Thank you for your reaction! Your Kansas reactions are high caliber. Kansas imo seems to be under valued by the critics. Their syncopate sound was and is distinct and well rehearsed. Their influence has reached those from Garth Brooks to Dream Theatre. Hopelessly Human has that Oriental groove. Take a listen.

(rough quote) "...and so to convince the prince that he must do his duty, the god took on his multi-armed form and said, 'Behold, I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds..." This is a song about embracing fate and accepting the burden of what must be done, to carry on until the question is resolved. It is not even so much about war, but more about recognizing the commission of what we are and pursuing what that makes of us.
By fulfilling our destiny, we find a kind of peace when we are done. It is by focusing upon a purpose that our own self is realized. Whether that purpose is to be called good or bad is a matter of history, when all has settled. In the moment, however, we can only be what we are: blind fools stumbling about in the dark, hoping to reveal some greater meaning.
In the book of Ecclesiastes, it is said, "All the works of man are a vanity." Nonetheless, it is only by our works that we can be judged. Let us hope that we pass the test of what it means to be us.

Was my first concert when I was 13 ... Havent seen any concert videos of Kansas for 45years... Gave me Goosebumps as now I truly listen to the lyrics and so many classic rock bands I've seen in concert and became my hobby as well as a mood lifter and a connection to my soul... If I cant feel the music ...I don't much like it..deep lyrics written as poetry ...I love when my favorite music, most 70's 80's ..I feel blessed that my era had THE BEST MUSIC ,HANDS DOWN! SOME 90'S But then these grungy bands surface .. mostly alot of obnoxious crap... some exceptions of course... and the hair band all sound the same ,cheesy...
Unfortunately this generation is a joke...noise, vulgar.. they dont even play an instrument... turn up the bass on the speakers till the thump..oh that sounds great.. Music from my era were positive and rocked out with connection and we all could relate and enjoyed music with a stranger because the music brought positive vibes... Ok, this rap shit yaps about gangs ,,drugs ,sex ,moralizing women ,negative and look at the youth that listens and idolizes rappers ,gang ,mostly ruff and rebellious that kids want to idolize... at there live shows then dont care about the other people ,they will trample to death a young kid with no regard... I cant stand it and they are clueless to knowing good music...

The song is about an out of control rebellious young person who already thinks he knows everything but in reality is wet behind the ears and is clueless about reality and I'm guessing also used drugs one time too many and either died or almost died. Back in the day young people used drugs to try to gain knowledge only to find out it was just destroying them.
