“It’s great to be here in New Jersey” is the single greatest phrase ever to be uttered on SNL in the history of the entire show.
If you know anything about New Yorkers, thats the ultimate insult.
I love how Ian McKay is the one who got on the mic and says "New York sucks, fuck you!" What an awesome piece of punk history forever preserved on film.
I guess that was not in rehearsals.
Right before Ian you can hear John Brannon yell "NEGATIVE APPROACH IS GONNA FUCK YOU UP!!!"

The sax that Derf Scratch plays in New York's Alright is amazing. Such a GREAT album
Fun House by The Stooges, too
I remember in the mid 80's chatting some girl up, she said she liked sax music, I said I did too, she asked me to name a song, I said "New York is alright if you like saxaphones." I didn't get laid.
annoying haha, sounds about right, some girl "giving you the brush", as Derf Scratch said in the song on the 1st Fear LP. I bet she expected you to say someone dull & inoculous like Candy Dulfer. Derf's sax on N.Y.'s alright is so irritatingly brilliant, the kind of sound like metal scraping across metal, that empties a room quick the way Ornette Coleman's avant garde sax playing once did way back when. tension, friction, off-notes, great in how they tweak the ears uneasily.....

They were banned from SNL for this one haha, worth it.
They were actually banned because an audience member screamed "Fuck NY" into the mic after the second song. That's why the camera was cut during "Let's Have a War"; some mucky muck from NBC heard that and ordered the telecast to be aborted.
+Greg Holt (GregDiablo) That and the $10,000 or so in damages.
$200,000
No matter what the damages cost, losing your license to broadcast is much more expensive, so I'm sure NBC could care less about the pocket change and cared more about the "Fuck NY" comment.
In Lee Ving's interview, he says he actually screamed to the NY Post it was $400k then slammed the phone down.
I love how if you try to watch this episode on Netflix, this entire bit is cut out and they act like it never happened.
Lee Ving was a troll 30 years before it came Into vogue. "It's great to be here and be gay"....

I saw this on television as small child. For many years it was never played on reruns or anything and I just had this vague recollection of it. This is definitely my first exposure to hardcore. one thing about this spectacle. the drums are pounding, that bass drum is tight as hell.
A real historic moment in punk rock history. I love FEAR’s performance and how Donald Pleasence introduced them as I am a big fan of Halloween. R. I.P Donald and long live FEAR!
FEAR was a bunch of intellectual punks who partied at Philo Kramer & John Clancy's "Hell House" in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. One word defined Hell House - BEER! I knew Philo, John, & Derf Scratch pretty well - we used to jam together. They were gnarly kewel Val Punks - and very intelligent. Fear was the Mothers of Invention of Punk Rock. Shear genius.
Aw, you messed it up. Should've been "sheer!"
John recorded their first demo, which has recently been released on vinyl, thanks to Lee's somewhat newfound love affair with merchandising. Around ten years ago he asked me to mail him copies of the 30 or 40 FEAR live recordings in my collection as he wanted to put a compilation together, promising to pay me back for the postage and send some signed records back as thanks. Somewhat unsurprisingly, he ended up doing neither. Ah well!
If you haven't seen Get Crazy seek it out.
Yeah since it takes a genius to scream and play power chords
They had actual talent, just tried to hide it!
Amazingly tight band...always the top of the line...This is Punk in the 80's. It will never be duplicated!
They should've aired this for the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary. That would've been epic, especially since this was when John Belushi hosted the show after leaving as a permanent cast member.
lowendtheorystudios This would have maybe been the only reason to even watch the anniversary show. Epic.
+lowendtheorystudios No, Belushi didn't host this one. However, it was his final appearance on SNL. The producers had Donald Pleasence hosting because it was October 31st and he was promoting Halloween II. The year before, Christopher Lee had been on the Halloween episode and it drew record numbers for the show. So the producers were hoping to repeat the success.
I agree about the 40th anniversary. In fact, I thought they would show the clips from it. This episode hasn't never been re-aired in its entirety. In addition to the FEAR incident, there were a bunch of bizarre skits written by Michael O'Donaghue that were deemed unsuitable for television.
Well, it looks like Belushi shared some of his Bolivian marching powder with Donald Pleasance at least. Maybe a lot.
Doctor Loomis himself introducing FEAR is one of the most awesome things I've ever seen. It's like 2 world's colliding of my favorite things.

It's great to be here in New Jersey
Los Angeles was hands down the best scene in hardcore In the early 80s no denying it, the southern California suburbs and beaches were breeding grounds for the ideal American punker, young, middle class, bored and frustrated.
+FuckPunkers Agree completely. I was part of the scene here in Texas (we held our own, MDC, The Dicks, DRI, Stickmen with Rayguns, Butthole Surfers, etc. The latter not hardcore, but still pretty bad-ass. However, combine the Texas scene with NYC, Phoneix, SF/Oakland, and it could not hold a candle to LA. I toured with Black Flag 84, and Descendants in 85 (I know Stevenson)so got to see different cities. Basically a city had a scene or it did not. Of course Black Flag always claimed Redando Beach. I saw FEAR many times. They were influenced by Texas Punk. Just like X was. We took what was coming from that NY/HC scene (Agnostic Front, Beastie Boys - yes, them - and do what we always do. Gave it some swagger. ;-) Like we do with everything here, we took it and gave it swagger. Damn, I was young...I was living in JFAs bus when I was 16. I don't know what I would do without punk , I honestly think id be dead or have some kinda cancer shit. LA was the shit back then but at the same time there were soo many "punks for a month" that it was becoming really lame , it made me want to punch and kick people so me and a buddy shaved our heads ,invested in some Docs and red suspenders and went to work. I am not proud to admit it but me and my friends were part of the reason punk took a short shit for a few years ( no more clubs ,no more shows, black flag going arena rock and shit bands like fugazi .. it was dark times let me tell you).
anyway fuckin FEAR is all right. CIRCLE ONE!
I'd have to say Utah is more of an ideal place for a hardcore scene to develop. Growing up in a state ruled by a backwards conservative religion is an ideal place for kids to rebel against the authority that pushed so many of us around.
NY hardcore scene was 1000 better than LA, whereas a bunch of rich kids posing to be punk.

If I had a time machine this would be the first place I would go over and over
Keep coming back to this
I remember that night well, quite possibly the greatest musical performance on SNL ever. I was 15 and from that moment on until this very day I was a hard core fan. FEAR! FEAR!FEAR!
What's interesting to note is FEAR had yet to release any official album yet. Their debut album only came out the following year and they already had such an intense reputation. I guess these were the days of tape trading of bootlegs..
WOW!! BEFORE they'd released their album?! DAYUM! John Belushi had a lot of pull back then, WOO-HOOOOO!
Nothing will ever be as good as this was, ever again. Nothing!!!
I watch this whenever I'm sad. Instant happy!
With everything that's going on, the musicianship is pretty good.
How fucking AWESOME is it to have Dr. fucking LOOMIS introducing FEAR on SNL. I would fucking LOVE to be in the mosh pit with good old Donald. Lee Ving and FEAR are REAL punk.
Punk rockers don't "mosh."
They slam-dance.
@@iamciril They used to, anyway.
