Honestly SpongeBob is the most misunderstood character in the show considering he’s the main character and the fact he gives his heart put everyday even to the people who dislike him he still gets taken for granted i feel soo bad for him.

True, the national no SpongeBob day thing was so unnecessary. The only characters who need to take a break from SpongeBob is Squidward and Mrs. Puff. SpongeBob gives his entire joy, blood, sweat, tears and heart into making everyone in bikini bottom happy by serving them with burgers of love and they still treat him like a squeezed can in the street. And the time where he actually runs away everybody cries for him back just to treat him like trash AGAIN. SpongeBob and Squidward are the only characters in the show that are genuinely misunderstood and treated horribly.

He was ridiculed by the citizens of Bikini Bottom for daring to dream. Then when he achieved his dream, somehow he owed THEM favours, and they then went on to attack him for not doing chores for them. He owes them nothing.

Reasons why Sandy is the only real friend Spongebob has:
1. She's always honest with him.
2. She cares about him like a mother cares about her child.
3. She only scolds him when he's doing something that he should not be doing.
4. She praises him when he does something right or does something she finds interesting.
5. She's not like Patrick, a selfish idiot who always makes Spongebob's problems worse.
6. She's not like Mr. Krabs, who lets his greed and money-hungry nature get in the way of how he treats others.
7. She's not like Squidward, who loathes Spongebob to the point of the sponge's mere existence being seen as "annoying".
8. She's not like Plankton, who only ever seems to be using Spongebob and has an ulterior motive rather than being his friend.
9. She's not like Mrs. Puff, who only sees Spongebob as a hazard to his own and her own personal safety. Granted, they both have almost died in at least 100 boat accidents, but that's not my point here.
10. She's kind enough to take time and help Spongebob and teach him valuable lessons.
11. She seems to genuinely enjoy playing with Spongebob and spending time with him.
12. She hasn't been shown to mistreat or abuse Spongebob in any way.

1) I agree. Not to mention she doesn't try to hide something or take advantage of his obliviousness to disastrous levels. It's all crystal clear unless something's troubling her.
2) Ripped Pants, Pre-Hibernation Week, & Whatever Happened to Spongebob are excellent examples of this. His near-death and disappearing twice shows concertation on her part as she wonders if he's okay at the end. It's fundamentally seeing someone you're close two facing terrible conditions, and you managed to take time off from your perspective corner to see what's wrong with the other. That alone is genuine.
3) Tea at the Treedome, Sandy's Rocket, Pressure, Karate Island, Wigstruck, and Squirrel Jokes demonstrate this idea. And for the last two, Spongebob faced the realization that the wig is not worth his time due to what happened previously, and he gets comeuppance for continuous bad jokes. The fact that Sandy showed the sea-sponge how his actions affect those around him and give him a taste of his medicine rightfully felt heart-warming and satisfying. We all make mistakes, and Spongebob settled those blunders and let go of the foolishness. Many used the long way around and settle the problem at the last minute, never apprehending how stated conflict affects everything, and purposely increases it for selfish reasons. Just look at Patrick, Krabs, Plankton, and even Squidward on occasions.
4) I can't forget the ending of Ripped Pants where see says Spongebob should be himself after singing.
5) Let's face it; the sea-star pretty much taken advantage of his friendship with Spongebob for ludicrous reasons. And whenever he helps him with a problem, it just nothing more than careless fodder that sentenced Spongebob to anxiety and insecurity and feeds to his buffoonery. I'm With Stupid, Oral Report, and especially Yours, Mine, and Mine have him as this ignorant, gluttonous bully who doesn't think twice of how he treats his supposed best friend. Willing to complain, whine, and act like a smart-aleck to satisfy his idiotic needs. And yet, many choose to associate with him than the likes of the sea-sponge. Granted, he hasn't caused enough chaos like the sea-sponge, but his presence caused those conflicts to arise and taken little to no responsibility for it. To the point, Patrick's considered the lesser of two evils despite being the driving force of graver things. There's a difference between misunderstanding your actions and just being a brainless goof.
6) The elderly crustacean is a massive reflection of how many business owners operate in a tragic yet realistic behind closed doors: putting too much effort into embezzlement, lying, defrauding, and manipulating nations for the sake of filling his pockets. In Spongebob's case, he's identified as the Krusty Krab's life force that cannot go on without the latter. The fry cook gets trembled, scourged, and risking his life to serve someone who could've stabbed his back for a quick buck. Born Again Krabs has his soul sold for $.062, Squidward on Strike forced him and Squidward to pay for moronic reasons, and Krabby Kronicle him forced to create irrelevant fabrications. Greasy Buffoons did the same on a grosser scale, InSPONGEiac expected to take measures of rest due to a simple amount of mustard, and Spongebob You're Fired is discharged for a coin. Not to mention he would've maltreated someone for his own sake in Cent on Money and One Coarse Meal. I'm no employee, but I'm sure there are those out who experience despondency and almost lost their sense of mobility due to experiences like that.
7) I know there'll be others to argue with me on this, but here it goes. Squidward is not a saint and overrated. I won't act like there are concrete reasons why he begrudges Spongebob but rejecting his optimism can leave a bad taste in someone's mouth. True, his annoyance can lead to calamitous results, but the octopus takes them the wrong way to the point he could care less if the sponge perished. He's far too busy committing ridiculous acts of resistance and isolating himself from the world that doesn't care about one being to avoid Spongebob's mischievousness that has no intention to drive him crazy. Putting a restraining order, reading his diary, using a bulldozer, running away, and even having nightmares of him didn't make the sea-sponge understand he should mind his business. Outside all the turmoil, what Squidward didn't understand that Spongebob's the only one who seems to consider his presence. As for the times he gets payback, it only satisfied his desire to put the sea-sponge in atrocious conditions, rather than showing him how his actions affect the latter. I get Squidward's tired of being downsized by the world, but expecting Spongebob to do something he couldn't is literally relying on egotistical expectations.
8) Despite seeing them in episodes together and Sponge Out of Water, there's no denying Plankton is too reliant on an insignificant desire to catch something out of enviousness. And when he does succeed, he'll dispose of those who helped him and treat them like servants than friends.
9) The only time I ever see Mrs. Puff seeing Spongebob's problem with driving is in Bumper to Bumper. Outside of that, I agree with it the most. End of the day, she's only doing all these actions just so she doesn't have to deal with Spongebob anymore, like if he's an obstacle that keeps getting her way. Demolition Doofus has her try to kill him, but that didn't work either.
10) That's true. It shows Sandy has enough time to reflect on the situation and display compassion whenever things get severe. The rest are too worried about their problems and settled themselves in perspective corners without getting to the root of the problem. They either take advantage of Spongebob to fulfill their selfish satisfaction or avoiding him as he's identified as an eldrich abomination.
11) That's very noticeable. Patrick does that on many occasions. Squidward's shafted due to getting involved than avoid it. Krabs and Mrs. Puff got each other and don't have time for something like that. Plankton's unlikely the one to experience that again.
To sum it up, Sandy's pretty much the only character that appreciated the sea-sponge the most. Sure, there are times plenty of times where she made misfortunes of her own but compared to the rest, she's the only being that cares for Spongebob and his well-being.
Squidwards actually likes SpongeBob, he cries when he thinks he's dead, also he only does that because of everything SpongeBob does to him, he even ruins his life in one episode by impersonating him and then no one believes that he's Squidward

Spongebob was ultimately defending himself for having dreams being ridiculed by others who were clearly in the wrong, and then they chase after Spongebob after he rightfully made his defense, and when he fulfills his dreams the others of Bikini Bottom abuse it and use it as their own, and when he wants out, they ended his dream. The people of Bikini Bottom are so focused on pointing out the wrongs of others that they can’t even see that they themselves are wrong.
And next think is the people of Bikini Bottom started to cry and one of them say "what have we done?". And next think they take Spongebob's clothed instead of Spongebob.

God, I hate SpongeBob’s friends. He treats them correctly, and they mistreat him almost for fun.
The sad part is that while he can be annoying, the residents of Bikini Bottom actually do need his relentless optimism and energy because there isn't enough optimism to be had from any of them. Even generally optimistic Sandy. Because while he's not the brightest of bulbs, HE GETS SHIT DONE even if it's not in the way he expected. He just needs some direction.

In the hooks episode from what I feel like after watching the end, Mr. Krabs doesn't even do anything. He just stands inside the Krusty Krab as Spongebob gets dragged away instead of saving him and not showing any sympathy or shock when he soon gets captured.
Except Patrick. Who he completely disobeys Spongebob and Mr. Krab's warnings and soon gets his just desserts..

To me, it seems like SpongeBob receives more torture than Squidward does. He gets stabbed in the back by his so called best friend on a regular basis, his own neighbor wants to violently murder him if he annoys him (unintentionally obviously), his boss is willing to fire him over a nickel or sell his soul for $0.62, and the townspeople will end up joining it on said torture as well. They all need to die in a fire (or the Bikini Bottom equivalent to what would be fire to them underwater).

That episode where they dedicate a whole “day” of no SpongeBob and were gone for a week is really fucked up.
Right?! when i was a kid this episode made me feel upset, also seeing this as an adult, it's scary seeing Spongebob pretend to be all his friends, he went crazy from loneliness, imagine having a "special day" about people not being around you, how juvenile!
The worst things that happened to Spongebob that's hard for me to see is the Le Spatula episode, the one where he gets stuck in the shower wringer and the episode where Squidword pulls a hurtful april fools day prank on Spongebob making him cry. But the absolute worst thing that happened to Spongebob is when Gary runs away and Spongebob becomes extremely depressed and sad about it, that had me feeling very emotional, even though Gary and Spongebob reunited in the end anyway

Well, that's how life goes, a horrible person can do horrible things to a nice person, but if said nice person stands up for himself, said person is treated as the bad guy just for that. For example, harem animes often have female character abuse male characters, but if the male so much calls her out on it, not only does the female cry, the male is treated as the villain just for and I quote... 'hurting her feelings'.
True but this show is supposed to show light hearted humor and memorable things, not cruel and unusual imagery.
