so much more in his prime.

IMO, few fighters since Tyson have managed to totally captivate like Mike did. When Mike Tyson fought, non-boxing fan's paid to watch. His fights dominated the news, social circles and conversations for weeks leading up to and after the fight. At his peak, pay-per-view fights became "Not to be missed social events". I remember people scheduling huge parties, BBQ's and bar gatherings. From a purely economic stand point, Mike Tyson generated a nearly un-calculable income for pub owners, restaurants, casino's, alcohol manufacturers, snacks and all the other things that go with a good old tailgate party. I remember going to a friends, everyone pitched in a few $ to cover the $65 pay-per-view (kind of a lot of money in 1988), the grill was fired up, beers where cracked, all the talk leading up to the fight was finished and then "Ding" goes the bell and "1,2,3" it's over! We were in utter shock. We hadn't even put the hotdogs on the grill yet. I hadn't even finished my first beer and it was over! After the third one of those party's, it all kind of faded LOL. Mike Tyson in his prime was AMAZING!

I remember watching that Tyson/Douglass fight when I was younger....I remember Tyson knocking Douglass down, and the counter reaching 10 before the ref did before Tyson was knocked down. That was a big deal for literally a minute.,...then, it went away really fast, and they switched to watching the official count on Mike. I was younger and do not remember every detail...but, I sure remember the world being shocked...Hell, we were shocked as kids to watch the guy we saw destroy everyone get counted down. I do not think boxing has been anywhere near as big a national sport since that era, and prior. For some reason the guys that came later were either not as marketable, or something...even before MMA and UFC kinda took the top spot...there was a gap left in combat sports in the in-between time frame.

Tyson used to fuck some guy up then rush over after the fight and help him up and congratulate him and his corner and had real sportsmanship. After Don King became heavily involved in his career that he became a different fighter... he was never the same. I would 100% put him up against ANY boxer ever, with both in their prime. Not only in his punching power, BUT in his movement, defense, ability to throw from multiple angles in a short time, and something no one gives him credit for because of all his first round knockouts, but he had a decent jaw also. He was a well rounded fighter with great offensive talent. He's known for the one big punch, but he was so much more in his prime.
