How to Ride the Trot & Canter: Part II

  • Hi, I’m Caroline Rider of Rider Horsemanship. This month’s Holistic Horse “Ask the Expert” Q&A is about developing a balanced seat during the trot to canter transition. This month’s viewer question is: “Dear Caroline, I bounce often at the trot, causing me to tense and my horse to speed up and rush into the canter. My question is threefold; how do I learn to sit the sitting trot and how do I ask my horse into a canter from the sitting trot? I also need to help my horse remain calm and tolerant of me while I am learning. Please help!”
    This video is in two parts with the first part, Part I, demonstrating how I teach the rider how to embody energy, rhythm and become one with the horse in that movement. This is achieved through my ground work exercises for both horse and rider and involve both the free longe and my longeing technique. Here is the link to view Part I: • How to Ride the Trot &...
    This video, Part II, is about transferring my ground work approach and technique to riding. Here I demonstrate the following qualities necessary to developing a balanced, independent seat within the rider as well as sitting the sitting trot to canter transitions:
    - Rider embodiment of the 2 beat trot and/or 3 beat canter when asking the horse to engage in similar movement
    - Breakdown of rider’s position, and body mechanics, when asking for specific movement
    - Understanding the function of the pelvis, hips, and seat when involved in movement
    - Qualities or proper rider position for rider-horse synergy, alignment and balance
    - Biomechanics of rider and horse in movement when engaged in the 2 beat trot and the 3 beat canter
    I prefer to teach the sitting trot to canter transition bareback and for several reasons: 1) riding bareback will keep you safe. Yes, safe. I don’t know anyone, including myself, who will take the risk of getting hurt when riding bareback. You either know you can get on your horse and work safely bareback or you don’t. Bareback riding tends to remind us to not take the chances we would normally when in the saddle. We tend to take our time and are more mindful, aware, of our surroundings including our horse; 2) developing balance is easier without stirrups. We tend to put too much pressure, brace, in our stirrups when learning to ride or even refine our riding; 3) we can develop better feel and timing when we can feel our horse underneath us. Horses are sensitive to begin with and even more so when they can feel direct contact from our seat; 4) there is no better connection, in mind and body, than the connection a horse and rider obtains when moving as one. Trust and partnership are the two founding qualities to mastering bareback riding and when we have achieved these with our equine partners, we feel the magic of melding two minds, two bodies and two souls - together in harmonious dance.
    The rhythm and tempo that rider and horse develop together through my ground exercises originates from the rider's hips/pelvis and moves upward through their spine and outward. Same feeling the rider feels when they are riding the movement, thus when the rider has worked weeks with my ground work this way and then rides, the horse and rider are tuned into the subtly of the mind-body synergy created for movement. This way not only offers an amazing relationship throughout your work together, it strengthens partnership and creates safety by developing full focus (discipline of the mind and obedience), awareness, presence and Being present together.

      Hi Erika and Welcome! Great to hear how well this video resonates with you, works for you. Should you want to learn more, I offer a wide array of learning opportunities here at my FL facility and on my online training academy for people and horses. Here is a little more about my approach.
      We believe in a holistic approach to horsemanship, providing expert knowledge and instruction for the whole horse and rider. Our approach is multi-dimensional and includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of both the person and horse’s well-being.
      We specialize in both foundation training and problem-solving and have the answers you are searching for. The key in horsemanship and having the partner you want with your horse is in foundation training. If your horse has either had 1) trauma or 2) hasn’t had a correct and solid foundation (start), they will either be too scared to learn or missing key building blocks to their development.
      Horses need years of development and learning to be at the level you see in many of the professional clinician and trainer’s horses - including what you see in my videos. There are no quick fixes, tricks or gimmicks and like any solid education, it takes a curriculum or program to follow so you are building a correctly foundation.
      We have 8 training modules that we follow in our curriculum that specialize in self-awareness, the spiritual connection, relationship, discipline, confidence, biomechanics and balanced riding. Click here for details on our training pyramid www.riderhorsemanship.com/rh-training-program.
      Should you be interested in learning online, we offer a very large and comprehensive online training academy for people and horses. Click here for details about our online academy training courses www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/.

    Ah, so nice to see that your main emphasis is on the energetic exchange between you and your horse. I am a beginner rider but not in connecting with animals. This connection is genuine and will make the learning experience so much richer and more fulfilling than just going through the motions. Your referencing the tightness in the rider body is clarifying a lot for me as well, so thank you!

      So many of us are missing the essence of relationship in our horsemanship. We are led to believe the only way to handle, work with and train a horse is by following the same, mundane principles and practices of the much taught, and publicized, equine training programs that surround equine care, handling, training and problem-solving.
      If you are like the many of us who know this, you struggle with the despair and frustration of dealing with what’s considered, and accepted, normal horsemanship practices. You yearn for a way in which to work with your horse that is compassionate, fulfilling, effective and most of all best for both you and your horse.
      This is why I created my work - to unite both you and your horse as one in mind, soul and movement. Not only will you learn how to deepen the relationship you share with your horse, you will build the best and safest riding foundation through knowledge and skill in horse behavior, training theory and correct ground and riding practices.
      So, come join me as we embark together on this journey to build the most amazing relationship and ride with your horse! Limited time offer $34.95/month! .......I've read various opinions on BB pads. What do you think? And which brands are good?

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 7 lety

      Hi Chloe and Welcome! Great to hear how well my method is resonating with you. I cannot recommend enough how wonderful a well made bareback pad is for you and your horse's comfort. I've ridden and worked with at least 1,000 horses in my career and I've never had a sore back using a good, well-made pad. I can't say the same about ill fitting saddles.
      The horse is going to feel your seat bones and if you have a thick enough pad they will never get sore. You can also add a saddle pad underneath for horses with more obvious spines and high withers.
      I recommend the following bareback pad riderhorsemanship.com/product/bareback-pad-heavy-duty-trainer/. It is big enough for the average to heavy set rider, thick, comfortable for the horse, suede that helps you stay connected/stick to the horse, leather straps to keep everything in place.
      Enjoy! Caroline

    Really helpful! I have an Arabian mare and I am a tense person. With the tenseness in both of us. I have never been able to effectively sit the trot or the canter. I now have a young Arabian Stallion and am very committed to teaching him a good canter and a soft sitting trot. I am thinking that I need to have someone else teach him to canter - a better rider that is more supple and relaxed. What do you recommend?

  • @onlineteachinghelp2593
    @onlineteachinghelp2593 Před 9 lety +2

    Hi, thank you so much for posting this. Could you please tell us more about the sitting trot. Do you move your hips separately? Do you pull your hips up with the movement or do you think of pushing them and if so, when? For example: do you pull your right hip up when the right hindleg leaves the ground? It would also be great if you could talk about how to use the psoas muscles.

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 9 lety +4

      Joanien Pieterse Hi Joanien and welcome! You are over thinking this! After you read my explanation please watch the video again. I talk and demonstrate how to use your hips. Please read my description, copy, above too as I go over this thoroughly.
      Basically, when you are riding the walk and a big, energetic walk, can you feel your hips, pelvis, being moved by the horse? If you can, this is where you need to start! If you can't feel your hips/pelvis move you are stuck, tight, and need to practice feeling (not thinking) the horse's rhythm/stride take your pelvis into movement. I recommend buying a pilates ball should you need additional help opening up your hips.
      So, you will not be moving your hips. You will be allowing the horse to move your hips/pelvis. If your core (tummy) muscles are weak, allowing the horse to take your pelvis into movement and you practicing tightening those muscles to slow the horse down and then relax those muscles so the horse is free to move will help strengthen your core.
      You want to be able to ride in movement with your horse as well as take away movement, meaning you will get your core so strong and your communication/aids so clear that your horse can hear them and learn to respond to them.
      I demonstrate this more in my Biomechanics DVD:Biomechanics of Riding with a Balanced, Independent Seat
      www.shoppingcartdepot.com/c/RH-2011/products/DVD-Single-Biomechanics/7l7V707k7Z2
      Hope that helps! Let me know. Warmly, Caroline

      +Angela Hales Hi Angela and Welcome! Bucking can mean many things: physical issues (spine, lack of balance), saddle fit issues, emotional agility, attitude. I would begin assessing each one of these and in the order they are presented. I would need to see you ride, observe the interaction and dynamics, before I make a blank statement as to what the cause is and how to fix it.
      I have students all over the World and because of this I offer long distance coaching and video assessments: riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/long-distance-coaching/.

      Try a walk in the pasture or yard first. Then try a couple walk trot transitions. If you feel good at this point, try a little canter. Keep the horse's adrenaline somewhat low. It is easier than you might think, especially on a plump, confident, and brainy horse like Sundance here.

    Curious what type of piece your using with the bridle. I ride western but my mare isn't a big bit fan and she's been in mechanical hackamore even before I bought her. She's real respectful of it But I've realized instead of it making her break at the poll it's puts pressure to make her head come up. She does a lot of head tossing but in just a halter she responds a lot better. I wasn't to worried since she was just going to be used for pleasure but now as I've pushed her since I've bought her I've realized she really has the want to go and do more. So I'd thought I'd take the time to go back and correct how she holds her head. And really get her leads down.

      Hi Gacha and Welcome!

      @@monki5471 Hi Noran! I look forward to helping you! There's plenty to study at home while you can't be with your horse. Mental preparation is just as important if not more than physical practice. Both are necessary to creating that "2nd nature" reflex where you don't have to think about it, you just do it. How you might ask? The more you think about the action the easier it is to embody the feel and the movement. The key of course is learning the right action or movement. A tangible and unrelated example is learning to drive a car. I remember my instructor talking to me about the power of visualization and how necessary it was to preventing potential accidents. We couldn't "practice the accident" but I could think about 2-3 scary situations that would help prepare me for if or when they might happen. Such as an oncoming car. What would I do if a car was driving straight towards me? I could think about how I should react, what would be the best way to react that would not endanger me or the other person. So, while you are home and cannot visit your horse and practice, study the movement you want to learn to ride or study how to develop your horse's movement so you can ride it. I offer online training courses that teach you all of this as well as develop your horse - check it out www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/mastery-membership-regular

      So many of us are missing the essence of relationship in our horsemanship.

    Caroline-I have watched two of your videos on youtube and love what you say, how you train, and how you ride. I am unsure, however, of what your legs are doing, for example, when transitioning from sitting trot to canter. I understand the emphasis on the seat, but I didn't see your outside leg as you moved from trot to canter. Can you comment on that? Thanks and I look forward to watching more-especially the series about safe trail riding.

      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 9 lety

      Hi Linda! Thank you. I think I mention in the video about my legs and where they should be. If I didn't I apologize and will offer that information now. When riding, my legs are as quiet and long as possible. Bareback offers more of a challenge given there is no saddle to hold your seat or legs in place. When I loose my balance I sit back and squeeze very gently with my thighs, sometimes I bring my legs up a bit, whatever it takes to re-position/re-balance myself in a second or two. If you see my calf against my horse (I know I talk about this in the video) it's for more advanced riding and used for the shoulder in - to life the rib and shoulder. Other than that your leg should be quiet and your seat the captain or driver - not your leg. I use leg only for advanced movements and again when riding bareback you need to concentrate on keeping your seat as balanced as possible which requires a long leg to pull your seat deep into the horse's back. Please know that 99% of instructors will tell you to use your leg to drive the horse forward as well as hang on when bareback. I teach differently and focus on developing a truly independent and balanced seat in the rider. My method of using aids when riding teaches a high level of communication and connection between horse and rider where the softness and subtly of aids is achieved. Thanks again for your great question! Warmly, Caroline

    Your Sundance is gorgeous. You are are harmonious pair. I have a grey mare named Caroline. :) We use a Parelli bareback pad, but I'd love to find a grey one like yours. Where did you find it, may I ask? Thank you for sharing this beautiful video!

      Hi MrsTony Saprano and Welcome! Thank you and too cool! The bareback pads I recommend, promote and use can be found on my website: riderhorsemanship.com/product/bareback-pad-heavy-duty-trainer/. From there it will take you to the manufactures page where you can order and select the color of your choice, including grey.
      I too have used the Parelli pad and loved them and then I found this one and it's bigger and more padded.
      Hope it works for you! Warmly, Caroline

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 2 lety

      Hi Naunette! You should never be thrown forward in any movement, gait, of your horse. 2 things happen that cause us to be thrown forward: 1) our horse is heavy on the forehand, and leaning forward. This means they do not have enough hind end balance; 2) you are not balanced of sitting in your center of gravity. I explain how to develop both in my video library, Bitless & Balanced Riding Course and MasteryMembership Riding Foundation Program. I like your video. I am 6ft 2inches tall with long legs, and all my horses (5 of them!) are Oldenburg, Holsteiner, and Hanoverian 16.3hh to 17.3hh. The angle of my knee is MUCH more open than yours is.....my legs are almost straight when riding without stirrups, and I am sitting very much on my seat bones/back pockets and NOT the front of my croach. I have experimented by closing the angle by having shorter stirrups, but find it takes me further away from the horses back, and if fine when taking the light forward jumping seat. It seems my hips are very open, and I have to think about closing my knees onto the saddle when jumping or X counrty canter work. What are our thought on this? Is this "openness of my hips good or bad? My seat never leaves the saddle in canter, but just my hips "swing" in rhythm with the canter. ( I am a classically trained Dancer with may account for my openess in my hips. I have bee told OFTEN by various instructors to turn my feet and legs to be more parallel.....cant maintain the position as it seems so unnatural!!

      +Keith Bartlam Hi Keith and Welcome! I understand your situation and yes, it sounds as though you are riding correctly and with a wonderfully open and fluid pelvis. It also sounds to me like your instructors do not know what they are talking about. I come across these questions with many of my students, whether you are a woman or man. Bottom line, everyone's body is designed uniquely. Firstly, I'd like to talk about the differences between a man's pelvis and a woman's. A man's pelvis is more narrow and straight, not tilted. A woman's is wider and tilted and for child bearing purposes. I am assuming you are a 6'2" man? If so, when you mount, with or without a saddle, you should sit on the saddle (or bareback) as if you are standing. This is easy for men as the male pelvis axis (center of hip socket) is right in the middle. This makes it very easy for men to balance when riding - unlike a woman who's pelvis/hips are tilted. She must find her balance point in order to feel balanced.
      As you sit like this your legs will hang as you mentioned. This is normal and correct! Bottom line is to find a stirrup length that allows your leg to hang low, with a slight bend in the knee. Your toes should be forward, not out or in and your foot resting gently in the stirrup - no brace. With longer stirrups, the deeper you sit (heavy seat) and longer your leg, the easier it will be for your feet to stay connected to the stirrup (w/o falling out). If you are jumping, just raise the stirrup enough for you to get into a 2 point.
      I hope I've helped!
      Warmly,
      Caroline

      Yes. Thank you (I am a man Keith is a man's name!) I find my legs are almost strait down hanging as if standing.All instructors (in past ) have been women so guess they dont know or take into account the difference between men and women! I ignored them anyway which was just as well then!

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 8 lety +4

      Hi Elsie and Welcome! This video is about learning to sit the trot, not master the extended or working trot. This means we go slow, start from the beginning and build. In life, as a human, we must learn to crawl as a baby before we can walk and learn to master the walk before we can run. This of course has so much to do with balance.
      When teaching, and learning, we need to be presented with building blocks and that is what this video is all about. We take it slow, master that level so we are in the best position to move forward and learn the next level. Warmly, Caroline

      Hi Stephanie and Welcome! Sorry, but I don't see where my mare looks angry. Please be more specific and let me know which minute you see her looking angry?
      Perhaps you are misinterpreting her expression. Her ears are relaxed and flopping at her sides and/or pulled back listening to me. Her body is relaxed and loose too, all signs of relaxation and focus. If she were angry she would have pinned ears, big worried eyes and a tight, pensive body.

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 7 lety +4

      Hi Stephanie. The degree of "ears back" on my mare represent relaxation, focus and ease. If she were angry her ears would be pinned against her neck, her eyes wide with fear or hostility and her body tight, rigid, defensive. She does not express (show) any of those negative feelings only positive. Great question, Thank you!

    • @0316asdfjkl
      @0316asdfjkl Před 4 lety

      She doesnt look angry. She does look extremely stiff. Looks like her back end isn't engaging well. She's falling out of the canter and wants to be disjointed. I think after she's warmed up she'd be fine.
