    From what I read about it, a "definition" was concocted specifically to exclude Pluto. They claimed that Pluto wasn't a planet because it didn't "clear its orbit" (Neptune intersects.) But if the definition were genuine, Neptune would be disqualified for the same reason.

  • @kpheider
    @kpheider Před 15 lety +9

    The clearing of the orbit might gravitationally breakup a double planet pair (where the two bodies are of very similar mass). But then again you could call the Earth-Moon a double planet system depending on the definition used.

    True. I guess my problem is that the IAU was just going by their theory. They don't know that every planet had objects in their paths. I used to be a moon, but now I am a dwarf planet. I guess I was just upset because I am a dwarf planet, and Pluto's best friend. Like him, I am a former planet. So, I guess I was just not me at that time.

  • @kpheider

    Actually per the IAU definition the primary feature of a planet is the ability to gravitationally clear the orbit of debris. As new debris comes crossing into the zone, it will cleared over a short time scale.

    So all of the planets started out as rings similar to the astroid belt and kuiper belt. The largest objects in these belts began picking up the very small ones as they orbited around gaining mass. As it gains mass it picks up larger and larger objects. Eventually it picks up all of the objects forming the entire belt into one singular planet. The astroid belt and kuiper belt didn't have objects large enough to "clear the neighborhood".

    You're right, Pluto is still a planet.
    A dwarf planet.
    Nothing has changed.
    Most Trans-Neptunian Objects / Kuiper Belt Objects are comprised of ices from various elements. So you cannot call them asteroids because that denotes a rocky nature. These objects are not (in high percentages at least) rocky.

    At 2:10 he says that Plutos' orbit intersects with that of Neptunes. If so, does that it mean that it is possible for the two to collide? I understand even if it is possible, the chance of that would probably be 0.01% to actually happen, but still, it's an interesting thought I think.

    i would like to make a point to all those who complain that they can't change the status of pluto. Go way back when we thought the world was flat, when they said it was round few accepted the new concept but we got used to it.
    we need to think of this like we did then and we need to accept the change. That and they do have reasoning behind it. it's not like they did it on a whim.

  • @PicoriPi
    @PicoriPi Před 10 lety +5

    More up to date than your citeless ramblings. For the third time, what is this science that they decided not to consider when they reclassified the solar system?
    It's also important to keep in mind that these classification don't only help us understand our own solar system, but others that we are discovering.
    If you'd like me to explain clearing the neighborhood, I will do that for you.

    Then if we are talking about moons big enough to be truly a moon ( > 100 km diameter, mostly-spherioid shape), then these asteroids are actually planets.
    The primary feature of a planet is that it represents a gravitational source that causes nearby objects to orbit IT instead of the sun. It is a hierarchical distinction in the gravity system of our solar system. Any object that is massive enough to have moons, which themselves are massive enough to have sub-moons, is a planet.

    What scientific fact are they ignoring? Also who said that Pluto is the most popular planet? No one I know cared about Pluto 10 years ago. Pluto being classified as a planet was absurd and it needed to be fixed. The third part of the planet definition is a simple way of distinguishing the different between planet, and dwarf planet.
