- The original name for this folksong was 'Skewball.' It became popular in America as 'Stewball.' I've played this song for 35 years and now decided to record it. There have been many verses added and changed since it found it's way across the Atlantic from England. I recorded this in July of 2019.
The picking in this is beautiful. And those strings that come in during the second half - _gorgeous._
You know the tune almost sound just like "So this is Christmas"
Rite on
"In addition to these reappropriated elements, the chords and melodic structure of "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" are similar to the traditional English ballad "Skewball", but with a different rhythmic meter, subsequent modulations and a wholly new and different chorus countermelody. The verses of the song are closest in structure to the 1963 rendition (titled "Stewball") by Peter, Paul and Mary.[23]" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Xmas_(War_Is_Over)
Yes, Lennon and Oko simply wrote new lyrics for this old song. Their arrangement included standard things, like a modulation.
like my sweet lord and the black girl groups song...forgot the songs name
They should have been sued
Always one of my favorite songs ❤

Stunning. Just after finding your channel yesterday. Amazing musical abilities, with a wonderfully emotional, evocative voice.
Tom Roush died in 2021, sadly
@@jackcarter5101 so sad to hear that he has passed. Stunning voice, it has gravitas. Thanks for the info, Jack. Best regards.
Peter, Paul, and Mary had a recording of this vintage song which I always found wonderful. It’s on CZcams and believe me it’s worth listening to.
I've loved that song for 60 years. My grandmother rocked me to sleep to P,P,&M.
@@jz8805 Many years ago I saw them in a live performance in San Diego. They harmonized so beautifully, with great guitar playing by Peter and Paul and in their day were extremely popular. I had a 45 rpm of “Stewball” and I may still have it somewhere. I had a young man’s crush on Mary.
one of my favs as a young and aspiring folksinger back then ❤
One of my all time favorites.
As you are one of my favorites!!
we used to sing this at school and on the bus ride home in the 70s
Love to you Tom Rush from New York!
Dylan; I'm sorry but I'm not the once-popular Tom Rush. My name is Tom Roush.
I remember this from Joan Baez, when she was young, and her voice was as high and clear as a silver bell...
Reminds me of my daddy RIP RONKER
I cried listening to this today.Great rendition, and video of a great race!
I like how the first line of the song answers anyone wondering what the song title means

So... Beautiful...
Thank you, Elsa!
Sounding great Tom!
Thanks, Karen!!
I just listened to 4 versions of this song that I had only previously heard a friend singing. This is definitely the best version so far, and the most complete. Also the part about betting doesn't make sense unless he's talking about winning a trifecta he didn't bet. I used to show a horse named Stewball. He was a retired racehorse & great jumper. I had my own horses at the time ad well, but I'll always be grateful to the owner for letting me ride Stewball.
The betting part makes perfect sense. The second part of the song isn’t from one perspective, it’s from the perspective of all those who didn’t bet on Stewball. They’re saying the bet on the gray or the bay and that they lost because they didn’t bet on Stewball. It’s a perspective from a collective, not just one person.
BRAVO !!
"Happy Xmas" John Lennon. Geez, you learn something new everyday. Like when Jimmy Page ripped off Spirit in the name of Heaven. And, "My Sweet Lord", George, I'm starting to second guess you too now. But, RIP dead Beatles. You were in the right place at the right time. Tavistock Institute got a line on you.
Phenomenal
Lovely indeed🐎
Thank you!!!
Great Song!

🐎”YYYAAAAAAA”
Stewall was the name of the real Stewball, or Scewball.. Bath names refer to a horse with Piebald features, a pinto.
It seems like John Lennon copied this tune somewhat for "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)."
2:03 what instrument is that?
It is a harpsichord played on a keyboard.
"And so this is Christmas..." ~John Lennon? 😆
Christ is the ONLY WAY to heaven..
But a good horse & faith
To carry your weight
is the best way to travel
To God pearly gates ......
I thought John Lennon wrote this song?
He borrowed the tune
I bet $25 on a horse but it died about halfway around the track. How's that for bad luck?
John Lennon like it. Lol.
