  • This is a 10-day adventure in the Bighorn Backcountry (Job/Cline Public Land Use Zone "P.L.U.Z" ) and the White Goat Wilderness.
    Along the way we ford Coral Creek, the Brazeau River and the Cline River. We also crest Grey Pass (2,575 m), Red Pass (2,850 m) and Cline Pass (2,375 m).
    This is a very remote, seldom visited part of the eastern slopes. Horses are not allowed in White Goat wilderness, so the trails are overgrown. Travelling in these parts requires some advanced trail finding skills.

    It took me a long time to edit this video. As you'll notice, I didn't actually have a lot of footage. Neither did Geoff and JT. The days were long and often miserable, and I didn't really feel like filming. At first I thought I didn't have enough material to make a good video, but in the end I'm happy with how it turned out. I added slide that show our path up some of the obstacles. I added my GPS track in the description.

    Another great video. The addition of the red line (e.g. 7:21 mark) to show the route is very helpful. Thank you.

    Nice video Marty. Turned out really good with the compilation of videos and photos. It’s also a bit different than what you normally publish. Great trip.

    So enjoyed this video!! Love the video plus still shots. A hikers perspective, no drone footage!! Appreciate the route lines on a few shots. And really like your use of music, right style and not too much. Can’t say enough of how much I love your photography, videography and editing! Looks like a stunning area❤

      Thank you so much. I've been doing this so long, that I often lose my inspiration. It took me a while to make a video from this trip because, as I mentioned, I broke my camera and didn't record a lot. I had to get creative with the still photographs and the editing. I've also noticed over the years that I film less when I'm with others than I do when I'm alone. I think it's because I prefer to spend time socializing. On this trip none of us filmed a lot or took many pictures because the days were long, and often miserable. Cheers. I really appreciate your positive feedback.

    I've been looking forward to seeing the video about this trip. What a beautiful area. I appreciate the red trail markings you put on the photos, I'd like to visit that area around Job Lake some day. That section between the Brazeau loop and Cline pass can be pretty miserable.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The section between Brazeau and Cline was definitely miserable, with lots of trail finding. To me, the worse section is definitely following Cataract creek. I hate that section. Must be 100+ fallen trees, making it impossible to gain momentum.

    Wow the color on the way to Coral Lakes on the mountains was looking so nice. Quite the workout it seemed to get up and over however! I'd love to be the ranger at that Job Lake Patrol Cabin, the backcountry cabins seldom look that nice here. Beautiful trip, too bad the damage to the gopro I'd imagine there was some beautiful shots! Are those wild horses? Noticed the bells, here in the states there are some places trying to cull the wild horse packs. O and thanks for your words on the troops that have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy. Keep it up!

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Those aren't wild horses. They belong to an outfitter. They just let them graze in the area. They train the horses to come back every morning by feeding them oats.

      I'm already at my weight limit on 10-day trips. Every extra ounce starts to make a difference. Also, you'll notice that on long trip like this I actually don't record a lot of footage. We're just so busy walking and doing chores. All our days were 8-10 hours of walking, often bushwacking. It's exhausting.

  • @stacymiller4903

    Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. I’m wondering why that horse had a bell on it? Keep the bears away?

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci

      Just easier to find them is they wander too far. They're hobbled, so they don't go too far. Horses naturally want to head home, so te outfitter just needs to put a fence on the trail heading back.

    Hey Marty, at the start of your hike, in the parking lot, you mention that you'll be exiting along McDonald (Creek). But you guys finished along the Cline River. Any reason for your change in plans? Thanks.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci

      We took a zero day at my buddy's cabin, so that messed up our food supply. Going via McDonald Creek would have required an extra day, which we lost on day 4. I was never really keen on the McDonald creek option for two reasons. It would have been a tedious bushwack, especially after seeing that area earlier this summer. It also would have required a ford of the Cline downstearm of where we forded on day 9, and I didn't think we'd be able to. If we had been unable to ford, we would have required a whole extra day to exit via the north Cline.

    Another gem Marty. I might have to look at this one for 2025. What time of year did you hike it? I’ve heard the Brazeau can be a sketchy ford if it’s possible at all. You clearly made it though.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Aug 4-14. We had to look hard for a spot to ford the Brazeau on Day 7. Like I said in the video, a little bit of rain and me might have been blocked.

    That cabin looked sweet. How much did 10 days of food weigh?

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci

      czcams.com/video/DgDByLWGxZc/video.html Not quite 1.5 lbs/day. We each had less than 15 lbs of food.

    I would like to hear you comment on the recent event in Banff where the two people were mauled to death. I wonder if the e readers they were using set the bear off? My Dad had a similar thing happened to him in the 1960 s skinny old bear in the fall but my Dad had a gun. I'm sure everyone would like to avoid a situation like that.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci

      I only know what I heard in the news reports. It just sounds like a very rare occurrence. An old, desperate bear, looking for easy food, attacked two people.

    Been looking forward to this video! That alpine region of samson lake/job lake has had me intrigued for years! The red lines showing the route was a great add.
    I have a question…that bridge over the Brazeau you walked on before you headed up to Cline Pass…is that the one before 4 point camp? If so, is it still intact all the way across? Couldn’t quite see if it was from the low angle of the shot. Just curious cuz I’m planning a loop trip through whitegoat hopefully next summer and my exit will take me down to that bridge to finish the loop on the Brazeau trail.
    Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your videos.
    Also look forward to your weekly cameos on Clyde’s podcast, you two make a good combo!
    Sending seasons greetings to you and your fam from Jasper!

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes, that bridge is the one about 4 km north of the Four Point campground, and it does go across. There's a trail all along the east side of the Brazeau. I just crossed to see how the trail was. We actually stayed on the west side of the river and forded about 2.4 km further. If you plan a trip to the White Goat, you need FordingRiver's new map.

    • @TroyOfTheWild
      @TroyOfTheWild Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for the info Marty. The trip I'm planning would take me down to that exact trail on the East side of the Brazeau, good to see that old horse camp still in good order. Just the beta I needed, Thanks!
