  • This was a musical extravaganza. Something quite different from Boston. Reminded Savio of ELP and few other older rock bands.

Foreplay/Long Time is one of those songs that when it starts playing on the stereo in your car, it makes responsible drivers that normally drive 65mph look at their speedometers and realize the awesomeness of this song caused them to be cruising down the highway at 96mph. Every song on Boston's debut album still gets played on classic rock radio stations in heavy rotation. Each song on the album is just a little bit better than the song that preceded it. The album is a timeless masterpiece!
RIP Brad Delp (the lead singer)

Peace of Mind is my favorite song from Boston. But their entire debut album is phenomenal. If I were you folks, I’d pick a Boston song from their debut album every week to react to till you’ve reacted to them all. You’ll likely be impressed by all of them.

This was Boston! This was the 70's! This was an American delight! One of the best acts in town! I am grateful for growing up when I did although if I had my choice I would have been a teenager in the 70's. The band's back then were incredible! I'm so glad I grew up in a time when all these bands were still known to the youth.

Some how they combined the melodic sense and harmonies of the Beatles with the bombastic dynamism of Zeppelin. Amazing! And it was a huge plus that Tom Schulz found Brad Delp a Singer with an Operatic Vocal Range who could hit high notes like no one else could. It must have been Fate because combined they created something special and original. Sheer Genius! Those first two Boston albums are still classic Hard Rock! Sometimes the Fates are kind!

From Boston's 1976 debut album. Every song was top notch. The entire album was made up of the demo tapes that were recorded in Tom Scholz's basement by Tom Scholz himself. Tom Scholz was an MIT grad and was the lead guitarist....He played all the instruments on the demo tapes. Only Brad Delp added vocals. RIP Brad Delp and Sib Hashian...

Boston was my favorite band back in the day. This came out about 1976. Tom Schultz is the master mind behind the band. He has a masters degree in engineering from MIT and was working for Polaroid at the time. He invented the electronic device called the Rockman that gives the guitars that unique sound. He wrote all the songs on the first album. He then played all the instruments to each part and over dubbed them to make the complete album. Then got a guy to sing the lead. When the record label agreed to sign the contract they wanted to meet the band because the had to perform live shows to promote the record. They couldn’t believe he did the whole thing himself. So he got some recommend guys from Boston to form the band and named it Boston. It still hold the record for most break out albums sold ever at 15 million plus. Tom has replaced all the band threw out the years but stayed actively touring up till last year at 75 years old.

As a kid I had no idea what foreplay meant, the beginning of the song was simply the space guitars trip to Earth and longtime was them jamming upon arrival. In other words, this song was the musical representation of the album cover, which I'd stare at for hours on end while listening to this album 128 times the 1st week I got it. 30+ years later I still LOVE it.

To think, most of what you heard was an electrical engineer, alone in his basement. Sure, he had a friend come over and sing, and another do the drums. It wasn't like he'd never played in a band, but Tom Scholz was pretty much it. Putting together a band that could perform this music live, and sound near this clean raised the difficulty another magnitude of difficulty. Remember, this was in the days of analog; computers and music editing software, like Protools wasn't around. The musicians actually had to play whole songs.

    • @ThatsMrPencilneck2U
      @ThatsMrPencilneck2U Před 5 lety

@Kitten Katt Things weren't that primitive in the 1970's. You could cue up the tape to the point you needed, and record onto a new tape. There would be a little bit more noise from the media, but not much.
Then, that is a lot of trouble, when today, you can just grab a mouse, click on a segment of music, and move it to another part of the song. I image, with enough time on the computer, somebody could make the Shaggs sound professional.

loved this whole reaction. your analysis is always spot on.. that tune you are humming is originally from Tchaikovsky 'March' 1890 but has been covered by a couple of rock bands.

I knew you’d like this! Organized Madness! Good description but there is a method to Tom Scholzes madness! Ever hear the saying Genius is close to Madness? Many Geniuses are considered Madmen because other people don’t understand them or what they are trying to achieve. The classical organ piece you described is the March of the Wooden Toy soldiers by Tsaichovsky! It is reminiscent of that kind of but it’s still an original piece. To my ears it sounds like a classical organ piece by Bach or Beethoven. I’m not sure but it definitely has classical overtones. I really like it! Tom Sholz worked during the day at Polaroid inventing things and building a recording studio in his basement and recording music at night by himself! Plus he learned how play guitar and keyboards. People must of thought he was some kind of crazy hermit or something. But he knew how to play and record and compose and was all self taught apparently. The only thing he didn’t do was sing or play drums.
In the end, he succeeded big time and he was incredibly lucky to find a talented singer like Brad Delp in his city to complete the last piece of the puzzle!

I would have thought the same, that Boston has a long collaboration period for their music. But the truth is, everything in Boston comes from the mind of the guitarist, Tommy Scholz. He plans out everything, plays most of it to achieve what he has imagined, and then has other musicians follow his plans.

After brief investigation I found a band called Dagamba that plays rocked up versions of famous or at least notable classical movements. The fellow of this couple made reference to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker but in a rock format. I hope this is what you were making reference to- peace and be blessed.

Thank you for respecting the music that I grew up with. I want to know more about the music you came from. Please educate my ignorance. Seriously, I value your opinion.

To me you two prove music is universal language . Though it seems a lot of today’s music just doesn’t have the feeling and appeal of music from my time. I’m 64. Still , love to see you getting into it. Check out Heart at Kennedy Center Honors and there version of Stairway to Heaven.

14:34 I think the song that you are referring to is from Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker: Overture. 🙂 And if not, it's very similar to what you were voicing.

LMAO love your story about the title! It's good to get a fresh opinion from someone who wasn't here when the song was actually released, I think it's more honest.

That song that you, Savio, were humming sounds like "The nut rocker" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer(ELP) which again is lifted from a classical, symphonic piece, I think...

Isn't that song you were trying to think of originally from "The Nutcracker Suite"?
Possibly weaved into an Electric Light Orchestra song as well.
