A little tip for the grips that I got from GCN is: lift the end of the handlebar (one close to shifters) with a little screwdriver and squirt some water with dish soap. Then try twisting. Repeat underneath if needed. I can't stress enough how well this works, even on the very old bikes I was restoring where grips were truly stuck.

I built a class 4 ebike about 8 months ago. That means I have no PAS system. I do 30mph with ease. I can go well over 30 under the right conditions. Keep in mind, just because I can go that fast doesn’t mean I always do. I have and do push the limits of my bike often, that does mean I take mountain gravel roads and trails that dirt bikes are on. I also have had multiple problems come up and had to learn a ton about every component involved. Ive had to find answers to problems even the experts that sell and work on the expensive ebikes don’t know the answer to. I’ve had to learn the hard way, many times those same people have been completely wrong. It seems they always advise the most expensive way to find and fix the problem first, even if they aren’t going to be making any money out of it.
At this point the only original parts from when i began this journey are my battery and my motor.
I began watching this video to see if there was one component missed, and there is.
Not long into the video you see him put the disk break directly onto the motor hub. I did the same as it seems no one has taken into consideration one result of this. When you’re going down a steep hill or slowing down from higher speeds that disk break is going to get hot. Extremely hot. In turn that disk break is going to make your motor hub hot too. And as you work the motor going up it stays hot and back and fourth. This heat, I now believe can travel from that disk break, make the motor hotter than it would be, and follow the power lines, all of them, back to the controller, and even into the throttle.
There is a plastic connector for the 5/6 wire connection of the hall connection and such. I’ve melted that twice. I had melted it the first time and had a ebike shop fix it for me. They told me I had been taxing the battery too much going up hill. Unknown to me they replaced it with the same part than wrapped it in a bike inner tube and made it look like it had been heat shrunken. I was pretty mad when it melted again. There’s more to that but I digress.
I fixed that by hard wiring that connection and insulating it. No plastic to melt.
I rode very hard on some mountain passes yesterday. My throttle went out for the second time, but I wasn’t aware of it until this morning. I took both thumb throttles apart. The wires were broken in the same spot in both. Either the wires are arcing. Or my theory about heat building up through the wires as a result of the disk break getting hot. Or. As a 3rd very real possibility, the parts are just made cheep. I did some research and found that the throttle I payed $37 for 2 times. Is sold on the web for $7. Just sold under a different name. I have what that store called a beefier throttle now, and my bike is running, they gave me this throttle for free. I’m not hopeful it will last and plan to replace it.
My plan is to go to a scooter or motorcycle shop and find a heat gasket to put in between the motor and the disk break. No idea if it will help. But I hope so. Let me know what you think or if you have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Don’t leave parallel-connected batteries connected permanently. Inevitably you get a weak cell, which causes the strong battery to discharge itself into the weak one. The way to get around this i s to introduce a charge-bus, and discharge bus, and isolate each battery between a pair of diodes, for each one. I use this technique in my yacht, with 8 12-volt, lead-acid, batteries. Don’t forget to use Schottky Diodes, since there’s a potential 1.2 v drop across each diode, under high-current conditions. Cheers, Robin.

I can see a lot of e-bike riders ending up in hospital with power
assist bikes when travelling at more than 25 MPH. THEN our lazy
legislators WILL ban E-BIKES or KEEP current ridiculous speed limits.
Politicians are too lazy to introduce sensible laws for e-bikes.
E-bikes need a speed limit of about 40 to 45 MPH so they are able to
keep in the flow of normal motorised traffic flow. ESPECIALLY ON
HILLS where an e-biker limited power to 15 MPH, is going to be
reduced to 5 MPH up hills IS going to be in a POTENTIONALLY DANGEROUS
situation given the impatient, inconsiderate average motorist.
Motorist are too stupid, too lazy or too fat to use e-bikes for local
journeys. Politicians and most car drivers are too stupid to realise
that the e-bikes WILL solve traffic congestion AND traffic pollution.
THEY HATE CYLISTS ! EVEN THOUGH RIDING A BIKE IS UNCLUTERING THE
      ROADS AND PARKING SPACES.
Imagine our cities where 90% of us are commuting across town by e-bike or
e-biking to and from the train station. Trains can be easily adapted
as necessary. Pollution levels and the gorgeous whether would return
to the levels we all enjoyed during the Coronavirus lock down.
Pitifully Obvious - unless you are a dumb politician. E-BIKE REGULATIONS NEED TO BE UPDATED.
SCREEM, SHOUT and E-MAILS TO JOURNALIST - POLITICIANS AND MOTORIST. (
ie your mum and dad ) TOXINS from ever increasing motor vehicle use
are poisoning us and our children. All of us are wasting thousands
hours of valuable time in unproductive traffic congestion. The e-bike
      - tandem e-bikes - e bike trailers for the kids and shopping is our
      likely salvation !
E-bikes need regulations if they are to become the most popular form of
commuter vehicle. Unfortunately Registration plates insurance and
construction regulations for safety, similar to mop-heads will have
to be adapted. Hub motors are too unstable at speeds above 30 MPH -
Mid drive compulsory - Rim brakes wear out rapidly on faster e-bikes and are therefore dangerous
      - disc brakes should be compulsory for e-bikes - Compulsory -e-bike battery
detachable to prevent theft and for recharging at work
or destination with employers require by law to facilitate. Lockable
      anti-theft tracker system - compulsory.
Speed limited by law to 45 MPH but with enough power to maintain that
speed up most hills. Motorway lanes adapted and progressively widened to provide 45 MPH e-bike and
e-recumbent bikes/trikes lanes where riders are three or four abreast
from initially using only the emergency vehicle access lane. Truck
lane 55 mph and car lanes 70 MPH.
In Life the sensible are handicapped by the imbeciles. The most common
accidents on motor bikes occurs when folks pull out in front of an
approaching motor bike because the driver didn't see the motor bike
which of course is bigger than an e-bike. I would strongly suggest
fitting a LED head light which can be set higher in daylight
preferably with a yellow cover to help the drivers see you
approaching the junction. Bear in mind older drivers have poorer
eyesight and much slower reactions. It's not much help being in the
right if your dead. At night remove the coloured lens cover and lower
the beam. We all need to scream at our idiot leaders in all countries
to adjust legislation to make e-bikes more popular. The Laws in the
UK are ridiculous. Most reasonably fit riders can easily exceed the
15 MPH limit without power assist but the same rider travelling above
15 MPH on a e-bike fitted with power assist EVEN if the power assist
is not being engaged WILL BE BREAKING THE LAW. Failing to registrar
the bike as a motor vehicle - no registration plate - no insurance -
no motor vehicle lighting regulations - not wearing a full motor bike
helmet etc................... Please copy and paste everywhere !

    • @MrDegsy69
      @MrDegsy69 Před 3 lety

Jeff J the centrelock rotor is a shimano patent and requires a splined centrelock compatible hub to reuse it. He had to buy a new rotor as the motor hub utilises the standard 6 bolt rotor fixing method on the hub flange boss. What concerned me most were the tight clearances on the fork and the need for spacing shims to pack it out. Something was not ISO standard here and i suspect it was the suspension fork on the donor bike. It would have been less of problem with a rigid road fork as the fork blades would have been narrower.

9:45 Front derailleur height had me having HUGE issues to use all three the front gears. Too high, and it didn't shift properly, too low, and it rubbed. Deraileur hight is a MAYOR issue.

      @johnhoover249 Před 3 lety

My Trek 4500 is also very sensitive to derailleur height. Tolerance range is only about +/- 1mm for perfect and reliable shifting. This appears to be a show stopper unless I can get this fully researched or mocked up before I purchase.

A trick I learnt to get the tyre back on without levers is once you can get no further with your fingers, go back to the start and push the tyre down into the rim. You should then be able to get a bit more of your tyre over the rim. Repeat a few more times and it will just pop in.

You didn’t mention how the bike felt coming off the power and braking....you hadn’t fitted the brake sensors. The kit looks interesting but as others have mentioned on here, just what is the price? Swytch seem to want me to preorder and get a 50% discount for doing so, which is great but there’s no way I’m committing myself to an unknown cost!

    • @will4may175
      @will4may175 Před 2 lety +3

Yup, and a year later the website still says the same, and still no clue of the price, however I seen this same kit on Fully charged show and it's £1000, adjust to whatever currency you use, but WAY too expensive considering you can get a generic E-bike for half that.

I put an early canbus BionX back wheel on a Hasa mountain bike. Motor controller and torque sensing was built into the 250W hub, so as soon as you applied force to the pedals the motor gave the required response. I now have a new Hasa mountain bike with a Tong Sheng DZ2 250W crank motor with controller and torque sensor built in. It took some filing to get the TSDZ2 to fit the Hasa frame, but it's a great bike. You don't get regeneration with a crank motor, but it's more efficient to coast as fast as possible down hills, but I do miss saving my disk pads and charging my battery when braking. Regeneration is also good for very steep descents on tarmac.

The disc looks like it’s a center lock. You should be able to remove it with a cassette removal tool, but that doesn’t help if the new wheel isn’t also a center lock style to mount it.

Good to see you back you’ve been missed. I own a Swytch kit got mine last February the handlebar mounted battery case is twice as large as yours though they claim similar battery range, maybe you
Could give some detail of what batteries there using and other ways they managed to reduce the size and weight. Swytch claim it will fit any bike but in reality you do need at least some diy skills but that’s
Been the fun as i managed to fit this kit to my tandem cycle and yes it works which I find amazing for
Such a small wheel. I did manage to brake a spoke and had to true the wheel but this motor on a tandem two people plus panniers probably at its limit certainly takes the sting out of the hills.
There is a forum on Facebook where people get to air there views about all things Swytch which may be of use to you. Take care get well soon look forward to seeing more content from you.

Thax if you have v brakes, adjust the small screws tighter to bring that side away from the wheel. If that not enough you can Bend the spring back a little. For disk brakes loosen the brake and pill the lever before tightening again. If it's mechanical do the same but don't tighten all the way and move to into position first.
