I quickly wanna point out that it is not all runestones that unlock the location of the boss and most CZcams guides actually show the wrong type. You have to find the ones called Vegvisir runestones which means way pointer in old norse/icelandic. They are most common in burial grounds but I also found one near a ruined tower. Just want to correct this cause a lot of youtubers have made this mistake with their guides.
You can also place campfires all around the platform to make him take fire damage at all time
Ya its also good to do that to keep away grey dwarfs from interrupting your fight
Make sure you clear out all the spawners near the boss site they will jump you while you are trying to kill the elder
First time today I took on The Elder. I tried the 'hole under the platform'. I suspect the developers fixed this as his stomps took me right out. Now all my good stuff is in a hole guarded by 'The Elder'. I've rebuilt my stuff and going to go back with a more traditional 'hide behind pillars' approach. Be warned.
Thanks m8! I realized halfway through the fight his destructive energy could be harnessed for gathering. I summoned him again and he helped me gather insane amounts of wood and 38 copper!
I simply dug out a trench around the altar platform. The Elder was unable to leave and I shot him from a distance. The only attack able to reach that far were the vines. Standing behind a hill, I was untouchable. Didn't even need to move.

The tunnelling underneath idea is good! But I remember Hatfilms when they faced this boss basically tunnelled a cross underneath it so they could pop out at different angles once the Elder was near to one entrance, I feel it'd work well in this situation too, hell could even put a campfire and bed underneath it too, even though it'd take a while to setup
Head off into the forest a bit and The Elder will do quite a bit of wood chopping for you, as long as you're comfortable dodging flying trees. Like Kysen implied, the gopher cheese is not at all necessary, and will just draw out an already long fight.

I did the non-cheese method and it worked quite well. I took more of a beating than you did because 3 or 4 times when he summoned the roots I got stuck in a pile of them and they walloped me. But I never died, and I was always over 30 health. Thanks so much for the video.
I just stood on the edge of this entire area, the elder won't chase closer, so don't need to worry about the roots. Then I just shot arrows at him. When he shoots plants I just move left and right to dodge them.
Digged myself under the platform. There was water but i could still use my weapons. The Ent was also able to hit me with hit stomps tho, even when under the platform. He also managed to spawn those roots in my trench entrance. Fight took ages for me as I needed to regen HP when he managed to hit me through the platform without warning. Bowing and dodging was the solution in the end. Beware
I get the locations in dungeons...thanks for a good video. I play Valheim on my channel as well.
He put out all my fires right away, took almost no damage from them. I had twice as many as the video. I made a room under the shrine, set up a workbench. Good place to snipe fire arrows from but his stomps almost got me.

My way is build some buildings near boss spawn,and keep a long distance until it start attack buildings,then I spam arrows :p

I know this is late, but in my world the elder arena spawned in the middle of a river! The entire platform is submerged under water and I can't stand on it. I'm trying to terraform the ground around the arena but it's sooo much extra work!!!

I found an evil way to kill him. Get on top of one of those towers. Pelt it with arrows without getting hit. Might be just the way i was hidden behind the round bit at the top but I didn't get hit once.

Yeah just like trolls, If the troll from the troll cave is outside, u can hide on its entrance and not get hit and u wont take damage even if he smash or throw stones there xD
You didn’t use Eikthyr ability. Helps maintain stamina.

Built an entire WWI style trench under that structure to kill that guy when this game first came out. The only boss I actually had to cheese, b/c trolls kept coming out of the forest. I'm not dodging trolls and the elder's roots at the same time... Wish they'd nerf this guy, or stop mob spawn during boss fights. Went from using a wooden shield and axe with the first guy to having to completely cheese this one. 3rd one was pretty conventional as the first, except a few brews were necessary, the fire guys were really annoying but I had the gear to not get overwhelmed. 4th dude was only easy b/c I could use the same tactics as the elder, pickaxe a layer down and heal when necessary. These bosses were so weird, the final boss was probably the one one I felt was truly fair, except the random bug thing that would join the fight, threw off the entire fight. Going to play another playthrough, no idea if any of these bosses were made harder or not, so here we go.

Great tips, thank you. Does anybody know if i can switch between my special abilities? I really like Eikthyr, when i replace it with the wood cutting skill from the Elder can i go back? By using the shrine again maybe? Thanks guys!
Yes you can switch. Go to the spawn point once you've placed your trophies there and press E whilst looking at the trophy you want active. It'll say when you've done it 🙂

The best way to beat it is to litteraly stand on one of the pillars. It cant attack you.

When he spawn sneak behind and use knife, you will get massive critical hit on him, and build fireplace around he will get fire damage.
Hahaha...

@@Kysen True! My mate and I built an outpost in Black forest on the border with swamps with a smelter, kiln and forge in it. Gave us a base to work from collecting iron, then once we had a decent amount we loaded it on the boat and sailed back to our main base. Worked pretty well.

You had to elder locations? weird i thought it was just one.
I always bum rush the spawners and destroy them for 1 ancient seed simply because I have SOOOOOO MANY of them on my beginner island. With lvl 3 troll gear you can run around the black forest and not worry about anything except trolls, but they're still easy.

Ah yeah I had that issue with one of my altar locations. There will be other altar locations you'll just have to keep checking runestones until a new one shows up on your map

Stomp does go through the platform and hit you.....
If you're having trouble soloing Elder Boss, just clear up any Greydwarf Lairs, Giants and anything else that might mess with your 1v1.
Otherwise, if everything's clear, using only shield and sword and good stamina regen, you can slash at him in between taking cover behind the columns from his ranged attack, and the AOE roots attack. You can counter his melee foot stomp, although it's not going to increase your damage output, but it will keep you from getting damage yourself.
After figuring out this method, it was easy peasy and not hard at all.
PS: I was using all bronze armor, bronze sword and bronze spear. All level 1.
if i summoned him once, but wasn't able to defeat him will i have to gather ancient seeds again to summon him or will he still be there?
if you didn't kill him then he should still be there I believe. That's been my experience at least, let me know if yours differs :)

@@Kysen yup he'll still be there. I'm curious though after say for example a week's worth of in game days does he despawn? I suspect he doesn't but figured it's worth the ask.

@@3therea11 it did spawn roots in the tunnel when i was playing, but i had no water so i think my boss spawner was higher

Imagine if they handled the deaths like dark souls. As in if you die en route to your grave, you lose everything.
I thought it was like that so when I went back into a crypt after 4+ deaths I didn’t expect to find my stuff but I did later on when I got bronze

This guy is in tier 3 armor.. Ill put it into perspective, elder is meant to be completed relatively easily in bronze armor ( tier 2)..
actually its way easier to just run from pole to pole not digging this stupid hole imo :) you can get trapped down there with a root so just ru nfrom pole to pole and hit him with fire arrows.

Is there a reason why so many people use bows for everything? A decent shield and a weapon kills things far faster and with less danger (counter then critical hit while stunned)
May not be that good for bosses, but things like the brutes or even trolls are easy and quick with a shield.
Thought the same. I mean it is fun to just snipe everything from a distance but not at all necessary.
@@mikkelolesen6292 Yeah I agree it can be fun, but I do see a lot of "tutorials" and "guides" that basically say "You MUST use a bow on X" but honestly a decent shield timed correctly will almost always be more effective and result in less damage taken.
@Kemia Koro killing monster from a long distance is safer in my opinion, when i found deathsquitos they oneshotted me in melee range but with the bow u can oneshot them too with 0 risk from miles away.
kysen misleads you. reading random runes tones will not tell you where to find the elder. click on the small stones on towers and in burial chambers. the one he showed you is aesthetics and utterly useless.
