  • Stepan is a character that changes quite a bit over the course of the novel, while Pyotr remains the steady same revolutionary. Stepan goes from being a lackey and a moocher, to someone who demands self-respect and is willing to serve the public in thwarting the revolution. He fails, but the failure transforms him. Pyotr has political and persona reasons to pursue radical change and commit acts of violence. We will see that the burning of the town is the ultimate political act, while the murder of Shatov is more about settling personal scores.
