Testing a CHEAP Ebay 40 series torque converter

  • We got this cheap Ebay 40 series torque converter to test out. It doesn't have the best fitment but we made it work. Despite everything we read that said not to run the driver puller with the nut towards the engine we do it anyways. Luckily it worked and I still don't know why that is recommended not to do. We got it all mounted then had to torture test it. I think it passed.

    You did great by installing the engine pulley on "backwards". By doing this, the belt centerline will be maintained between the two pulleys as the units shift. If not done this way, the belt centerline will not stay centered. It will still work, but there will be loss of power, and loss of belt life. You need to install the yellow reverse wound spring onto the driven unit, and clock the cam ramp in the opposite direction, then all will be correct.

      Thanks! Yes i looked up a few diagrams showing the driven pulley the opposite dirrection from the driver pulley. Apparently that is ok, or actually the correct way for symmetrical belt torque converters. Thanks for watching!

    What tooth count sprocket is on your jackshaft and what tooth count sprocket on your live axle? I have a 10 tooth on jackshaft but was looking to put a 17 tooth sprocket on and a 60 tooth sprocket on a 420cc and 40 series torque converter kit( my math says it should pull 67-72 mph with that set up) on a 1" live axle with 22x11-10 King tires on rear and 20x8-8 front tires and air shocks all around with rear swing arm and double a arms in front for off road and flat trails. I already built my frame and a arms and swing arm I'm down to the gears now and saw your video and thought I'd ask to get an idea. Thanks for the info. Kevin. Oh btw keep up the good work.

      I believe its a 10 tooth up front and probably a 60 tooth on the axle. A 17 tooth compared to a 10 tooth, the 17 will have more speed and the 10 will have more torque. Kinda up to you what you want. The 40 series torque converter weights can be adjusted to whatever gearing you pick to keep the engine at optimal rpm. Thanks for watching Kevin! 🔥🤟🔥

      @@FireAndGasoline thanks for the reply. I just got my 40 series torque converter kit with 10 tooth sprocket. I had the same issue you had with the drive clutch I had to mount it with clutch facing motor. From what my friend Larry said it don't matter which way it faces it will work the same way, the mounting plate acts like a shatter shield. I didn't have to do no mods to the mounting plate for oil dipstick I have 3/4 " space between back of jackshaft plate and dipstick. I installed a new pit bike muffler and snorkel air pipe custom made. My engine mount is 8 3/4" wide by 32" welded to 1x1 square tube due to the fact I'm running a chevy alternator to charge a riding lawn mower battery to run full function lighting brake lights air horn low beam and high beam because I'm using this in paradise as well, I'm going to try the 10 with 60 sprockets then try the 17 with 60 sprocket see witch one I like. • @FireAndGasoline
      @FireAndGasoline  Před 4 lety

      Alot of times the wheels, sprocket, bearings and brake hub get stuck on due to rust. It can be very difficult to get them off without damaging anything. I usually start with some good penetrating oil and let it soak in for atleast a few hours, maybe even spraying multiple times. You can then try again to remove them. You may need to tap on the wheel or axle with a hammer, be careful about hitting the threads its usually best to have the nut on the end. Remember hitting too hard with the hammer can cause distortion or damage to the metal. If that doesn't work you can try heating it up with a torch. This can expand the metal breaking the rust bond and allow you to remove it. After that if it dont work its gonna require more force and its likely something will end up damaged. Good luck Chris.

      Thanks John, this is probably the go kart we ride the most and it has absolutely no problems and no sign of belt wear at all. If you look up "go kart torque converter installation diagram" on Google, you will find that it is more correct than most you see. Normally the driver pulley is on the opposite way i have it and the driven pulley should be on the opposite way. Its funny because even the ones you buy that have a backing plate are not usually setup this way. They way you see most people do it is actually the incorrect way. Crazy isn't it?

      Also this is a 40 series with a symmetrical belt. If you have a 30 series with an asymmetrical belt(flat on one side tapered on the other) this is not the same. In that case both flat sides of the pulley must be on the same side.

    There's nothing wrong with the drive pulley you guys put it on wrong.

    • @FireAndGasoline
      @FireAndGasoline  Před 4 lety

      It wasn't the driver pulley that was the problem, its the way the backing plate was made. We flipped the driver pulley to make it work. Also it still works and no belt wear so its fine how it is. Thanks for watching!

      @@lizzard7473 no problem. We put the vid out here so people would know how this particular design worked. We honestly weren't sure it would work at all this way. Turns out it has been better than other setups we have. We have modified the weights inside the driver pulley but I would say its a overall good setup.
