  • Hi, everyone! Welcome back!
It's hard to find puzzles today that are as well-built as a vintage Springbok. While I'm not a big fan of many of the images on vintage puzzles, there are certainly quite a few gems, and I think this is one of them. This is Aviary Birds, a 1968 Springbok Okta Puzzle with artwork by Dr. William Dilger. The series is called Okta because the puzzles have an octagonal shape. The puzzle touts 'over 500 pieces,' but I think it's around 516-520.
This lovely puzzle came to me in an exciting way. Last Friday, I came across a yard sale flyer that someone had shared on a local Facebook puzzling group. The flyer announced a 'most unusual yard sale' with 'hundreds of vintage Springbok and Eaton puzzles.' Needless to say, I was very interested. I got there right at opening and was the first person there for 6-7 minutes. That early arrival allowed me to snag several rare-shaped puzzles. It's not unusual to come across shaped vintage puzzles at a thrift store, but certain designs are harder to find. This gentleman was selling several for no more than $3! I left the sale with 5 shaped puzzles and 3 rectangular/square ones. I made the mistake of Googling a few of the ones I left behind the next day and realized that one that I didn't get was selling for $150. I picked up this one, Good ol' Cherry Pie, Little Red Riding Hood's Hood, Spectrum of Red, to name a few. All look to be in pretty good condition.
This puzzle came together nicely. The previous owner had bagged the edge separately from the rest. I did something I never do and went ahead and left them sorted. I don't think I've ever done that before; I always break apart completed pieces and mix everything together. I wasn't feeling like doing a big sort on this one, so you'll see that I don't fully sort this puzzle at any point. Quality-wise, this puzzle was so well-made. The pieces fit together so nicely, you can easily move small and large sections around, and it easily passes the pickup challenge (even one-handed!). The pieces had a funky random cut that I loved, and the backing had a really nice red color to it. The cardboard is quite thick and has a satisfying feel when you put the pieces together. The only thing I didn't really care for was the semi-gloss finish, so I had to tilt to the side sometimes to look past a glare. If you've never tried a vintage Springbok, I highly recommend it. They are such wonderfully made puzzles and have some of the coolest mid-century box designs.
