This is the true story of the death by hanging of 25-year-old Scottish outlaw Jamie MacPherson in 1700. Jamie was born in 1675, the illegitimate son of a Highland laird and a beautiful gypsy girl. He became a man of great physical strength, an expert swordsman, as well as a renowned fiddler. But his career was robbery-his band led by a piper invading the markets. At his final armed robbery, a w...

The rhymes and rhythm of this sequel have that timeless and beautiful quality of the original, and though I loved the original's grieving yet positive tone and mood, I also find the more frustrated and sour expression of this one to be an interesting follow up. I can appreciate how it balances the feeling of someone's passing being disrespected and the bitterness of others misunderstanding the meaning of things they're not attached to, with the honest and nuanced conclusion of making peace with what can't be corrected. I could imagine the ending being the man getting rid of the wall-mounted clock too, and potentially also just getting another tall-case one, if it were in the hands of another writer, but I'm happy it didn't end that way. Though, I am aware that this song was purely fictional despite the original's origins as a true story, about a clock that is still around to this day. I find it more comforting that this isn't true-- as obviously this isn't a very happy ending-- but it still has artistic merit in itself as an alternate-history of sorts, and also the theme that can be inferred about special belongings and respect towards those who have passed away. Now I'm just wondering what an English version would sound with the additional lyrics that one of the Czech arrangements brought. I heard about that on the Wikipedia article I found this sequel through, it sounds interesting.

I cant get this song out of my head. I knew it when the few people who cared about me were still alive before they all passed and I know where the legend comes from as well. The head of the house was the only person only allowed to wind the clock in the 19th century. When they died that wad it. The clock stopped. Like life. 😔

I was barely familiar with only the chorus and not all of it, this is the first time I've heard the whole thing. I seem to recall hearing it in a cartoon or something as a child in the 60s, clearly a largely forgotten piece of musical history. So nice to find us here, just by wild happenstance I happen to think of it and here it is!

Love the song, good version. However, the Shenandoah in the song references the Oneida chief, and the Missouri River. I had heard this previously, and it causes the song to make sense (white man wants to marry Indian maiden). It is not about the Shenandoah River in VA/WV. I learned this recently when I googled the man Shenandoah and got nothing but when I googled the song and got into the Wikipedia page, the chief showed up, with the folk history of the song and a link to the chief.
