It has been my experience that no matter what level rider you are, there are certain foundational aspects of riding that just aren’t being taught correctly today. These areas are foundational meaning if the rider is not educated or made aware, they are missing major pieces that will continue to affect their ability to ride well, progress as they should and communicate effectively with their horse.
It continues to bother me greatly how little most of the leading equine professionals know when it comes to teaching a correct riding foundation. A foundation means you study a curriculum, learning the building blocks, or A, B, C’s, that are necessary to development and achieving the level of success - whatever that is, you are striving for.
Foundation training is an entity in and of itself and one we will lightly touch upon in another blog post. For now, let’s focus on a few of the most common areas neglected or never taught to the rider that keep the rider stagnate, frustrated and from reaching their goals:
1) Permission to get on & Pre-flight to Riding
2) Balancing relaxation and poise in the rider’s body when in movement
3) Correct focal point
4) Correct hand position
5) Correct upper body position
6) Correct saddle and seat position
7) Correct leg position
8) Correct foot position - with stirrup or without
9) Proper Contact and rein length
10) How to begin your riding warm up - what areas to focus on: big walk with a focus on lengthening the stride, stretching and relaxation. Getting in rhythm with your horse’s movement during this time so you create the level of endorphins necessary to create relaxation and synergy in you both. Also checking your body, aids and level of responsiveness in your horse during this time.

Thank you! Well said. These days everywhere you look there is a horse "trainer." I've always secretly laughed at this even though I DON'T consider myself an expert. I loved horses my whole life but I'm only riding for 25 yrs. But in those 25 years I'm CONSTANTLY learning, a person is never done learning when it comes to a horse and only a fool would think they know it all. I also see way too many 20 year old "instructors." Not for me, thank you. Give me that older, experienced, had-their-ass-slammed-in-the-dirt, teacher. I learn the most from them. Love your videos, keep 'em coming please.
Good for you, Caroline. My riding coach has been teaching centered riding for over 30 years. I have been taking lessons with her for over a year, and just started cantering and trotting over poles. Jami is amazing and really knows her stuff.
Well said! I worked on the racetrack for 35 yrs. I've noticed how the trainers i've sent my saddle horses to are good riders but have absolutley no idea about stable management, health care, doctoring, trailer loading, etc. yet they think they're professional. The old time horsemen and women taught me so much about those things.I was fortunate to have known them.
Everything you say makes perfect sense. I want to start over from the beginning. I know absolutely nothing other than I have spent hundreds of hours mounted (forwards and backwards) and some in a saddle . I have walked, jogged, trotted, extended trotted, loped, cantered, hand galloped, and full galloped. I even paced once and racked a few times. Besides that, I am totally green. 👍
Bravo!!! Sooo true! Thank you!
I am one of those older women who is owning a horse for the first time! I enjoy your videos and they’re so helpful. Especially the riding ones because I do t own a saddle yet. Again. Thanks so very much

@@sarahnystrom8517 yes maam! It sure is a great state :] lucky us right?! 🤗
Chelsea D right. It has everything from lakes that could be mistaked as oceans, a peninsula, and not too hot not cold weather. Good fudge too. Up north I mean they have really good fudge.
job well done,impressive reume.
Freaking love these ones! She almost never does this.
If we think about it🤔 everything she is saying is spot on. She has the experience, which has developed into expertise.
This is all just common sense
Thank you so much Kings Mom! We will be launching the new course soon!!!!
Where is part 2?
awesome
Where are you located?
Wish you were a little closer!
While I really liked and enjoyed the lessons I’ve taken I feel like there wasn’t a foundation being built.

I like your method, but you yourself said you were self taught starting at 15…
This speech sort of counters the way your method began. Just an observation.
That said, I do like your methods much better than most I see on CZcams
Karen Rohlf is a fantastic dressage instructor who also lives in Florida. Have you heard of her?
Hi Mygemmagirl and Welcome! Yes I have. I also teach dressage. Many of my students are from all over the US and World come for weekly immersions here at my facility to learn with me and my school masters. I am 11 and I have “instructed” my little cousin. It wasn’t stuff like framing, it was more like the basics. Walk, trot, canter. No jumps. It wasn’t even on a real horse. I want to be an instructor but I am not and don’t think I am. Not that you said that just explaining myself 😂.
Too bad that I don'd live out by you... I'd apprentice from you.
Hi MsGroovalicious and Welcome! You don't have to live near me to learn or apprentice! I am about to release my new Tao of Horsemanship MasterMembership™ Program. "what every rider should know part 1" I have learned nothing. Just listened to another woman ranting!
Roy Hetherington shut up. This is only part one part two is going to be more info.
@@sarahnystrom8517 I can't wait. More ranting.
Roy Hetherington your so arrogant. This is just a part one so she’s giving an intro.
@@Roy1 a man ranting about ranting. You're doing your job well.
Zeeba Neighba thank you
I've had trail horses for over 20 years and never had a riding lesson. Why? Because I have never felt comfortable having a 20 something "teaching" me. The few trainers I have found that are older only want to train people that are going to show. Why is that? Riding horses in any discipline still has to have foundations, right?
Hi Cassie! Becoming a professional horse trainer and instructor is done very differently in Europe. You have to go to school and apprentice so you have a good foundation, education, experience and mentoring. Unfortunately it's not the same here in the States:( What I recommend is researching and asking the right questions, conducting an interview with the instructor if need be (if website, credentials, referrals aren't enough) so you can assess what they know or don't know. I would also want to see my instructor teach, train and ride before I sign up. If they have plenty of videos to watch, that should be enough too
Please please wear a helmet, save your noggin... no matter how great a horse is, landing on your head only takes a split second...and we want you around for as long as we can have you.
please, stop this helmet nonsense... it is her choise, so respect it...
@@galinasandorova5046 western riders never wear helmets and nobody makes a big deal of it ....i wonder how many injuries occur western no helmet vs english with helmet
Helmets cant protect your neck. They also give some individuals a false sense of security. Please use common sense.
Get to the point geez
