Why I'm So Bothered By Sam Ash Closing In Atlanta

- I had a feeling this was going to happen sooner than later, but I must say that I'm sad to know that Sam Ash is closing their store here in Atlanta. I feel like musicians are losing their community piece by piece every time another music store closes. I really hope we don't go completely online to buy instruments.

Worked here in guitars from april 2019 to 2020. My first music job!
Ken Stanton was also the first store I went to. A friend also owned Ponier Music but they got bought by someone. I wonder if fewer people are getting into music or if more people are just shopping online. Definitely sad to see places close down like this.
Doug Ponier had a cool store back around 15 years ago. He was always doing cool functions too, promoting local musicians at his place.
It's probably a healthy mix of both. music is different, how it's promoted is different and how we buy gear is certainly different now. Sad situation.
Music and Arts bought all Ken Stanton stores. The ones in Marietta are still stocked with great stuff…I really liked Ken Stanton, though. They had been in ATL since 1949. There are still a lot of music stores around the metro ATL area, especially when compared to other towns across the US. I’m still bummed to see such an iconic chain closing its doors…They just announced today that ALL Sam Ash stores are closing. That sucks.
I wonder if it's worth considering something similar to tariffs to equalize the playing field between brick-and-mortar stores, and online stores who have a tremendous advantage by not having the expensive overhead.
sad to see so many music stores closing, I'm in Houston, and some long term music stores here closed
I'm sorry to hear the situation is same for the music stores in Houston. I haven't been to Houston since I was a really young. I hope to get back out there some day.
@@progrockjock too much traffic and crime here, try Austin instead, Fuller's Guitars here is last really great store for gear, most of clubs are gone too, sad -- musicians need place to play
Oh, man - I LOVE Austin!! I performed on the small stage at Stubb's eons ago during SXSW. I always tell people Texas contains my 2 of my favorite airports -- AUS and DFW. Hopefully, I'll get to check out Fuller's Guitars someday. I agree, we all need a place to play and talk shop too!
Just found out today😢
Very sad indeed. Similar story in rhe UK. I must admit, it's been 12 years or more since I bought any strings from a shop . Much cheaper online. Last time a bought a new bass from a store was 1997 when I bought my first Stingray.
I'm in a similar boat as you. I recently bought new strings for the ATK, J-Bass & P-bass but only after nearly a 20-year hiatus from doing so. Even in the studio, I was asked to leave my old strings on the P-bass. My last instrument purchased from Sam Ash was the Ken Smith 6-string back in 1998, which I sold in 2004 for $1,900. It's unbelievable what those basses yield now.
@@progrockjock ha yes, I think I may have mention before the Wal Mk1 bass that I traded in for stuff I don't really remember what.
Would be worth £8k-10k now!! Ouch 😅
Oh, I do remember you telling me this!! At least you had one for a bit. I've always wanted one of those basses and yes, they bring in way more money than a Ken Smith.
You were the first person I thought of when I heard they some of their stores are closing. I feel for you.
I like my store just because it’s a place to go that isn’t work. In the winter it’s work, gym, or home and that’s really about it for me. So having a guitar shop really just gives me a place to go.
That means a lot! I'll be ok, though. There's still Guitar Center. There's a lot of mom & pop stores around the state but Sam Ash was like large family location that didn't bug you about buying something every time you go in there. Now, I do wish I had grabbed that Ric but I'm honestly over it. It's really time to thin the herd.
I hope all is well with you!
All Sam Ash stores will be closing now.
The end of an era. Thanks for informing me.
Both Illinois stroes going too 😮
I'm sorry to hear that! So sad.
Is this a result of online buying? Out here in Oregon, I grew up around a neighborhood and had a place named "Tombstone Music".
Probably so. I do feel guilty because while I did buy a Ken Smith from their Manhattan location in the late 90s, I don't recall buying anything from the Atlanta store. At the same time, I know I can't keep an entire music store afloat on my salary alone. "Tombstone Music" must be across from a cemetery, right?
@@progrockjock lol no an appartment complex.I had a loyalty though so its kinda like your favorite pub, or park, or church.
Ha! I understand. We have a bar/restaurant across the street from the Oakland Cemetery called "Six Feet Under". The crazy thing is all of the crime that has surrounded it since it was opened.
Are we just going into the plugin generation
It looks that way but for a while longer there will be traditionalists to keep things somewhat grounded.
in NYC is Manny's still around?
Manny's closed around 15 years ago. 48th was a sight to behold back in the mid to late 90s
@@progrockjock thanks for the update
You're welcome.
