  • "An advanced city is not the one where even the poor use cars, but rather the one where even the rich use public transport."
Our roads suffer a lot more than what they are supposed to endure but is that all that is there to think about when with rapid urbanisation, Indian roads are getting gridlocked? WION's Priyanka Verma, Kamran Ahmad and Abinov Raina tell us the story.

Need to start designing cities for people instead of cars.
India will realize the mistakes it is making like 50 years from now.
America made these mistakes in 1970s

America did not make a mistake , the lifestyle Americans have is unmatched . Huge houses in beautiful suburbs , everyone owns cars and can drive anywhere to work or anyplace else

There are few ways to tackle this issue. India can create and underground subway system like New York City to get rid of a majority of vehicles on the roads.
India can create larger buildings like skyscrapers so that there are less people doing street vending and open store within the building. This would be a culture change also, but people have to make these changes. Maybe enforce a law to make it hard to street vend.
Create overpasses so that vehicles can drive above street level to reach their destination.
Get the animals off the city roads. They belong in healthy areas such as farms or fields. Places to roam in ease.
If farmers want to transport their animals or goods they should use trucks, instead of wagons.
To avoid vehicle pollution, the country should invest in battery powered vehicles just like how they invested in solar panels.
Most city streets were really meant for walking purposes designed by the British back in the day when there weren't many vehicles. To build sidewalks is a difficult task, but what can be done is create walking signals every where.
I really want to do something to help!

GoldenAge Philosopher well. You missed one major point. Money. Hawkers and street venders do not have close to enough money to rent space in buildings and passing laws for them to stop would be deprived a large amount of people of their jobs which in a country with a high unemployment rate, would be a mistake.
However, better public transport would help in reducing driving.

This is how the social economic system of India works. Street vendors and hawkers are part of the Indian economic strata as well. The public benefit from them as well, the solution is to create space which benefits all and not just follow the western culture blindly. Local vendors and hawkers are whom common public interact with on daily basis, its imbibed In our culture. If you make more space for cars you are gonna get more pollution.

And the solution to these solutions to become implemented is -- AWARENESS and sensitising people. But idk how hard and far we have to go to sensitise Indians, because we are hella stubborn.

@8:40 listen again what this lady said.. street vender are not problem but we never include them in urban planning is real problem.. Street vendor actually make our more safe in night, and this safe environment attract more public on sidewalk..
So jo solution hai usko hum problem samjh rahe hai, and then we wonder why our cities are fucked up..
Many european cities also have street restaurant, and we indian actually love that..
Agree they create mess in street, but if our urban planning bodies design small kiosk for them then this street vender enhance aesthetic of city..
Plus, it become easy for street food vendor to maintain hygiene and setup their business..
