  • Instagram nutrition is a scary place where people post things that are sketchy as all hell and gain a following (cue ghosts wailing...). This is an example of how accounts just pop up as easily as toasting two pieces of bread, and how nutrition information is packaged and distributed without a second thought.

    I feel like intuitive eating is for people who always had and still have a healthy relationship with food. People who have suffered with any ED, people who are addicted to food, or even people who use food as emotional support will more than likely never fully recover if they continue eating “intuitively”

      Actually, intuitive eating came out of the ED movement. The whole point is to help people get past the "fear foods" that cause severe restriction. Basically the point they are trying to get across is that eating one cookie is not going to make you gain weight and you're not morally deficient because eating a cucumber/not eating all day led to you being hungry. The problem is that these women are talking only to people that fall into that category (recovering from restriction based ED or people with very disordered restricted eating). They are not making content for the food addict that is using two packs of cookies, a box of ice cream sandwiches and a whole pizza to fill an emotional hole. They're making content for the person that has literal anxiety about eating bread because they are afraid of getting fat.

    If we lived in an environment with all whole, natural, unprocessed foods, then yes, maybe eating intuitively would make sense. But we are surrounded by foods that are specifically engineered to trick the body into eating more. Our natural instincts to eat what's good for us have been subverted by food manufacturers. I mean, I like broccoli, but I've never *craved* it the way I've craved potato chips or ice cream. To me, if I feel like I *have* to have a particular food, or have trouble regulating my portion size, that's a red flag.

  • @CelesteBarbeau
    @CelesteBarbeau Před 5 lety +69

    When I first heard of intuitive eating (years ago) it was more about learning the difference between emotional eating and actual hunger. Getting a sense of when your actually full and to stop eating when you are, as opposed to mindless eating, so not eating while watching TV, or distractions. It's all about feeding your body what it ACTUALLY needs, and not what your emotions want. This way of eating helped my sister overcome her eating disorder, and she now has a much healthier relationship with food.
    The way it's used now just seems totally off...

I thought it was absolute bullshit when I first heard it, as in my mind everyone has the intuition to eat for the most part and it's just a matter of the type of food you eat. I am all for intuitive eating, but like you said, it dies not work for someone with a food addiction or an eating disorder. When I was anorexic, I intuitively eat nothing.
    And if you eat intuitively, how about intuitively eating real food instead of crap?

    • @patriciae3082
      @patriciae3082 Před 5 lety +6

      Intuition and emotion are not the same thing. Intuition was the feeling that told you you were hungry. Emotions were the things that told you not to eat. By not eating, you were going against your intuition and allowing other factors to guide what you did. If you know that eating a box of donuts makes you feel like crap, and you do it anyway, you're going against your intuition and following your emotions. If you know that eating one donut today will stop you from gorging yourself later, you're following your intuition. I don't think that this works for food addicts, but I think it can work for people with anxiety about eating.

      @patriciae3082 Před 5 lety +1

      @@claudiaglows I totally agree. I commented to someone else earlier, that intuitive eating is really more for people that restrict. Likely not as effective for a food addict that is overeating to fill an emotional void. But I do think that addicts can go more towards the mindful eating end of the scale where they are really focusing on how the food makes them feel, physical versus emotional hunger, etc. Intuitive won't work for everyone. @@clintanthony1779 I mean, intuitive eating isn't possible for people who have screwed up their food intuition (with an eating disorder for example), so they would need to track. And tracking isn't always possible for people who have an unhealthy relationship with food. So everyone might have to approach the situation differently but the gist is the same. If you eat at a caloric surplus you WILL gain weight, and if you eat at a deficit you will lose it. I don't know that intuitive eating is an 'out' because brains have told us how much to eat long before tracking methods were invented. I think it can be very situational...? Learning to be more intuitive, helped me break the being “too restrictive” diet. But in combo of learning how to healthfully “count” nutritional intake so I know I’m getting proper calories in (I’m a competitive athlete). I’m okay with a certain amount of emotional eating... good food can be very emotional! As someone who was raised in European household, enjoying tasty food/cooking together, not just seeing food as fuel, was all part of the social experience... I don’t think even all negative emotionally eating is bad. Finding comfort in a warm stew after a heartbreak.... eating fresh baked bread that reminds you of your mother who just passed away, etc, I don’t think is all wrong. But I do see overdoing it can be harmful, as it seems to me it becomes self destructive, and beyond the means of part of the mourning process. Obviously, there’s the opposite side of the spectrum of people who are food addicted, and intuitive eating can be difficult, because what these people need are guidelines and therapy (sugar rehabilitation anyone??)! I dunno... what are your guys’ thoughts?

While I find merit in the idea of feeding ourselves, I have suffered the consequences of severe restriction even when I was also binge eating. I also see where these channels are falsely conflating their own diet ideologies about "whole foods" paleo and keto diets with what these diets actually are. People need help feeding themselves properly with meat, fat, veggies, fruit etc. And that will eventually allow them to have appetite regulation, not encouraging eating boxes of donuts and twinkies, and claiming that somehow equals health. That is the message you seem to be sending. Thank you for speaking out, I was going a little nuts in my own head😝

    I am 68, and I am dealing with decades of listening to bad information about diet and nutrition, so this makes me mad too. I went through sugar free periods, and other periods that weren't sugar free. The non sugar free periods were my fault of course, because I DID know better.
    In my case, it was never about food addiction or eating massive amounts, or binge eating, because I never ate that much. I never got anywhere near as big as some of these people, either. I never got up to 250 pounds, thankfully. The problem was that even when I thought I was doing everything right, I was still eating bread, and potatoes and pasta, and occasionally sugar, and milk.
    I only cut out bread and potatoes about two years ago. I never ate that much fast food. It was just an occasional treat, except for during my homeless periods when I didn't have access to a kitchen. Actually, I have had a few fat periods which add up to LESS THAN a third of my life. The rest of the time, I have been thin. Thin is DEFINITELY better.
    It does get harder when you get older, after decades of eating the wrong things. The damage is cumulative. Reversing it is not impossible...I hope, but it is much more stubborn than when I was younger. That is why this fat acceptance bullshit makes me so angry. They are perpetuating bad eating habits in young people who haven't yet damaged their bodies as much. It will catch up with them and they will regret it...if they even live long enough.
    I am not nearly as metabolically sick as some of them will be, because I have never been as big. I can't understand how they can be so proud of it. Way down deep, I don't think they truly are. I think they are just jealous and don't want to take the responsibility. Over the decades, I read lots of books on nutrition.
    There was a lot of good information out there, but the good information was pretty marginalized. The official dietary guidelines were the most misleading at all. I didn't fall for all of it, but I did apparently fall for a little of it, because even when I was thin, I didn't always eat perfect. I can't remember exactly when I stopped eating margarine, but it was a REALLY long time ago. The same with omega six industrial seed oils. I stopped using them decades ago. I went through a short period in which I switched from milk to almond milk, and two of my molars rotted out of my head, and had to be removed. I went back to milk. I haven't had any milk in over a month because I think I drink too much, and it contributes to my weight. I really miss it though. I am getting used to not eating bread, but I missed that for a really long time. Certain foods can be doing harm to a person's body while they are young, and because they are young, they may think they are fine with it, because they don't see the effects yet. Sometimes it takes decades for the effects to become apparent.

    Intuitive eating is for very few. It does not help the masses considering what's happening with the population. I was over weight and I've been under weight, do you think that Intuitive eating was great for my health during this? NO. Only after doing my research, experiencing it myself and studying to get my nutrition specialist certification (not the same as a RD) did I get a better understanding on the foods I put into my body and their nutritional value.
    I believe we need an education system of some sort about nutrition being taught to our kids in school that way they will have a better understanding in later years and will have the knowledge to take better care of their health at least from the nutrition side of things.

    The companies are *expecting* people to eat intuitively. That's the way these foods are frickin' designed!
    I find that the foods I tend to crave (less and less) don't really taste "good". They instead trigger automated eating and a "Yum!" making it feel like a treat, making me feel better, thus wanting more.
    If I slow down and really taste these snacks and processed foods, they're all just fatty, salty, sweet and usually easy to eat fast as well as cheaper per unit in bigger portions:
    Cookies, hamburgers, hotdog, potato chips, ice cream, soda, sweets...
    They match peoples triggers. If you crave these food substitutes, eating intuitively is precisely what the companies are counting on.

    I agree with you for the most part. If someone has habitually been overeating, their stomach is so stretched out they'd still eat massive quantities of food. And without people learning quality nutrition and working hard on that, they will intuitively eat a whole pizza and an order of wings. Dieticians need to be careful about the information they give out. People need to know, biases aside, that a donut contains a shitton of sugar and calories and things that won't serve your body. They're making it look like you can eat junk whenever you want, however much you want.
    That being said...
    Intuitive eating has a place. When done correctly, with a dietician that cares about nutrition and health. At one point in my life, I was totally ignoring my body's hunger cues and overly restricting. Both in calories and the types of foods (as in, not letting myself have red meat, etc.). I was damaging myself. Intuitive eating helped me come back and learn to eat when I'm genuinely hungry. I incorporate mindfulness and I pay attention to how my body feels after certain foods, which leads me to choose mostly whole foods. My body feels better when I eat fresh, home cooked foods with a good balance of nutrients. And I pay attention to the emotional cravings - I know my mind is telling me I want Doritos, but I know my body will feel sick afterwards. I fully acknowledge that this would not work for everyone, or most of the American population. But, *done correctly* it helped me get healthy again.

I cannot handle intuitive eating right now and when i hear about it i kinda laugh to myself. X.X best thing that has worked for me is just keeping fruit and veg in the house. 🤷‍♀️

    You could make an interesting video about the "nutritional experts" industry. There's also a big difference between a nutritionist and dietitian since one is regulated by a medical body the other (nutritionist) has no regulatory body so anyone can call themselves a nutritionist with no consequence.
    Even legit doctors schill for industries, under the pretense of having people's best interest at heart, who have put their trust in them.

    These Instagram accounts are not targeted to obese, food addicted people but rather to people, who are maybe in danger to form an eating disorder or are too strict to their lifestyle. What they're trying to say is it is ok to sometimes enjoy a burger and it won't ruin your body.
    Yes there are extremes as there are in everything but the main idea here is positive.

    With 25 years of EDNOS in my youth I will never be able to intuitively eat. I track daily. It takes this to get me to eat. I’m now extremely healthy and a normal weight. I finally had a child at 40 after being infertile my whole adulthood. I tend to have too many thoughts about food and I do have an obsession with my daily workout. Is this great? No. But I eat now and it stays in my body. It’s probably as good as it’s going to get. If I intuitively ate I would never stop. Not with my history and issues.

I saw her video on Gabbie Hanna, which basically involved her scolding Gabbie for using “pro-diet culture language”, giving out half-baked advice on eating intuitively, and arguing that ice cream, cookies, etc can’t even be called junk food because it gives them a negative connotation 😒

    I can eat intuitively as long as there are no carbs involved. I can’t force myself to eat more than half a steak with a little salt.
    If there are veggies and a sauce, I can eat the whole steak.
    If I have a slice of bread, intuitive eating is over for me. I start having cravings, and I usually end up eating dessert as well. I don’t feel good after.
    It has taken me months to get used to the idea that skipping dessert isn’t the worst thing in the world. This is an addict’s mentality.

    Sorry peoples. But civilization has advanced quickly for the first world. Our bodies are still wired to intuitively eat as a hunter-gatherer. We haven't physically evolved to deal with abundance of hyperpalatables yet. There are some signs we as a species are evolving to cope. Mutations are cropping up, and some of them seem to be as a result of the influx of fats, sugars, and artificial chemicals in our diets.
    A heart mutation which makes having a myocardial infarction (heart attack) much harder even if the person has high LDL/low HDL has been found, as well as one that makes a stroke less likely as well.
    Liver mutations have been found that helps people remove toxins far more efficiently without having to pump out a huge amount of liver enzymes (I actually have this mutation).
    It's a start but for the next few millenia, maaaaaybe sooner, we have to watch what we eat. Hopefully our bodies will evolve and adapt accordingly.

    I intuitively ate myself into morbid obesity and I now have a body that hurts all the damn time, that's swollen all the time, one that has zero flexibility and no real strength and I feel like a worthless, unproductive waste of space - are these people really going to tell me that choosing to restrict myself to a recommended serving of Doritos (20 chips) as a snack is a sham when my brain is begging to have the whole freakin' bag for dinner and gives me all the justifications in the world why it's okay?
    As others have said, Intuitive Eating is probably fine for people who already have healthy relationships with food or as encouragement for those who are afraid to eat anything; but considering that the population is getting fatter, Intuitive Eating is probably not the best message to promote right now, not in the way it's currently being presented. It's just another way to force Acceptance into a society that wants to disregard Responsibility and Accountability as values.

    I find the idea that you keep lots of junk food in the house as a way to not eat it ludicrous. I would say I do intuitive eating - but that only works because I don't keep things in the house which I know I can binge on without knowing. I've never been overweight, but I would be if there were always biscuits in my house. No question. I eat them without noticing.
    Mindful food shopping is what allows me to intuitively eat when I'm at home.

I also believe u have to track to some extent if u would also like to be in a caloric defecit. Even if its minimally.

    Yeah, I have a poor relationship with food. I was fat, really fat, 4 years to lose the weight and get in shape. Got curious 2 months ago to stop calorie counting and just eat "intuitively" and just go by memory what I should be eating. Guess what? I gained weight in 2 months! 🤬 I'm a fat fuck! I can't trust myself to eat without tracking. So I'm back to tracking my food. Intuitive eating does not work if you have had a lifetime of poor eating habbits. 🙄 So the whole "intuitive eating" movement should clearly specify, "if you're a fat fuck, or been a fat fuck, DON'T INTUITIVELY EAT!"
