I wish we could of seen where music (if you can call it that) would be in this time. At the time it was great music but how could we know we would loose it. For a long time I thought it was just me that wanted that music back. It was a time like no other. But finding CZcams and reactors that are listening to it for the first time. Auto tune sucks because you don’t even have to sing good anymore to get hits. Soooooo many good bands

bucky468 Wrong, dude. That’s just idiotic. They aren’t massively influential like the Beatles, and they aren’t so bad that they’re worth bashing. Try learning more about music instead of getting so focused on hating one group who isn’t THAT important. Melodic rock sure as hell didn’t get killed by grunge.

I always go back to Broken Wings live at the Ritz 85. Man what perfection. I love the Choir Vocal swells from the synths , and Richards vocal performance especially the ending. This was a hit my Senior Year of High School, Autumn 85. I really believe this song years ago was truly associated as “80s” meaning it might have sounded dated in the 90s and early 2k . But 35 years later it truly has transcended. This is a song I don’t hear, I have to listen to it

Broken Wings is my favorite song of all time - it's magical the way the keys & guitar echo the melody, the way the synths sound like a heavenly choir, the way the drum processing is a perfect mix of analog & digital, the great bass line, of course, - all cherry-topped with Richard's Golden & Emotive Vocal. I was already a huge fan of Pages, and when I found out they had regrouped as Mister Mister, I nearly lost it with excitement that they had finally gotten the recognition they deserved/were put on the map! I had the great fortune of seeing Mister Mister in concert three times; two times at The Palace in Hollywood ('86/'87) right at the stage! - and one time at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles ('87). At The Palace, in between songs, I held my hand out to Richard to shake it, but he declined at first. I tried a couple more times and he finally reciprocated. He held on longer than I expected just looking down at me. Then, when the lights went out, I started to take my hand away but he gripped it tighter - to my utter surprise! When the lights came back up, he started to take his hand away and I gripped HIS tighter! (lol) Later on, after the show, I waited for them outside the building & got their autographs (except for Ferris - he was AWOL). I was so happy to be able to tell my musical heros in person how much I loved their music from Pages ("Two People" being the star), as well as Broken Wings & all the new stuff. Richard and Steve George were very reserved, quiet & humble,... Pat was surprisingly friendly, outgoing, and engaging. The second time I saw them at The Palace, I snuck a camera in and took pictures of them performing. I also got autographs while they were on stage. We sang our hearts out along with them, shifting between melody & harmony to the songs from "Go On", when, between songs, Richard said, "you sound great - take you on tour with us" - no joke! To this day, those two concerts/experiences remain among the biggest highlights of my life. Fast forward 18 years, I was able to contact Pat Mastelotto through his website and finally got to share those pictures with him! Pat's drum playing on Al Jarreau's "Let's Pretend" inspired me to want to learn the drums, & of course, Rich & "Slug" had their part in that tune as well singing backups and helping to write it. All four of them, Rich, Steve George, Steve Farris, and Pat Mastelotto are incredibly underrated & talented musicians, and deserved a lot more recognition than they got back then! Thank you so much for posting this interview! I didn't know about the background behind the song.

I worked in a job in those days for city government that had me work outside a lot (in the CA High Desert) and drive around, always with the radio on, and this song was so haunting and powerful and atmospheric and fitting for the locale, and it always spoke to me. Richard Page had done A LOT of background vocals on albums. That amazing voice of his truly stands out. You all might not be a CHER fan, but he did vocals on her song, ONE SMALL STEP. Very good. He really adds to the song. Just one song of many that he contributed his great vocals to.

Amazing song. It had that sound that only seemed to occur in the 80's. Kind of haunting I guess? I've never been able to describe "the sound" that I'm thinking of, maybe somebody else can? I'm thinking this song, and songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart, Silent Running, Boys of Summer etc.. There was something kind of ominous in the background. I've always felt it had to do with the Cold War times we lived in.

The advent of digital recording technology is what made it all possible. The producers of the day were brilliant and incredibly innovative. I think the magic of the early 80s music was in their use of synthesizers, electric guitar effects and electronic percussion. They were masters of the emerging digital format and various hardware, which I first heard in some of the incredible R/B and Disco records. I suppose it began with the invention of the Synclavier, ala Stevie Wonder. Those synthesized, electronic sounds were brand new to our ears, and facilitated a revolution in music orchestration. Suddenly an artist could produce any waveform imaginable. Prince was a pioneer of this stuff, including his groundbreaking use of the new Linndrum machine, and the newly created MIDI technology. The world of musical possibilities and sound choices became completely unlimited. One person, using one keyboard and a simple computer, could have an entire orchestra in their basement, on demand, which allowed for more sophisticated ideas to evolve. The British New Wave artists created an entirely new genre of music using digital technology. So, I guess that the haunting quality of those 80s tunes are due to layering various sounds to create that soundscape, similar to the Phil Spector concept, but much more complex. Brilliant musicians, coupled with brilliant producers, facilitated by freshly invented digital technology. We’ll never again see such a revolution in music.

The best way for me to describe the song is "ethereal," especially given its own inspiration from Khalil Gibran. I could also say it seems proto-shoegaze in approach.
I'll offer my story: I know that 1985 wasn't a great year for me health-wise, but when I first heard this, I couldn't help but think that being able to listen to this helped me put my life (such as it was then) in better perspective. Unfortunately, it was only the radio edit at the time and I felt a bit cheated (although I got to hear the album version some time later). Even at 4:20 or so, I still thought 3:30 was the standard for radio play and it didn't stretch to 4 minutes until the next decade.
Nevertheless, it's that final note from Richard that sealed it for me...I've never forgotten that plaintive wail of his.

It seems like there is a black screen behind the music. Like they exist in the vacuum of space. At least that's what I see in my head when I hear those songs. Maybe they muted all the tracks when they weren't active so there is no background noise, hum or anything.

If I had to choose a single favorite 80s song, it would probably be Broken Wings. It's a great track on its own, it's wonderfully evocative and representative of the mid-80s sound while still having its own highly unique vibe, and it's not so overplayed that it's lost its power. Other "Most 80s of the 80s" tracks like Billie Jean, or Hungry Like The Wolf, or Africa are almost punchlines at this point due to parody and overuse, but Broken Wings still resonates. Thanks so much for the extra information about it!
