  • Tent platforms are sometimes a part of a thru-hike or backpacking trip. As a hiker that prefers tarps and non-freestanding tents, this can seem like a challenge. In this video I show a few simple and effective methods that I like to use to setup my tent or tarp if I am using a tent platform.
Toward the end of the video I also added a quick look at my new Pa'lante Joey in Ultraweave fabric since I've been getting a few questions about it. Skip to the 5:57 timestamp to see that part of the video.

A marline spike works better than a clove hitch for tying off stakes because it doesn't roll.

Nice set up. I’ve been looking at sewing a palante pack myself how is it. 😊

@denismoreau3646 Thanks for watching. I’m a big fan of the Pa’lante packs. They fit me well and feel very comfortable on the trail. I love the simplicity of their packs too. They have everything I need and nothing more. Enjoy the MYOG project!

Hey, so what's your favorite Pa'Lante pack so far? This new joey looks really interesting. I own the desert and ultralight pack. How do you like your Nashville pack compared to the Pa'Lante?

@tructructructructruc My favorite has been the Joey. I’ve been coming around to the ultra mesh pockets, but still prefer the old lycra mesh on my v2 Joey made in the Robic. I love the shoulder straps and simplicity. The pack is a great size for me most of the time with the type of hiker that I am and gear preferences. I wish the other Pa’lante Packs had the running vest straps. Maybe I’ll modify a couple of them with that feature at some point.
I like using the Ultralight if I am looking for similar capacity to the Joey, but want more traditional pack straps. The V2 has been fantastic for longer hikes when more is needed. The Desert pack I have been happy with on bigger trips or hikes when there might be longer water carries, more food or if my pack is a little heavier. I’ve used it for winter thru hikes and backpacking too. The Ultraweave fabric is great! It’s a like a more robust DCF. I’ve been really happy with it on my V2 so far.
The Nashville Pack Cutaway has been working out really well so far. It’s tough to fairly compare it to the Pa’lante Packs because I don’t have as much mileage on it yet as I do the Joey and V2. Some things I like with the NP Cutaway are the custom fit you can get with the straps and pack size, the bottle pockets, the setup of the bottom pocket and the shelf pocket.
Both packs fit me well and I’m looking forward to continuing to use both out on the trails.

@@matjobin Nice. Thanks for your detailed answer! Have you tried the new Superior pack by SWD? It looks really unique compared to most frameless packs.
If you like vert style straps I can also highly recommend the french guy "Atelier Longue distance" I bought a "Hybride 30" from him and it has been amazing. You can customize pretty much anything.

@@mrtru1te No worries. I haven’t tried the new Superior packs by SWD, but I had owned and used a Superior in DCF a while back. There’s a video of that pack on my channel. The new pocket access looks interesting and the packs look really nice. They make some great gear! The outer front pocket looks almost similar in a way to what I have on my Cutaway. I’ll have to take a look at the other pack you mentioned. I’ve been looking into the Volpi Fastpack too, so that might be something else in my rotation down the line. I’m not a fan of hipbelts or frames, which is another reason I enjoy the packs I’ve been using so much. I’ll still try using the Desert pack in the winter when I can and only switch to something with a frame and belt when it is needed for the location, time of year and conditions. I love that freedom of movement and the vest strap access/weight distribution has been great!

@@matjobinI also prefer without the hip belt. Yes I saw your video on the superior a wile back.
I personally only use a pack with a hipbelt for winter trips. I own a SWD Big Wild in ultra 400 with an optional front pocket and I love it. The way the hip belt is attached to the pack allows my hips to move almost freely. And he makes the most comfortable straps that I found. So that's why I'm curious to try the superior.
Atelier longue distance is making packs with or without frames or hip belts. And the vest style straps on the packs he makes are really unique they look a bit like Nashville's but are fixed in length so you have to be careful when ordering but at the right size, they fit like a glove. I also love his attention to detail and the fact that the packs are perfectly made. Also I'm french and it's awesome to see a great cottage company here. It's really rare.
