From what I read about it, a "definition" was concocted specifically to exclude Pluto. They claimed that Pluto wasn't a planet because it didn't "clear its orbit" (Neptune intersects.) But if the definition were genuine, Neptune would be disqualified for the same reason.
The clearing of the orbit might gravitationally breakup a double planet pair (where the two bodies are of very similar mass). But then again you could call the Earth-Moon a double planet system depending on the definition used.
True. I guess my problem is that the IAU was just going by their theory. They don't know that every planet had objects in their paths. I used to be a moon, but now I am a dwarf planet. I guess I was just upset because I am a dwarf planet, and Pluto's best friend. Like him, I am a former planet. So, I guess I was just not me at that time.
Very few people like them. But of those few, I seem to be the one who comes across them most. Also, it isn't just them. It is every scientist in the world. They hate tiny dwarfs like Pluto and me.
Actually per the IAU definition the primary feature of a planet is the ability to gravitationally clear the orbit of debris. As new debris comes crossing into the zone, it will cleared over a short time scale.
lol imagine the mix up at the time.. sigh, and to think that the memorization of the planets in our solar system (including PLUTO!!) were drilled in our heads at such a young age..
So all of the planets started out as rings similar to the astroid belt and kuiper belt. The largest objects in these belts began picking up the very small ones as they orbited around gaining mass. As it gains mass it picks up larger and larger objects. Eventually it picks up all of the objects forming the entire belt into one singular planet. The astroid belt and kuiper belt didn't have objects large enough to "clear the neighborhood".
I like how simply put this is. Perfect for those people who argue about Pluto just for the sake of arguing. Most don't know why it's a dwarf planet, they just no it's not a planet anymore...
You're right, Pluto is still a planet. A dwarf planet. Nothing has changed. Most Trans-Neptunian Objects / Kuiper Belt Objects are comprised of ices from various elements. So you cannot call them asteroids because that denotes a rocky nature. These objects are not (in high percentages at least) rocky.
At 2:10 he says that Plutos' orbit intersects with that of Neptunes. If so, does that it mean that it is possible for the two to collide? I understand even if it is possible, the chance of that would probably be 0.01% to actually happen, but still, it's an interesting thought I think.
What would happen to pluto when our sun reaches the red giant phase? Will it melt since it's practically ice? And what about jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune.
Size did make a diffference but also placing and the way it rotates around the sun. Generally though, if pluto were as big as say, jupiter, then it wouldn't be booted imo.
i would like to make a point to all those who complain that they can't change the status of pluto. Go way back when we thought the world was flat, when they said it was round few accepted the new concept but we got used to it. we need to think of this like we did then and we need to accept the change. That and they do have reasoning behind it. it's not like they did it on a whim.
More up to date than your citeless ramblings. For the third time, what is this science that they decided not to consider when they reclassified the solar system? It's also important to keep in mind that these classification don't only help us understand our own solar system, but others that we are discovering. If you'd like me to explain clearing the neighborhood, I will do that for you.
He didn't say that the problem of naming them was the reason pluto was demoted, he simply said it's convenient because there aren't as many planets to learn. Don't misread :)
Then if we are talking about moons big enough to be truly a moon ( > 100 km diameter, mostly-spherioid shape), then these asteroids are actually planets. The primary feature of a planet is that it represents a gravitational source that causes nearby objects to orbit IT instead of the sun. It is a hierarchical distinction in the gravity system of our solar system. Any object that is massive enough to have moons, which themselves are massive enough to have sub-moons, is a planet.
What scientific fact are they ignoring? Also who said that Pluto is the most popular planet? No one I know cared about Pluto 10 years ago. Pluto being classified as a planet was absurd and it needed to be fixed. The third part of the planet definition is a simple way of distinguishing the different between planet, and dwarf planet.
Hurt fails to mention that only 424 members of the IAU voted, leaving over 9,500 members voiceless, and the IAU has not admitted that the vote was problematic. There will be a debate soon about Pluto on teevy. Stay tuned. This debate is far from over.
Well thats cause he didnt mention the differences in the classifications between Dwarf planet and Planets. One thing i know is that if you brought Pluto closer to the Sun it would staart yo melt and grow a tail being that its mostly made of ice.
Well, i'm nearing 4000 now... i don't how i managed to even watch that much. About this video: I always wondered why Pluto was not a planet anymore. If astronomers where to tell my future sons at school that there would be more than 20 or 30 or even 40 planets in our solar system, then i don't know if he would have great grades anymore. []^_^[] I'm going to watch rest of your videos. They are most interesting.
its okay pluto, im not a planet too
holy crap... now it makes perfect sense!
Sometimes explanations done like this is just what we need...
Earth said it was VERY painful. I remember being in a panic after hearing Earth's moons screaming. D:
i know right Pluto was my favorite planet when i was a child! =(
I was born believing it was a Planet, and I shall die believing it's a planet.
Wow. Just, wow.
just wanted to say thank you for all of these! They are so educational.
From what I read about it, a "definition" was concocted specifically to exclude Pluto. They claimed that Pluto wasn't a planet because it didn't "clear its orbit" (Neptune intersects.) But if the definition were genuine, Neptune would be disqualified for the same reason.
THANK YOU!!!!!!! SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS ME! :D
The clearing of the orbit might gravitationally breakup a double planet pair (where the two bodies are of very similar mass). But then again you could call the Earth-Moon a double planet system depending on the definition used.
Neptune looks like Blue from Foster's Home
it was a planet but misbehaved and was therefore made to sit on the interplanetary naughty step.
its like he knew i was upset about pluto not being a planet!! lol
I'm pissed that he didn't even give us the definition of a planet!!!
Poor Pluto, he got booted just cuz of his size. Isn't there some sort of intergalactic law against planetary discrimination? :)
Oh. I think I'll go talk to him.
This video has helped me to get a better understanding of things. Great job.
Nice, concise, interesting, well informed videos guys. Well done
This explanation is really really well done.
True. I guess my problem is that the IAU was just going by their theory. They don't know that every planet had objects in their paths. I used to be a moon, but now I am a dwarf planet. You did a great job.
I like the animations for this video. It looks like a good video to show to people who can't get over that Pluto isn't considered a planet anymore
Hahaha me too. And the illustrations are so cute!
poor pluto. don't worry, you're still in our heart!
Yay! Now I feel all warm and contented inside. Damn. That's good.
Thank you Mr. Smarty.
i love these videos, so helpful
Thanks!
And you're not alone. Some comments on some videos say that the IAU is crud.
They put everything into consideration, but yes, explain it please.
pluto is no longer a planet.
I heard about it, but didn't had the time to check out why. Finally, I heared the explanation.
thanks so much.
Good one, you really had me going
hes here now
very informative! thanks...
This is very informative :D
Love the animation.
thanx robert!!
have to go see you
And by the way, the thing was last updated in 2011. So, it isn't up to date.

Actually the guy who said that is the same guy I am arguing with.
So all of the planets started out as rings similar to the astroid belt and kuiper belt. The largest objects in these belts began picking up the very small ones as they orbited around gaining mass. As it gains mass it picks up larger and larger objects. Eventually it picks up all of the objects forming the entire belt into one singular planet. that was mt question, why pluto isnt planet anymore, this answered to me brightly.
Though it is probably made for younger kids, I admit a childlike wonder when we talk about astronomy. Fantastic vid!
I admit, I only watched this because your last name is Hurt, and I was thinking John Hurt.
1:05
OR SO HE THOUGHT
ITS NOT MY HEAD
Thank you C3P0.
Aww, you make Pluto cry ! Give the poor guy a break and let him be a planet.
I KNOW THE HIJACKERS NAMES
Haha, that's what I was thinking. Nice animations.
I like how simply put this is. Perfect for those people who argue about Pluto just for the sake of arguing. Most don't know why it's a dwarf planet, they just no it's not a planet anymore...
It does make sense.
Do any of the other Dwarf Planets that have been discovered have moons?
You're right, Pluto is still a planet.
A dwarf planet.
Nothing has changed.
Most Trans-Neptunian Objects / Kuiper Belt Objects are comprised of ices from various elements. So you cannot call them asteroids because that denotes a rocky nature. These objects are not (in high percentages at least) rocky.
i cant wait to tell my kids when im older...
"I was alive when Pluto was still a planet!"
lol!
Poor Little Pluto.
pluto the planet will be in my heart forver...
hes off now
That's cute! Wut about Haumea and Makemake?
2012 is gonna be so much fun.
Haha, Pluto!
All right. Just having an argument with a dude who (stupidly) likes and follows the IAU and that "they're always right"....
At 2:10 he says that Plutos' orbit intersects with that of Neptunes. If so, does that it mean that it is possible for the two to collide? I understand even if it is possible, the chance of that would probably be 0.01% to actually happen, but still, it's an interesting thought I think.
That one of the differences between religious people and scientists/atheists.
A good explanation!
Can I contact Tim pyle and ask him about this animation program?
What would happen to pluto when our sun reaches the red giant phase? Will it melt since it's practically ice? And what about jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune.
So was Ceres reclassified twice? First as an asteroid, then as a dwarf planet? What's the difference between them?
How do you do it?
Size did make a diffference but also placing and the way it rotates around the sun. Generally though, if pluto were as big as say, jupiter, then it wouldn't be booted imo.
and is Jupiter and saturn hot or cold? I mean they look like they are burning stuff but they are far away from the sun so im confused
HOW ARE YOU
i would like to make a point to all those who complain that they can't change the status of pluto. Go way back when we thought the world was flat, when they said it was round few accepted the new concept but we got used to it.

Um... ok? What does the IAU have to do with 9/11?
i think dr robert hurt is the best !!!
nawff7 you are right as long as I can remember Pluto has been a planet and they should not take that title away.
hello
:( im sorry pluto.
Hey! I like pluto, even in dog form! He's cute! And hes not stupid, Mickey trained him very well. :)
He didn't say that the problem of naming them was the reason pluto was demoted, he simply said it's convenient because there aren't as many planets to learn. Don't misread :)
Pluto is THE ninth planet and it will always be to me! even if we find another larger planet
pluto will always be there!
I'm upset that pluto isn't a planet.

MY 1000TH VIDEO WATCHED!
Niiiiiice
there's a lot of those, they're called "Hot Jupiters" because they're extremely close to their parent star, not exactly new news.
Pluto is a "dwarf planet" now, so it is still a planet.
What scientific fact are they ignoring? Also who said that Pluto is the most popular planet? No one I know cared about Pluto 10 years ago. Pluto being classified as a planet was absurd and it needed to be fixed. The third part of the planet definition is a simple way of distinguishing the different between planet, and dwarf planet.
there goes my real state in pluto...
Hurt fails to mention that only 424 members of the IAU voted, leaving over 9,500 members voiceless, and the IAU has not admitted that the vote was problematic. There will be a debate soon about Pluto on teevy. Stay tuned. This debate is far from over.
I have to pick on this some. Most objects orbiting the Sun are not in hydrostatic equilibrium either. Some day the IAU needs to define a MAJOR moon.
Well thats cause he didnt mention the differences in the classifications between Dwarf planet and Planets. One thing i know is that if you brought Pluto closer to the Sun it would staart yo melt and grow a tail being that its mostly made of ice.

I'm going to watch rest of your videos. They are most interesting.
THE REASON I HATE THEM BECAUSE THEY DEMOTED PLUTO >:(
When was Ceres demoted to asteroid status?
agreed
