  • Aragorn is the great hope for Middle-earth in the Third Age, one of Sauron's greatest enemies. But why would an immortal Maia fear a mortal Man? This video is an exploration of Aragorn's lineage and unique place in the world. It is an attempt to show that Sauron was wise to fear the Return of the King, the symbol of hope for all Sauron's enemies.

    Excellent 'deep dive'. I had always felt that one reason Sauron feared Aragorn was that as the Heir of Isildur Aragorn has a right to the one ring given that his ancestor had won it in battle and claimed it as were-gild for his father and brother. Such a claim to the ring would have great weight and would strengthen Aragorns ability to wield it as such things have power in mythological tales and LoTR is first and foremost a myth.

    Wow! Just discovered your channel and the video quality is top notch! The music, the graphics, and making the images come to life! To say nothing of the content and honing in on a very specific concept, not really discussed elsewhere. (Bonus points for specifically pointing out that it's not about stats or which race is greater than the next, etc).
    On other thing I'd like to point out when you talk lineage - and not to go all religious on you, but in the Bible (in Matthew and Luke), it traces Jesus' lineage all the way back to King David and even to Adam. No doubt Tolkien was influenced in that regard as well, due to his faith. Course, that touches on an entirely additional concept about the messianic symbolism of Aragorn as well, one that Tolkien would deny, no doubt (as he "wasn't writing an allegory" ;) ). In any case, I just thought it was interesting, and though I knew Aragorn was descended from Elendil, and I knew Elendil was descended from Elros - (and beyond) - I never really thought how Aragorn was also descended from Melian. Obviously, true in retrospect, but Aragorn (and others) constantly talked about the Heir of Isildur and all that, it's easy to forgot just how far back you can take it.
    One last thing - you've got an excellent narrator's voice! Wow! ;) Will be looking into your patreon!

  • @brendangolledge8312
    @brendangolledge8312 Před 2 měsíci

    My interpretation was just that people are strong when united and weak when disunited. Sauron had the strength to conquer or subvert one kingdom at a time, but he was not strong enough to face all of mankind against him at once.
    If I recall correctly, there was a time when the Numenoreans defeated Sauron and brought him back to Numenor as a prisoner. When the Numenorean army arrived, Sauron didn't even bother to fight, because their forces were so obviously superior to his own. He surrendered as soon as he saw them. It was after he was brought back to Numenor that he corrupted the king and eventually convinced Numenor to break the ban of the Valar, which caused Numenor to sink into the sea. So, Sauron knows from his own personal experience that he cannot defeat mankind when they are united under one legitimate authority. His only hope of defeating humanity is by undermining that authority.
    In the world of Middle Earth, only Aragorn could claim the authority to unite all of mankind. When it comes to ruling mankind, there could only either be Aragorn (or someone from his line) with the legitimate authority, or else Sauron, ruling by deception and force. With respect to mankind, the line of Isildor was Sauron's only true enemy. No other human could have rallied a sufficiently united front against him.
    Mathematically speaking, if a faction is broken in two equal parts and are fighting against one-another (50% vs 50%), then they are evenly matched. An outside force, even if small, could choose a side to join and determine a victor. But suppose Sauron is only able to corrupt 10% of mankind to set them against the rest; then mankind is actually weakened by 20%, because Sauron controls 10%, and it takes at least 10% of the remainder to subdue the traitors. So, however many men Sauron corrupts to his side, mankind as a whole is weakened by at least twice that much. But the reality was that humanity was broken into several small kingdoms, each with little-to-no claim upon the others. Sauron only needs to be able to subvert or conquer one or two, and all the others stand very little chance, because there is no authority (apart from Aragorn) under which they will all unite against him. Sauron, being immortal, and cleverer and physically stronger than basically all humans, will eventually conquer everything given an equal playing field (where power and authority are a giant free for all). Let's say for the sake of argument that Sauron controlled 30% of mankind, and Rohan and Gondor each have 20%. If Sauron is fighting each one at a time, then it's 30 vs 20, and he easily wins (even neglecting his other forces, like orcs and trolls). But if Rohan and Gondor join, then it's 40 vs 30 and Sauron loses. Or if all the rest of humanity comes together, then it's 70 vs 30, and it's not even close. As I understand it, the line of Isildor is the only authority in Middle Earth that could convince all of mankind to join together like that.

      I think people loving the movies and talking about the movies a lot is fine, of course. It is annoying when people use what was said in a movie to talk about what Tolkien had written though. So much of those movies doesn't really line up and if people have only watched the movies then they should really only be arguing about the movies and not the books, surely? :D

    Wonderful video! Aragorn is second only to Gandalf of the characters I like best in LOTR. One thing I think is worth noting is how he truly embodied the idea of Estel, particularly in leading his army to the Morannon to try and lure Sauron's forces away from Orodruin. For all he knew, whether or not the One Ring was destroyed, he, his friends, and his soldiers could have all perished in the attempt yet he led them there anyway.

    I've watched this twice, that's how good this is. 👍
    Also, the way you presented Aragorn's story made me realize there could be a different interpretation of Gilraen's words.
    "I gave hope to the Dunédain. I kept no hope for myself."
    I always thought these words were so tragic and sad. Why would she be so full of despair, with such an amazing son who surely was able to speak convincingly to her about the "light beyond the darkness" (RotK, appendices). At a first glance, it seems she was unable to see that light. Nothing but utter despair.
    Now I suddenly realize there could be a different interpretation, too. Maybe she was coming from a place of calm contentment. Just stating the obvious, "I have given everything there is to give - and I have no doubts regarding the completion of my very own task. That is why I don't need to keep even a tiny part of that hope for myself. It's better to let others benefit from that. I'm good."
    I think it's quite powerful to look at it from this perspective, it is like an unexpected discovery of reassurance and content calmness at the end of the line.

      There's another aspect to Gilraen as well. the different definitions of hope in Tolkien's works. Estel means 'hope' but it is hope in the face of danger, grief, and hardship. Basically, estel is like a hope that is tied to faith. Amdir is another word for hope but it takes into account what lies ahead in your path. Simple hope without that faith aspect often leads to an end, perhaps a glorious end but still a defeat nonetheless. Estel is a hope that is rewarded through faith, almost expecting defeat but challenging it and knowing that you would contribute to something greater even if you fall. It's almost as if Gilraen represents hope without that faith. But Aragorn is the actual personification of Estel. Gilraen dies before ever seeing Aragorn flourish but by dying and adding to the tragedy, Aragorn is pushed further into what it is he was essentially born for. Anyway, I'm rambling! I've never thought about discussing this part of Aragorn's life at any length, I think it would be interesting to examine it further.

      Exactly. It's the ego and arrogance of evil figures. Sauron could only measure others against himself as he saw himself as the greatest, the wisest. Allowing a Hobbit to carry the ring would make no sense, a figure of 'power' would surely seize it and attempt to use it because he would do that and he's the wisest. It's like some sort of evil circular reasoning that dims wisdom.

    This idea that those who seek power being unable to comprehend others not seeking it has always struck such a chord with me. As someone who grew up in the house of a wealthy businessman, it really has been a journey for me to unlearn that fear of losing power and the schooling of how important wealth acquisition was. It has been quite a journey for me to take a lower paying job where I feel better about the ethics of the work I do.
    Whenever I see the one ring being discussed in Tolkien it always speaks to me as a metaphor for the kind of power I could have acquired. If I had sacrificed my morals and gone down the route that would earn me lots of money but leave me feeling like my life is a net negative for the world. It also reminds me of the sort of actions people take in haste for this kind of career progression. Like, people feel the need to earn as much as possible right now, and they constantly take on work that's right up to the limit of what they can handle. And while yes, that can be a way to learn. They are working with so little leeway relative to their skill level that when the going gets tough they often feel pressure to compromise their morals to meet the demands of the role. I really think there's a lot of wisdom in Tolkien's condemnation of haste.
    Meanwhile we have Aragorn here letting men leave his army while the "optimal" thing to do might seem to be to keep as many men as possible. And the world in that moment is better for it. And more importantly he is better for it. He will be making decisions in the future as the Aragorn that showed compassion and mercy instead of the Aragorn that "did what was necessary".

    I genuinely think Aragorn could take Sauron in a fight, he was a ranger for most of his life and was trained by Elrond making him far more nimble than Isildur and Elendil were. Sauron is definitely more powerful physically and spiritually being a fallen Maia, but Aragorn is a true warrior, not just a great king, he’s a true hero and a great man, he’ll do anything to protect those he loves. Even though it wasn’t in the books, that deleted scene at the Black Gate between Aragorn and Sauron was so cool, if only there was more footage, an epic duel between the two, with Aragorn eventually getting Sauron on the defence. But if Aragorn was getting Sauron against the ropes it would take away from the hobbits in Mount Doom. So it’s best the scene was deleted, still would be an awesome scene, I’d be rooting for Aragorn all the way and believe Aragorn could eventually kill Sauron’s physical body again.

    I love the story arc of Aragorn in the lord of the rings. The story was never told from his perspective that i can recall. But the story was about him in the end in my opinion. He tied it all together from the silmarillion to the return of the king. Descended from beren and luthien elwing and earendil. Not only blood of the elves and men blood of the maiar. And then he lived up to it. Best character in the story. The hesitation to take his place at the front and then the commitment to lead starting in Rohan was perfect. Only part of the movies better than the books was the line "For Frodo."

    The One Ring is the "ruling ring". As Saruman hints, one could theoretically put on the ring and command any creature of darkness, if his willpower is more or less equal to the creature's. That's why Frodo puts on the ring at Weathertop and the Fords of Bruinen. At Weathertop, his cry for Elbereth combined with the authority given by the ring was deadly to the Nazgul but at the Fords of Bruinen they simply laugh at him when he says "leave me alone". That's a fragile, scared, weak voice. Not the voice of a mighty rules and tyrant. Aragorn, Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel and Denethor would be much different. One can speculate that even the Nazgul would obey the commands of the new Lord of the Rings. Sauron without the ring is just a shrivelled husk of his old self. A new lord with a soul and power of his own enhanced with the best part of Sauron's power might have seemed more worthy of obedience. Frodo threatens Gollum with putting on the ring and commanding him to kill himself and that scares Gollum. Because at that time, Frodo had started to turn into a much different character under the extended influence of the ring. Not thin and stretched like Bilbo, but lordly and cruel. In the end, Frodo's rejection of destroying the ring was not only a failure of will, but a character transformation from selfless, naive hero wanting to save the world to power-hungry ruler wanting to punish and oppress. What would any true lord become with such power? And Aragorn's ancestors, the Numenoreans beat Sauron TWICE. First time, they enslaved Sauron which ended in him losing his fair form and body, the second ended in him losing his ring, the greater part of his soul and power. Sauron learned not to underestimate humanity way before Aragorn showed up. So he wisely fears the third encounter which would be the last and he loses everything. That possibility frightens him deeply, especially if Aragorn were to find and use the ring. Sauron is strong but his strength is not so great that he should calculate strength by the amount of force at any given moment.

    Tolkein clearly provides examples of mixed lineage being a strength. He does use the idea that certain bloodlines are paragons of certain traits and that this stregnth from blood is passed down. This does have some implcations that may sound like eugenics or other such vile things to some, but you'd have to not pay attention at all really. Frodo, Aragorn, Elrond, all of the Numenoreans, these are all examples of mixing bloodlines with a result that is stronger the parts that make the whole. Eugenics is about distillation for strength, Tolkein writes about diversification of bloodlines creating some of the greatest heros.
    To attribute anything so foul to Tolkein's work is nothing more than a lack of basic reading comprehension skills coupled with a victimhood complex.

    Did Sauron think that Aragorn already had possession of the One Ring? Did Sauron think that a Hobbit was carrying the Ring for him to use once he established himself in Minus Tirith? I am not totally clear on why Sauron feared Aragorn, even after watching the video.😅
    Maybe I am wrong, but I would think that Sauron should at least be able to sense when someone else is wearing the Ring, not where the person is, but only that he is wearing it. Sauron has access to the power of the Ring even when he isn't wearing it, so can't he feel a power struggle over use of the Ring's power, whether he or another is drawing power from it?

    • @StevenGibbYT
      @StevenGibbYT  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I'm getting deja vu because we discussed this before. Especially the part where you say Sauron has "access" to the power of the ring without wearing it because it became an arbitrary thing about how far he has to be from it to still make use of it. I don't like nitpicky discussions like that though cause they just seem to exist in some eager attempt to find fault in the logic of the story.
      You don't seem to need to wear the ring to make some use of it (perhaps not full use of it), as we see with Frodo when he dominates Gollum. He's still carrying it though, bearing it. If the ring is 10 feet away from Sauron it might as well be 10000 miles away from him.

      I never seek to find fault in anything I read in the Legendarium. If I have a fault, it is that I take everything written way too seriously, like it is true history and therefore can be explained.
      I thought you could explain how most of Sauron's power is poured into the Ring and that he has access to most of that power, yet he thinks Aragorn is using the Ring? That means he doesn't know. He knew when Frodo put the Ring on. That was probably because Frodo claimed the Ring for himself. Great. So, Aragorn didn't claim the Ring for himself yet Sauron is terrified because he thinks Aragorn has it and will eventually use it? I am trying to figure this out.

    • @StevenGibbYT
      @StevenGibbYT  Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@Enerdhil - I have never said that Sauron has "access to most of that power". I don't know why that's being said because I have never held that view. I only said in other videos that without the ring he isn't diminished. Sauron can't use the ring at all when he doesn't have it. He's just not "enhanced" on earth without it.
      According to Gandalf, Sauron will believe that there will be a champion among the powers of the West who will take the ring from the others, leading them. The signs then start pointing to this. Saruman and Isengard are defeated, the Witch-king is defeated, Aragorn reveals himself, his huge army is defeated, and then a small army marches to Mordor shouting for all to hear that the King is returned. Sauron isn't stupid, he's just not aware of the full picture. All signs are pointing to Aragorn being that champion who now carries the ring. He's only somewhat less frightened because it seems Aragorn is foolishly marching to Mordor way too soon.

      Yes. Your explanation of what Sauron was thinking was clear in the video and since Sauron cannot sense where the Ring might be, it is the best explanation.
      I am still trying to figure out the power dynamics between Sauron and The One Ring. I always believed that Sauron put most of his power and essence into the Ring when he forged it. I thought this diminished him without the Ring. Now it seems you are saying the Ring's power only "enhanced" his powers. I never thought of it that way because when the Ring was destroyed, Sauron lost all his power. That seems like more than 50% of his innate power was imbued into the Ring.
      Anyway, I will accept your explanation because frankly no one has a better one.
