    Rough translation for anyone wondering.
I turn around and see my home disappear
My time back at home now feels to me, far too short
Only a youth, barely a man when duty called.
If I will see my home again, That I do not know
Among kinsmen from my village, I went out into battle
    And the world burns.
    Because the war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will miss me?
    So see me like this
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who mourns me?
Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there, death awaits, no heroism
On the fields where kinsmen fall, no song is heard
    Challenging our destinies, once again
    Far from home
Be baptized and die in battle
    And the world burns
    Because the war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will miss me?
    So see me like this
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who mourns me?
And when my time has run out
    Who will care?
    They fight on
Does a soldier get a dignified end?
    Fall asleap.
    Fade away
    And never wake up
    Because the war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will miss me?
    So see me like this
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who mourns me?
    Because the war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will miss me?
    So see me like this

    But who mourns me?

The song contain several words that (to my knowledge) can't be translated to English.
There is official subtitles in English to this song, but they don't do it justice.
The most noteble is 'faderland' which easily translates to 'fatherland'. The subtitles just say 'home county' but that isn't the same.
In the Swedish language we have fatherland, motherland and home country.
Motherland= the country where you grew up.
Home country= where you currently live.
Fatherland= the place where you got your religion, ideology, culture and mentality from.
One example: "Swedish" people fighting for ISIS might be Swedes in every way exept their fatherland.
Right or wrong, fatherland is the place/country you're prepared to fight and die for (how you wish that all countries was). Yes, this was a simplification!
My personal Fatherland is Denmark but i never lived outside Sweden!

The written lyrics (in English) is simplefied to avoid writing a text that takes hours to read.
Some words can't be translated and this song contain several such words.
Simply said: it's about fighting for your belief (not for the king or country or even family). DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE!
The Swedish word 'faderland' is cultural (my God, my belief, my ideology..). The English translation is 'my home country' 👎
As a native speaker i know the exact meaning. Do or die!

Sweden was attacked by the rulers of todays Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lituania and Russia simultaneously (Estonia and Latvia was a part of Lituania, and Norway was a part of Denmark). We/Sweden did however rule Finland.
This song is about ONE person that was called to defend his culture and king (the king was said to be chosen by God).
Against overwhelming forces, Sweden/Charles XII/ Karl XII/ Carolus Rex subdued everyone except Russia (close but no cigar).
I know Swedish and history. This is my favorite song ever ('Carolus Rex' is nr 2).
Who could argue with 'i don't listen to the church, i was chosen by God' (a bold statement for a 15y old).

Although having heard this song at least 100 times it always moves me. I discovered Sabaton during the pandemic, so I am relatively new to the party. Their songs always tell a great story and the lyrics usually have deeper meaning. I am so happy I will be able to see Sabaton live about 100miles from my home on April 2nd, 2022. They are the head-liners and the arena will be similar in capacity to this one only not in Sweden. It will be awesome since Sabaton has a quite a big following in Germany.

  • @MrRedMane
    @MrRedMane Před 3 lety +6

The part about this song that always intrigued me was that the Swedish and English versions of this song tell 2 different view points of the same story. Swedish being from the view point of a soldier being sent to the war, and the English version being an outsiders perspective.

  • @jmetallover
    @jmetallover Před 3 lety +1

As a vet the lyrics of this song just rock you....they speak to anyone who has ever served in battle no matter the war, here the 30 year war (1618-1648) but it is about every war before and since. While the English translation is not exact the theme is in your face. The fear and terror of war destroys not just those in it but those that have a loved one serving. That is what makes Sabaton so magical, history isn't a dusty book full of stories, it is the human experiences of those that were caught up in those moments and long forgotten, but no to Sabaton as they bring alive the full human emotions of those moments and the impact it had on those involved. Enjoy the show Doug, be safe and catch the memories in your ears not just your camera!!!

"Fury in the Slaughterheouse" are a German Rock-Pop band from Hannover. In 2017 they played three sold out 30th anniversary shows in front of 12.000 people each time. I did full shows and when the played e.g. "Time to wonder" it was like here. And although I was only the photographer taking the shots and it was such an incredible experience seeing and hearing the crowd from on stage. And as I grew up with their music and as I knew the lyrics word by word it was so difficult not to sing withe the fans and the band.

This song is about the 30 years war, a war were swedish men lived a lifetime at war as 30 years was the average age of man back in those days. The swedish version is from a swedish soldiers pov and the english from a european pov. It was that world war before world wars. It was huge. I bet a lot of american descendants ancestors fled europe exacly because of this war.
Edit: Swedne was an empire back then, believe it or not Fuinland was a part of Sweden back then too so one has to keep that in mind that when talking about sweden back then, we also mean what is Finland today.

I know you will enjoy the show in Dallas. This is a awsome band. I hope that you will be able to see them here in Sweden. I was in that crowd and i get goosebumps every time i see this video.

Well, it is in Sweden, and En Livstid I Krig is the Swedish Version of probably the most Swedish song Sabaton ever wrote [the struggles of Swedish soldiers in the first Great War, the 30 year war].
It is the best possible setting. But still, that crowd is amazing.

You should react to it again with subtitles! They are hella deep since the swedish version of the song focuses on the perspective of a soldier, instead of the battle as a whole.

Bruce dickinson once said a remark about ozzfest after being in sweden just before, its not like having 10.000 vikings singing your songs. So it might not just be that it is the homecrowd, we know how to sing to good music! ;)

Hm Göteborg (Gothenburg) is far away from their hometown. Sweden is a long country. But same country and yes al understand the lyrics. And yes we share this history of war and lifeloses even if we the last decades have had peace. But this song about our ancestors cross the heart. I cry every time listen.

Blind Guardian at Wacken 2016 with "The Bard's song & Valhalla". It will blow you away as well. I get tears every time seeing this.
And if you are quite while passing Wacken ground, you can still hear them singing

Dude man, i was at an iron maiden concert at the olympic stadium in helsinki and sabaton was one of the warmups along with Ghost, i tell you, i was a bit disapointed when maiden took the stage, coz sabaton delivered. My buddy first introduced me to it in like 2008 or something with Primo Victoria and the d-day footage on youtube. I went a small-venue concert in Rytmikorjaamo in Seinäjoki, Finland, altough i was hammered as fuck, it was a great experience when brought in some 1800 century soldiers for their swedish songs. Im just telling you, even if you listen to them as warmups for judas priest, wich btw is a great band, youll not get disappointed 🤟

It's always something special if you see such a big crowd interact. And as you mentioned Queen ... take a look at "Greenday Crowd sings Bohemian Rhapsody live in Hyde Park 2017" ... as they stated in the comments: Queen is the only / on of the few bands who doesn't have to appear to give concerts ;)

This one is from the Carolus Rex album, so it has both a Swedish and English text. But unlike most of the other songs (except 1648) it's not the same in Swedish and English.
The Swedish version tells the story of the 30 years war from a Swedish soldiers point of view. The English Version takes a wider view, from a neutral observers point and talks more about the politics of the war. (1648 is about the siege of Prague, the English version is from the inhabitants point of view, the Swedish version is from the Swedish soldiers point of view)

If only people we're as good at pointing out the importance of turning on the captions if the video have it as they are att recommending the video itself. I'm subscribed to many of the best and most popular reaction channels and funny enough those I've seen doing this video with captions and other videos where captions are recommended has mostly been less popular channels I'm not subscribed to yet, because they were told and reminded by their subscribers beforehand :P We can only blame ourselves on this.

I was at this show and it was a fucking awesome night, I was sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage. Sadly this was just before covid broke out and started canceling shows (I had for once planed 4 shows and 1 festival for that year) En livstid i krig = a lifetime of war. Just before this clip started Joakim asked everyone to hold up their cellphones since no one carries around a lighter anymore.
