It’s really worth listening to the version of this song that’s on the soundtrack album too! The film actually cuts out another chorus and bridge section after Vanessa’s verse and these add SO much to the song - I feel like in the film they really don’t earn the key change at all, whereas the full track takes way more time over it.
I just love how it starts to introduce some harmonic uncertainty with a sharp-V chord in the beginning of the bridge (the tonic key is Eb so the B major) and then the bass and drums just keep driving, maintaining that suspense, until the key change comes and everything just opens up and it’s so damn cathartic.
Sorry for the long comment, keep up the good work mate!

In reality, Vanessa was singing the song, but in his mind, he was seeing and hearing Alexandra.

there is an amazing version of this song sang by the great Raúl Esparza, who played Jonathan Larson on the stage version in 2001. Check it. It is amazing!

You should react to Sunday from Tick Tick Boom, it's a who's who of Broadway

Hi Jacob. The context is that Karessa is part of the group of performers that Jonathan has assembled to present his show's songs to potential financial backers at a workshop. Jonathan, however, initially sees Susan singing directly to him about their rapidly deteriorating relationship. It then switches back and forth between these two exquisite ladies singing and ends up with Karessa closing the number with the applause that follows. The editing between the two is seamless. A couple of other things. Bradley Whitfield is playing Stephen Sondheim and at one point he tilts his head and puts one hand on his chin. It's exactly what the great man did at times. The other thing is that, personally, I think that Vanessa looks smashing. The subtle makeup and full hairstyle that she sports here are so much different from her usual look. I think it really works for her.

By the way, this is a song from the original Superbia, Lin-Manuel had to get special permission to get this scene on the movie
