It wasn't the 4th of July without The Beach Boys. "Ladies and gentlemen ... your band, our band, America's band ... The Beach Boys."
Such a complex history and story. To hear them at possibly their height of dysfunction make music that was so heartfelt, sincere, and complex at the same time is truly a privilege!!!
I was lucky enough to see The Beach Boys a few times while Dennis and Carl were still around. Although the band will never be the same, It's great that Brian, Al, and Al's son Matt are touring with Chicago this summer. Any Beach Boys fan should try to catch the show this summer. It could be the last time they tour.
Saw both in Dallas. I believe it may be my last time. I saw them first in 1964 at Santa Monica Civic and many times after that always a great show. Last time I saw all the brothers together was a short 3 or 4 song after a Dodger game. They did the National Anthem also
@Artur Belo What? He’s looking left, you dingbat. He INTRODUCES BW, yet you think him looking left somehow isn’t at the person he just introduced? As Dylan said- be a nice fellow.
100%. Sadly after watching a few times I've noticed you can't actually hear Dennis in this at all, I'm not sure he's even singing. I've always felt so bad for Dennis, these days it wouldn't have been allowed to happen 😢
I saw the Beach Boys in Sydney Australia during this tour. It was raining all day. The Sydney Show Ground was totally soaked. The Beach Boys had copped lots of media flak because of Danny falling on his drums in Perth. Under pressure they produced one of the most enjoyable musical experience of my life. Everyone was dancing soaked and muddy but no one cared. It was a hoot!
How this cannot bring tears to anyone's eyes is beyond me. Mike and Dennis seemed to have a strong bond. Dennis appears to have been a bridge between Mike Love and his brothers. it looked as though Carl wanted a piece of Mike after the song but Dennis quickly intervened
It was actually Dennis who had the worst relationship with Mike. They had filed mutual restraining orders against each other right around the time of this concert. Carl is pissed at Mike, because Mike kicked Dennis' mic cord out of the aux because Dennis was fucking around with him. You can see towards the end, Dennis bends down and plugs it back in and laughs (taking it as a joke). He grabs Carl because Carl was pissed about him doing that with the equipment and messing the harmony up. You can see Carl still kind of yelling at Mike as Dennis pulls him into a bow.
Story is Mike hated Dennis because Dennis had an affair with Mikes daughter that’s why Carl got between them you can see Dennis giving mike the business singing and Mike appeared to not be in the mood
On occasion I run into Dennis’ son, and I am so happy to talk with someone who truly appreciates the BB. It’s also touching how he enjoys his father’s own music with pride.
This performance in particular is so emblematic of their history. Everything seemingly ok prior to the song. The song itself is masterfully done, as always. As soon as the music stops, Carl appears set to kill Mike for something before Dennis cuts him off. Regardless of the dysfunction, they could always turn it off just long enough to make beautiful music.
Mike has unplugged Dennis's microphone during the performance, or maybe his monitor, hence he kneels down to fix it towards the end and laughs after finding what had happened. Not sure when he unplugged Dennis, I think the camera was on Carl at the time.
That's the fastest I've ever seen Carl move... " running" over to kill Mike, at the end. Denny and Al grasped hands, to create an obstacle and Mike looks completely oblivious of what he's done, to incur Carl's wrath!

I don’t mean to say Dennis was an angry or aggressive person generally. Just that if someone picked a fight with him, Dennis was much more likely than Carl to fight back physically. David Marks told a story about how his dad had to intervene once in a physical altercation between Dennis and Murry. Pretty sure Carl was not throwing punches at his dad (even if Murry 100% deserved it).
