    It's amazing how three guys can produce so much sound! In this song the Tom Sawyer character (perhaps loosely based on the book character) is a modern-day rebel character. Here is some more information about Rush: All three are considered virtuoso-level musicians. The lead singer, Geddy Lee, is also the bass player and keyboard player. He and the guitarist, Alex Lifeson, first met in junior high school, and have been best friends ever since. When Rush's first album came out in 1974, they had a different drummer, who left the band shortly after that. Neil Peart became Rush's drummer in July of 1974. Since he loved to read, Geddy and Alex asked him if he wanted to write lyrics, which he agreed to do. All three guys became the best of friends over a 40-year career. Sadly, Neil had a number of tragedies in his life: In 1997, his 19-year-old daughter died in a car accident. Less than one year later, his wife died of cancer. Grief-stricken, Neil took to the road, riding his motorcycle all over the world while he grieved. Rush was on hold during this time, as the other two weren't sure Neil would return. Eventually, Neil did return to the band, in 2002. He remarried and became the father of a daughter. Rush enjoyed this later part of their career, but in 2015, Neil decided to retire. Sadly, in 2016, Neil was diagnosed with brain cancer. He died in January 2020. Since that time, Geddy and Alex have only performed in public 4 times, all for tribute concerts. They remain best friends. Geddy wrote a memoir last year. For a future reaction, I suggest the song 'Limelight.'

      @@weedlander haha I'm a new fan of the band, so I'm all in and can't stop listening to them, and watching music reactions is fun! You have to watch some live concert videos of them, too; they were amazing! For that, I suggest the song 'Between the Wheels' live from the R30 tour in Germany. Rush is known for playing complicated music with odd time signatures, and every album sounded different.

    Three master musicians from Canada. These guys had 19 studio albums over a 40 year run. They always push their own musical boundaries, incorporating new trends and new technology, so the sound you hear will reflect the decade. They never settled on formulas that brought past success. Try the song Freewill - it’s from the same period as this song. Cheers!

    Tom Sawyer is a character in a book by Mark Twain but here in this song it serves as a metaphor for a strong protagonist

  • @ChronicExcessiveManliness
    @ChronicExcessiveManliness Před měsícem +26

    Best band...ever.

  • @SnowDogisVictorious
    @SnowDogisVictorious Před měsícem +8

    You were right the first time; Mark Twain created two famous protagonist characters. The one you remembered was Huckleberry Finn. The other one was Tom Sawyer.
    The lyrics were very much metaphoric. The very first stanza sets that out:
    "A modern day warrior
    Mean, mean stride
    Today's Tom Sawyer
    Mean, mean pride."
    You've also hit on one of the key factors that made Rush one of the most revered bands of the last 50 years: the lyrics.
    You don't need to listen to the lyrics to love their music. In fact, I wouldn't even recommend trying to follow them the first time you hear one of their songs. They were oftentimes thoughtful and compelling, making the band very different from other rock bands.
    Indeed, that's one of the reasons Rush has usually been characterized as one of the seminal progressive rock bands of our day. They were even referred to as "the godfathers of progressive metal" when inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
    The drummer for this three-man power trio, Neil Peart, wrote the vast majority of the lyrics. He also wrote a half dozen books that reached the New York Times Best Sellers list - all with nothing more than some high school education. In other words, he was a brilliant autodidact who always had books and a notepad with him.
    Oh, and he's widely considered to have been one of the best, if not the very best, drummers of all time. Ever those who don't rank him as the greatest of all time will have him in their top 3 or 5, as there's really no reasonable argument that he wasn't at least the most technically proficient drummer ever.
    PS - The other two members of Rush, Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, and keyboards) and Alex Lifeson (lead and rhythm guitar) are also widely considered to have been among the very best musicians for their chosen instrument(s) - which arguably makes Rush a musical miracle (how could three virtuosic musicians have come out of the greater Toronto region at the same time, much less to have formed a single group?). We're all fortunate to have had the opportunity to hear them for over forty years together.
    PPS - Peart died of brain cancer (Glioblastoma) in January 2020, so Rush is sadly very much in the past now.

Or at least how I would take it just a guess on my part, only Neil could tell you for sure since he wrote most of the lyrics. Sadly he is no longer with us. RIP

    Hey, did you ever hear of the great author Mark Twain‘s book called “Tom Sawyer“. It’s a very good book, check it out you might like it.
    It’s a great time capsule of what America was like 170 years ago.
    It’s a book about a boy named Tom Sawyer, and he runs away from home and has adventures in the pre-Civil War American south.
    Tom Sawyer was a crafty cool character in that book, and Rush wrote this song about what they thought a modern version of Tom Sawyer would be.
    Nice reaction. Thanks!
