    It's clear that bikes have progressed in the last 20 years, but, how much faster are modern day cross country bikes compared to one from 20 years ago?
    Neil and Scott decided to put it to the test.
    The moral of the story? Riding mountain bikes is fun: ride the bike that you can get your hands on.

    To make this experiment clear they have to change bikes and do it again. Too much personal factors. Last weekend there was an amateur cross country race in our city, and one more skilled sportsman on an aluminum oldschool 26" bianchi came first with an advantage of the whole lap, and left all that carbon 29"ers behind.

      maybe it should be more scientific. MTB is going the wrong direction because you have allowed the japanese to take over with new gadget after gadget that has brought very little to the sport of biking. Overpriced crap these days. Id rather have any good bike from the late 90s over this. Still have XT thumb shifters on my Giant MCM2 and i still leave modern bikes behind on the trails

    After 20 years of innovation you would expect there to be significant improvements in bike design and the comparison is very interesting. I really enjoyed the retro vs new vids that you have made. But the most important point that hasn't been recognised is that no matter what bike or kit you have, just get out there and have fun! Not everyone can afford the newest, best options, I have a colleague who is twice my age and rides a bike that I'm sure should be in a museum but he loves it and could without a doubt whip a few butts.

    • @ScreamerpipeL337
      @ScreamerpipeL337 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Exactly. Fun is still being had here. You can worry about faster times or modern day diablo trails whenever you save up for the modern. I guarantee you that in one season's practice on my retro that I'll lap my friends who blindly bought a show room modern bike and thought the bike was going to do all the work. Lol

  • @mikieson
    @mikieson Před 8 lety +173

    honestly..the old bike can be bought for probably 50$ and the carbon newer bike is probably 5k$..It was actually handling quite well..Throw some wider bars on that old bike..some better tires and it would be a lot better..Sometimes things might progress over the years but not enough to warrant the price difference..

      @saucyjack8548 Před 8 lety +12

    Would have been nice if the retro bike wasn't at a disadvantage on quality - Couldn't GMBN have found a top of the range bike with Judy SLs and XTR rather than a bike with mid-range Indy forks and LX? That must have been one of the cheapest bikes that Klein sold at the time.
    For a fair comparison to that Klein the modern bike should have been something mid-range too, e.g. forks like Recon Golds and SLX rather than a bike straight from the UCI world cup podium.

    • @MrSpamaholic

    The thing I miss most about "the good ole days" is that you had to actually know how to ride, so it was quite easy to see who the better riders were on technical stuff (bigger separation). It takes some serious skill to manhandle a 26" hardtail with 60mm front travel, v-brakes, and overinflated hard compound 1.9" tires down a tough descent when you cannot roll everything. With these modern trail bikes, people just rollover everything and the bike saves them from getting in trouble.

      @jonowee Před 8 lety

      +thechosendude Luckily it's dry so of the year where I live, but disc brakes I feel are a very welcomed safety addition to off road biking. There's only so much Koolstop salmons could do on clogged rims. On a different angle, I think wider (tubeless) tyres so that the thread and compound can do its job, are good safety improvement to any bike it'll fit in.

      @drongojonkins8945 Před 7 lety +3

      Yeah, I was thinking that too.
      Incidentally, My bike is not unsimillar to the retro in the vid - probably around 2000 model "raceline" nicely built 7000 series frame, similar geometry, old 40 or 50mm Rockshox, 24 spd, nice enough componentry. Narrow and low straight bars. Got it 2nd hand for a song.
      Ive chucked on some taiwanese 100mm remote lockout forks, taller stem, wide riser bars good tyres and nice pedals - basically corrected the geometry and modernised it for $300 - its easily as good as anything new for under $1500 IMO. I like it anyway.

      in 20 years the only "development" is electronic shifters and the pretend upgrade (fashion) to REMOVE the front deralier (which is akin to selling dentures to a baby or ice to Eskimos or whatever analogy means changing something for the sake of it to sell you more shit). although coming strongly from a bmx background I do prefer it it still is more a fashion trend than anything, you can bet some excuse will be invented to add them back in years to come.

      A 29er climbing like a beast? You need to upload a video because some friends has 29er and 26 and they can beat us on 26. Almost impossible to build a 29er below to 20lbs. I have seen they roll fast on downhill meanwhile We don't find a sharp curve. And no to mention the center of gravity on 29er is higher so it is not do stable when doing pretty hard technical downhills on fire tracks. I have seen it depends where you live and what you really want to do. I love technical tracks and long climbing. Switzerland is a nice place to do this, and I own a road bike too. Just for training but I hate paved roads 😀

    I have a 2000 Cannondale F700, it is the bike of my dreams. I bought it two years ago, I love its geometry and character, and I can say that more than one cyclist with the latest generation bikes is amazed! A while ago some guys saw my Cannondale leaving a bike shop and yelled at me that it was an obsolete bike, I turned around, walked up to them and said do you see the rainbow printed on the frame? Well, this bike won many world cups, my friend! I turned around and left, sometimes it's not the bicycles that are obsolete, but the thoughts of some people.

    I made the upgrade to a 29er Grand Canyon last year, since it is the modern bike to have. And without a modern 29er one is not able to master the local trails anymore. Yeah, got it.
    However I also used to have an old mid 90's Specialized Stumpjumper which endured a miserable ending on a Tacx roller in winter time. After watching tons of GMBN videos which explain advances in technology and biking, I've now put a wide handle bar, a 27 gear drive and a RockShox Reba Air on it. The rest is 25 years old, but the ol' Stumpy is like newborn again. Endless fun on the trails, it's like a new bike! Don't get me wrong, the Grand Canyon is an awsome bike! But it collected exactly 0 km this year. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...?

  • @tomaszzawada9191
    @tomaszzawada9191 Před 8 lety +7

    Quite fun to watch a modern xc trail being ridden on a mid-range retro mtb.
    Yeah, I know the comparison turned out to be devastating for the retro, but...
    0. It's like comparing a 2016 Ferrari 458 Italia to a 90's toyota corolla. Yeah, clearly you could see a bit of a difference :) What if you put head to head with a 1997 Ferrari 360 Modena then? Driven by a professional driver the results on a track would be similar. The old car would be lighter (and lightning fast) but difficult to handle, more predictable for a pro, impossible for a beginner. The new one would perform evenly, be lightning fast as well. Definitely showing its advantages of being easier to drive, easier to handle and able to deliver anytime for any driver.
    1. In 1997 people were already racing CF frames (e.g. Giant MCM). The frame material would not affect the that much though, as a good aluminum frame was stiff and as light as today's CF frames.
    2. In 1997 a standard front fork was Judy SL, ans the 1998 SID was just around the corner. What was that in the vid? Indy C? Indy S? No oil damper. No adjustment, 63mm travel, while Judys could be set up for 80mm.
    3. We did have XTR back in 1997. And it was fine. It already ran on first gen octalink spindle and was way stiffer and a better performer than your average crankset. Yet, no mention in the vid.
    4. In 1997 we did have powerful v-brakes (XT or XTR) that could actually brake quite well.
    5. In 1997 we did have mavic crossmax ceramic, that were light, stiff and helped maintain constant braking power. The one in the video seems to have some really nasty cheap wheelset.
    6. A 1997 world-cup grade XC bike could easily weigh around 8,5-9kg. But back then, light weight was the ultimate weapon to win a race. Today's equipment is not lighter at all. RS-1 and 29 inches cost some weight penalty, but perform way better thgoughout the race (you maintain better pace etc.). Therefore, it might have been a good idea to test a superlight 1998 XCO bike with a modern XCO performer.
    Summing up, this comparison was ridiculous. A better Idea would be a comparison of a 1997 top of the range xc machine with today's mid-range 29er. Maybe the time difference would be less obvious, but still a new 29er would win. What's funny, those machines would both be worth around $4k once new. (today's top XCO machines cost more like 10k. Epic, FSi, Spark etc).

    The challenge was almost unfair. A Rochshox indy fork was enry level and would compare to a entry level rockshox fork of today (XC 30 , 28). +Yuri Rabena You serious ? The bike difference is real but is a matter of seconds on a lap. On an easy track like this one it would be very very small anyway : No technical parts and corners are banked which mean the klein could blast them at the same speed (almost). The difference with top rider in the world would be in minutes on a 15 min lap.

    Would have been a bit better had they used an equivalent retro bike in terms of drive train and fork. He had an LX rear , a cheaper fork and that rear wheel had a freaking reflector on it which screams low end.
    Also, would be better if Neil had some time to state what he felt the old bikes weaknesses were.
    I suspect the wheel size was the biggest then the suspension fork then the handle bar.
    Still, I would love to see a real weight weenie retro build with a SID and high end wheels etc. If anything there may have been some improvement with a true weight weenie build.

    • @OsellaSquadraCorse
      @OsellaSquadraCorse Před 8 lety +2

      +Bungle2010 And the first thing anybody did was take them off.. In the last 19 years, it's still got it's original wheel...? Unlikely. Uou also missed the point slightly - that Klein with the kit on it is a middle of the range bike from 1997 vs a top-end modern (Di shifting FFS!) and that Indy fork on the Klein was commonly swapped out/binned even in 97/98!
      So what they did was race a 2015 BMW M5 against a 1997 318i... Yes, the modern bike or car etc IS faster, nobody expects any different - but it's a completely pointless video if you don't even bother to take comparative bikes..
      They could have used a Peugeot T6000 or a Zaskar, or Giant MCM (y'know, race-ready bikes) OR used an SLX-equipped Alu framed Cube, Canyon etc which at least would have made the test a bit more interesting and showed how far bikes seemingly 'the same' have actually developed in 19 years & how much faster that makes them .. THAT would have been a valid test of Retro vs Modern.

    • @schlooonginator1227
      @schlooonginator1227 Před 8 lety

      ***** Its the same here in Canada but, as the guy above metioned, anyone serious about a high end XC bike is going to toss the useless 100g stuck on their wheel or, if its an aftermarket upgrade, would likely not have the reflector in the first place, either way it indicates that that wheel is most likely a low end heavy cheap wheel.
      I am not saying this video sucked, just the opposite, I liked it, but would have been even better had it been a Klien with a SID or Bomber, with a host of old school aftermarket upgrades and a high end wheel set that a true race bike would sport.

      +Rohin Bakrania that i don't know....but look at the manufacturer's recommendation...they might not be the same for every shock and springs are usually rated for a certain weight interval....if you find a spring rated for let's say 55-60 kg,i would go with the next size up considering you weigh more with all your kit on...you'll need a bit of research to make the decision.

    I still have a 1996 Klein Comp and its my primary ride. Love the rigidity and light weight. Climbs like a monster. Stops ... well, not like a monster.

    I understand the feeling of going from 26 to 29, my 26 is fast but it becomes skittish in the trails so I have to be more careful, maybe the wheels are smaller, but my grin at the end of the trail is bigger. The 29er is easy to ride, more forgiving, but it becomes boring after a while, and is slower uphills. I wouldn't change my custom build 26er proflex for the 29er, she is faster, and have never let me down. Also she is my ride to work, an absolute pleasure to ride

    Great vid
    I had a gt zaskar frame back at the same time, with stx, - indy forks completely lock up after 1 day in the Alps (they just had foam inserts -no oil or air- they were crap even back then) the judy forks were far superior, and the bars look narrow for even that time period, most of the riding back then was far more technical, that long 29" bike with super wide bars would have trouble getting through
    Love to see a rerun with retro at more realistic level (judy fork, lx /xt sti, bit wider riser bar and more technical trail) and modern at mid level price
